WHAT WE DO:

We work with, support those who are suffering from Colon Cancer

Because of their conditions, they were subjected to A Colostomy or bowl diversion.

As shown in the pictures, “A colostomy is a surgical procedure that brings one end of the large intestine out through the abdominal wall. During this procedure, one end of the colon is diverted through an incision in the abdominal wall to create a stoma. A stoma is the opening in the skin where a bag for collecting feces is attached. People with temporary or long- term colostomies have pouches attached to their sides where feces collect and can be easily disposed of.

Colostomies aren’t always permanent, especially in children

with birth defects.

A colostomy can be the result of one of several procedures to correct problems with the lower digestive tract. Other “ostomies” include ileostomy and urostomy. An ileostomy is a diversion of the bottom of the small intestine. A urostomy is a diversion of the tubes that carry urine out of the bladder. A colostomy may also be referred to as bowel diversion therapy”.

Page 6:  · Web viewAs shown in the pictures, “A colostomy is a surgical procedure that brings one end of the large intestine out through the abdominal wall. During this procedure, one

According to the Hopkins medicine health news, “During a colostomy, surgeons divert one end of the large intestine into a visible opening known as a stoma on the patient’s abdomen. Small pouch or colostomy bag is then placed over the stoma to collect waste products that wouldnormally pass through a person’s rectum and anus”, (www.hopkinsmedine.org>healthnews)

The situation explained above is not only inconveniencing but it is also very expensive as the bag has to be changed from time to time. Failure to do so would mean that the person’s body odor changes. For an ordinary person with NO stable income, feeding and meeting other basic needs alone is very difficult; this is not only a nightmare but more of a death sentence. Therefore, these people lives in fear and shame of their conditions. Those who had employments can no longer keep the job, students and school going pupils cannot continue with school with fear of being stigmatized by their colleagues.

Furthermore, the community of people living Uganda lacks sufficient knowledge about the problem.

In Uganda, There is no government health program targeting to sensitize the people about these conditions. The people suffering from these conditions suffer and or die in silence. If they incidentally get colostomy and a stoma created, they have to live their entire lives in isolation, fear and shame because of the poor hygienic conditions they are in.

This happens because none of them can afford to buy colostomy bags that are always very rare to get. The pictures in this document explain the dire conditions these people are living. Because they are still alive, they must try and solve the problem, e.g. using polythene bags commonly known as “Kaveras” and clothes instead of colostomy bags. These materials are not only unhealthy, but can only help for some few minutes and must be changed

The children’s condition can still correct through and operation, the

only challenge is finance. Some these families can hardly afford one

meal a day not to talk of buying a colostomy bag which cost 172,

500 shillings per box per month and operation that cost between

five to ten million shillings

Unlike in children surgical procedure to correct this condition through and operation in adults is more complicated and risky and can cost more. As you already know, some these families can hardly afford one meal a day not to talk of buying a colostomy bag which cost

172, 500 shillings per box per month and operation that cost between five to ten million shillings. They can’t afford it. Their only hope is to have access to colostomy bags available

to them at all times so that their daily activities are not disrupted because their body suddenly starts smelling bad.

OUR CHALLENGES

Due to our limited resources, we are unable to provide enough and timely support to these

patients and families and some are without colostomy bags, as explained above, they

cannot continue with their regular activities hence addition to their sufferings. This is

because of the overwhelming number and our dependency on the support provided by well-

wishers.

In the communities, most people are not aware of these conditions, including some health

that we expect them to know. As a result the people facing these challenges are often

stigmatized, hated and called all sorts of names, This only frustrate them but discouraged

those who have same condition from out to seek for help. This is the reason why we need

more community sanitations. The challenge here is we don’t the resources.

There are rising needs towards the support of colostomy catheater patients due to high rate

of poverty and increased vulnerability of Communities in this post conflict region of

Northern Uganda. Many parents are unable to provide proper support for their health and

their family due to extreme poverty.

Most community members have little knowledge about this sickness especially in children

and rights and responsibilities of children and women, so there are not enough messages

reaching them.

Community members still find it hard to report some cases because of cultural beliefs and

norms, and also some of the survivors still find it hard to report come out in the open for

fear of community reactions e.g. Stigma and other things.
