Explain whether you like the story or not giving examples from the text to explain your feelings. 2. Ask 3 questions to an adult or sibling listening to you read to check they are listening carefully. Make sure you know the answers too! 3. Describe a character using 3 words to a sibling or adult. Can they use your clues to guess the character? Reading comprehension - This week’s reading comprehension is a SATs style comprehension focusing on inference questions. The comprehension demonstrates the level of stamina for reading children are expected to achieve by the end of Year 2. If your child is reading purple book bands or above, allow them to have a go at reading and answering the questions of their own before going through it with them again and looking at the answers. If your child is not yet reading at a purple level, read the story with them or to them if needed and encourage them to answer the questions. Don’t forget to also read your own books for pleasure throughout the day. I know many of you enjoy reading or listening to a book at bedtime. Spellings – homophones and near homophones (2 weeks’ spellings) The differences between near homophones are usually slight, which causes a lot of problems for developing spellers. Take a look at the examples of near homophones below and think about how they are pronounced and their differences in meaning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xMHKeeGHkU&feature=emb_logo

Spellings – homophones and near homophones (2 weeks’ spellings)

The differences between near homophones are usually slight, which causes a lot of problems for developing spellers. Take a look at the examples of near homophones below and think about how they are pronounced and their differences in meaning.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xMHKeeGHkU&feature=emb_logo

Learn these by writing sentences to show an understanding of the meaning of each spelling. You could also play games by writing the words on flash cards for your child to hold up the correct spelling for each word when given a sentence. Continue to learn, practise and test Year 1 and 2 common exception words. Another copy of these words are attached below.

Writing Tasks – Thank you to all of you who sent in your mystery character descriptions. We really enjoyed using your clues to try and guess who you were describing. We really loved seeing that you are now beginning to confidently use some or all of the writing techniques you practised the week before.

- Vary the words your sentences start with- Handwriting – letters the correct size in relation to one another- Expanded noun phrases- Adverbs- Similes- Possessive apostrophes- Commas in a list- A range of conjunctions

This week’s main focus is on speaking and listening as the children build up their knowledge of Windsor Castle to becoming television presenters.

Monday 15th June – Handwriting Year 2 expectations for handwritingExceeding – To meet working towards and expected expectations and use the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters correctly. Expected – To meet working towards expectations and form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters. Children at the expected level are expected to join most of the time.Working towards –To form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place and form lower-case letters of the correct size relative to one another in some of their writing.

Please continue to practise handwriting today. If you found the handwriting sheets helpful they are attached below. For children who are working at the exceeding level, you may prefer to write your own words or sentences. These could be to practise some of the writing techniques we were using last week (listed above).

The main expectation that Year 2 children can find the most challenging is ensuring all letters are the correct size in relation to one another. If you feel your child needs additional handwriting practise, please print off multiple copies and practise little and often.

Wednesday 17th June – Write a script

On Friday, your task will be to become a TV presenter. You will need to share your information about Windsor Castle clearly and enthusiastically. I have included a link to TV presenter training. Look at how the presenter moves his body. Listen to how to presenter uses his voice. Listen to his tips on to be a successful TV presenter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAdZP2I5SPc

Using some of the information you gathered yesterday, write a script for what you would like to say and share about Windsor Castle. Remember a presenter’s job is to engage their listeners so try to choose your facts for your audience. Will you be a children’s TV presenter who will include cool, exciting, maybe gruesome facts to excite their audience. Or will you present to adults with more serious, factual information?

Thursday 18th June – Practise speaking

Today is a chance to check you are happy with your script and to practise. Try to learn most of the things you are going to say so you are not reading all your information off your script. Practise using your voice and actions to engage your audience. You might like to think about any props that you could find or make to use.

Friday 19th June – Speaking

Today is the day, you are now a TV presenter. If you are able to, use a device to record yourself presenting your information about Windsor castle.

Remember to speak clearly, with enthusiasm and have fun. You may even like to dress up in clothes that reflect your presentation.

Science

Scientific skills (SS) – Looking at changing states between liquid and ice, this ‘Intriguing Ice’ investigation focuses on the scientific skills of predicting, comparing results and giving reasons.

You will need

- 5 cups- Water- Kettle- Lemonade- Food dye- Salt

To complete this investigation, think about water and how it freezes. Put 5 different liquids (1. plain water, 2. pre-boiled water, 3. clear salt water, 4. Lemonade or other fizzy pop 5. water with food dye added) into each cup.

SS Prediction - Think about what will happen to each liquid when it freezes. Discuss or write your predictions thinking about whether you think all the liquids will freeze the same or differently. Try to explain your answer.

Put all of the cups (with the liquids inside) into the freezer for 24 hours. It may help to label your cups so you can remember which liquid is in each. Once frozen, remove the cups from the freezer and with help from an adult remove the ice by pouring hot water over the outside of the cup.

SS Comparing – Look at each block of ice. Were your predictions right? Are they all the same? Are they different? Discuss or write to describe the look of each block of ice and how they are different to one another.

SS Giving reasons – Once you have thought about how the blocks of ice are different, think about why this might be. How and why does the liquid in each cup affect what it’s frozen state will look like? Discuss and/or write your reasoning.

This investigation can be found at the following URL.

https://www.stem.org.uk/rx32h8 A video clip is included to watch after the investigation to explain the changes in state.
