familiar so that the public wants to buy or use them. Advertising campaigns are created y companies through their marketing departments can influence what we consume. They are aimed at a target audience: the group of people who may be most interested in the message. This message often includes a slogan, which is a simple memorable statement that summarizes the product or service. These meaningful and inspirational messages make us buy things that we don’t really need. Apart from repetition, exaggeration association, promotions and slogans, advertising campaigns also use techniques like wordplays, a combination of words that are easily remembered and provocation, a controversial image or text that catches the eye of the consumer.

Think of some TV adverts you have seen. What advertising techniques do they use? Do they persuade you to buy their products? ______________________________________________________________________________

CONSUMPTIONPeople use a variety of products and services: they buy clothes, they go shopping for food, they go to the films at the cinema and they pay for holidays in the summer. But sometimes people consume more products and services than they really need,

We often consume too many products and services, while other people around the world haven’t got clean water, medicines or enough food to survive.

We need to practice responsible consumption by controlling our use of products and services. Before you buy a product, look at its characteristics, assess your real needs, compare different products and don’t let advertising influence your decision. We also need to save energy and limited resources like water.Responsible consumption is changing your buying habits to meet your real needs and making choices that favour the environment and social equality.

Make a list of products and services you use every day. Which ones are really basic needs? Are you a responsible consumer? Make a list of the thing that make you a responsible consumer and the thing you could do to improve.

Things I do Things I’m going to improve
