This page is about adding 3 numbers together .

Warm up Activity: Display three sets of objects on the table (pasta shells/ small toys/ colours etc) Ask your child to count how many there are altogether . Provide lots of practice with three number sums using concrete materials. Arrange them in lots of different sets ie 2+3+2 /1+2+5/ 4+3+3 etc

Orally ask your child a number story ex. Emily has 3 apples, Darragh has 4 apples and Sadhbh has 2 apples....How many altogether? If this is difficult for your child, stick with two people number questions.

Practice adding 3 numbers orally but using the number line. Jim has 2 apples, John has 4 apples, Joe has 1 apple....ask your child to find out the answer by using the number line . (A large homemade number line would be useful.) Encourage them to start at zero, take 2 jumps for Jim, 4 more jumps for John and 1 more jump for Joe. Where do you land? (answer)

Make the number stories relevant to the child. Jack has 3 blue teddies, 4 green teddies and 2 orange teddies, how many has he altogether? Using the format above figure out the answer using the number line. Do plenty practice of oral sums.

It is good practice to get your child accustomed to using the number line as they will progress to a 100 square next year.

S.E.S.E. Growing and changing: Warm up discussion: Look at clothes your child no longer wears, and something

they no longer use, e.g. dribbler, rattler. Discuss why they no longer use these. Develop appropriate language — fits/doesn’t fit, too big/small, grown out of/not big enough.

Discuss how the children feel about growing up. What is good about being bigger? Would they like to be babies again? Why? Why not? What do they like doing with babies or watching babies do?

Discuss how the children themselves have changed since they were babies. What changes do they think will happen to them between now and when they are adults?

Discuss memories — Christmas, birthdays, holidays, first day at school, first visit to dentist etc.

When children look carefully at photos of themselves when they were younger, ask them to consider how they have changed and how, in some ways, they have stayed the same.

Draw pictures of what has stayed the same in child’s life and what has changed since they were babies

Look at parents/ guardian’s evidence of his/her past and share with the children, e.g. photo, clothes, toys etc.

This page is about measures: weight. The children need lots of concrete experience with the mass of

a variety of objects. The range of objects should include small/large heavy objects ex: stones and books, and small/large light objects ex: a pencil, empty boxes, a large sponge and plastic bottles.

Ask the children to guess which objects are heavy/ light. Encourage your child to predict before testing. Example questions: (A balance or scales is useful for checking answers) (Use

Go on a Nature Walk: Point to objects along the way and ask children if they are living or non-living. How do they know? On return home , let children cut pictures of living and non-living things from magazines and sort them into sets.

How many different types of animals can children spot on their walk?

What is the biggest/smallest? Using a bug catcher (jar), investigate the characteristics of

some minibeasts. Look out for animal homes — e.g. nests, under stones and

leaves for minibeasts. Go on a minibeast hunt. Have children predict where they might find minibeasts — on

leaves/flowers, in grass, under/on trees, near/on a wall etc. Check these out.

Examine and identify the minibeasts. Note how they move. Is there any evidence about what they eat? Go on a spider hunt. Find a dew-covered web. Can they find

the spider? Are there any insects trapped in the web? Using a bug catcher(Jar), let the children examine the spider

and note its physical characteristics. Encourage children to always return creatures safely to their

natural environment. Investigate a tree using the senses........Have children examine

the bark and leaves using magnifying glasses. Take bark rubbings. Collect leaves and seeds from different

trees. Have children sort them into sets according to shape, colour,

Here is an example of a butter fly made from an empty toilet paper roll, to add to your garden.

You may have gone on the garden walkabout on Thursday and had a look for some bugs. Why not make a collection of bugs:

Alternatively if you can not access art materials suggested above, design a real garden!! Go on a garden walk and collect real materials: real grass, twigs, flowers, leaves etc When you have gathered all your items, stick them onto paper/card and design a nice picture.
