Abstract

The rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) (Pyralidae: Lepidoptera), has recently emerged as an important insect pest of rice in many Asian countries. Because of the economic importance of the insect and the difficulty of controlling it with insecticides, incorporation of natural resistance to C. medinalis is essential. Literature documenting the status of research on varietal resistance and the current strategy in germplasm evaluation is reviewed. Rice varieties and wild rices resistant to C. medinalis are listed. The mechanisms and causes of resistance in rice varieties and wild rices are also reviewed and discussed. A strategy for breeding rice varieties resistant to C. medinalis is suggested.
