Remote Learning Week 2

Division 4 – Mrs. Stainton

Hello families! Welcome back to remote learning, week 2.

Steps for this week:

1) Decide how much school work is do-able for your family at this moment. Go slow, there is no need to push yourself into doing more than you can handle. You can always add in more as you become more comfortable. Here are my daily recommendations to strive for:

· Read for a minimum of 30 minutes.

· Write about something that interests you.

· Get moving for a minimum of 30 minutes.

· Do activities on the choice board chart. Try and do at least one per day.

2) Decide what kind of routine/schedule you are comfortable with. Did your routine work or not last week? Did you feel productive? What changes can you make? Would you like more one-on-one time to chat with me? Please let me know!

3) Use the suggested activities on the charts. The ideas for reading, writing, and passion projects have all stayed the same. I have changed the choice board and the exercise board. Use them however you feel works for you!

As mentioned last week, if all you want to do is reading and exercise, That is great! Do what works for you. Alternatively, you may want even more than I have made up here. Please just ask! Keep in mind that as we get into the swing of things online I may add in more subjects or activities. You didn’t sign up to be a home school teacher and I am just learning how to teach remotely, we will take this one step at a time! There are a TON of apps and websites. It can get very overwhelming to sift through them if you don’t know what you are looking for. Let me know what you need and I will do that for you.

4) Help your child view my messages via Youtube. I will email the link when I make a post. Again, this is optional and meant to encourage connection!

5) Help your child check into our weekly class Zoom meeting (date tbd). Last week’s Zoom chat was fun! We worked out some technical kinks and I think that this week will be even better. I would like to host a couple of shorter one-on-one Zoom sessions. I will send you the links and times for those this week.

6) Keep a list of questions/concerns and either email me, let your child phone me, or wait until I send you the link to your child’s one on one meeting with me (this can be Zoom or a phone call).

Write a letter to the newspaper.

Observe an insect or animal outside and write down what you notice.

Write about something you dislike.

Turn the alphabet into new symbols and then write something with the symbols.

Get Moving! At least 30 minutes a day!

Learn a new dance.

Go for a walk around the neighbourhood.

Follow a workout video for yoga.

Do hopscotch outside. How long can you make the hopscotch?

Rollerblade/scooter/skateboard.

Bike around the neighbourhood.

Go for a hike with your family.

Don’t let the balloon/hacky sack

touch the ground.

Toss a ball at a target (or into a box) and see how far you can step away.

Freeze dance. When the music stops you freeze.

Have a “snowball” fight with socks.

Have an egg spoon race or just see how far you can go. Fun for Easter!

Create an obstacle course.

Play Simon Says.

Practice skills with a basketball or soccer ball.

Practice skills with a hockey stick.

How many of these can you do? Highlight or cross off when you finish one.

Measure and graph the daily temperature at the same time each day.

Start making Easter art! Easter is coming up this month. Ask an adult if you can hard boil an egg to decorate.

Measure the perimeter and area of your bedroom. What about the perimeter of your house?

Paint rocks or hang signs in your window with encouraging words.

Perform an act of kindness. Draw a picture, write, or tell someone how you feel.

Write a new ending for a book or movie.

Do a page in your Jump Math book. Watch a Khan Academy video before you do it!

Help an adult or make your family dinner. How would you halve, double, or triple the recipe? Create a menu for your family dinner.

Design a poster about 3 positive character traits you have learned this year.

Watch a documentary. Write six facts that you learned. Turn the facts you learned into a newspaper article or a news clip.

Use the app “Duolingo” to start learning a new language.

Look around the house and find old objects. Answer the following questions. What do you SEE? What does this item make you THINK about? What do you WONDER about this item? What do you THINK this item may be used for? How has this object changed over time?

Use the cards Ace to 10 and play war, but see who can add, subtract or multiply the fastest.

Look around your house and see what you can use to write your name in an artistic way. You could design on paper, use crafts, wood, or even just things you find inside or outside.

Practice Mindfulness 5-4-3-2-1

Look around your room to find:

5 things you can see

4 things you can touch

3 things you can hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

This can provide you a mental reset to manage tough times.
