From the PastorAs I listened to the news broadcast of the 17-year-old boy who shot and killed eight students and two teachers at Santa Fe High School in Texas last Friday, it reminded me about how we human beings can be so brutal

and vicious. After such an event, the media typically discusses the attacker’s family, gun control, and improved protection for schools in the future. These are important issues – but they do not address the major causes of violence. Although a horrible event like this takes center stage in the world headlines, it is only a single drop in a huge bucket that is filled daily with horrific acts that include human trafficking, bullying in schools, and domestic and gang violence, to name just a few.

Are we becoming complacent and accepting of senseless and unnecessary violence as a way of life? Are we blaming parents, insufficient law enforcement, inadequate background checks, and violence in movies and video games – while doing nothing but crossing our fingers and hoping that it will not happen in our town? Jesus fully expects us to respond to violence. He says: God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God (Matthew 5:9).

As Christians, we need to pray for – and support – our professional peacemakers who dedicate their lives to counselling, criminal justice, education, law enforcement, legislation, mental health, the military, and social work. Although we will never be able to completely get rid of violence, we can reduce it by working together for safer communities. Jesus is not calling us to bury our heads in the sand and pretend that there will be no more violence. Jesus calls us to reach out to as many people as we can, especially those who are ignored and ridiculed by others. We are called to build relationships with those who have been hurt by others before they turn around and retaliate. In our daily living, Jesus calls us to be filled with God’s love; to remain calm in all situations; to treat everyone as we want to be treated; and to reduce the stresses and tensions that fill our society on all levels. If you ever hear a person talking about harming themselves or other people, take them seriously and report it to a law enforcement or mental health professional. The next person in our community who may act out with violence could live right next door. May God help us to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. May God give us the wisdom to identify people who are potential victims; the courage to identify potential attackers; and the mercy and compassion to reach out and show them God’s love through our words and our actions.

absence from her position on the Methodist Church staff to care for him full-time.Alex Happ, grandson of Carol Carlson is serving in the U.S. Marines. We keep Alex in

prayer as his continuous, non-stop migraine headaches have returned.Chuck Hay is recovering from surgery to remove the broken screws and shifted plates

in his leg. He is restricted from putting weight on his leg for three months until the bones heal. Nancy Hay is caregiver for Chuck and her father, Lou Wahls.

Paul Hellyer, nephew of Kim Brucker is battling addiction. Denise Horton, a family friend of Molly Schroader is fighting cancer.Terry Hutchcraft is battling kidney disease.Dale Jones is a resident of Heritage Healthcare with dementia. Gary Keim is undergoing physical therapy to regain strength in his arms and legs.Ada Kennedy is a resident of Gibson Area Hospital Annex.Nancy List is a resident of the Gibson Area Hospital Annex.Jerry Mieczkowski, son-in-law of Bette Mohart, gives thanks that his head and neck

cancer is in remission.Pastor Dennis Norton of First Baptist Church is fighting a rare lung disease. He is

raising four young children with his wife, Linda.Jeff Randecker, brother of Kim Brucker, suffers from depression.Ryan Reid, grandson of Frank & Margaret Stocker, is serving in the U.S. Air Force at

The New Church Directories are finally here! They can be picked up from the table outside the door to the Sanctuary. There is already one correction – new address for Darrell and Barbara Stroh is 520 N. Guthrie St., Gibson City, Illinois 60936 – their cell phone number is 217-369-2009. If you find other corrections that need to be made please let Gerry know.

Little Achievers Academy will be hosting two weeks of Community Summer Camp. The first week will be June 11 - 15, and the second week will be July 9 - 13. These camps are for 3 to 5-year-olds and will be held in the mornings. If you are interested, please contact Kari DeFries at (217) 649-4003.

Cleaning House? Our Annual Garage Sale is scheduled for August 23, 24 and 25th in Parish Hall. Start saving those priceless treasurers for the sale!

Coffee and Conversation will be taking a break for the summer. Our meetings will resume in September on the third Tuesday morning of every month from 9:00 – 10:00 in Parish Hall.

You are invited to join St. John’s WELCA for Bible Study and fellowship. In June we will meet on June 14th at 2:00 pm with Carol Bielfeldt leading the Bible Study. We will meet at the home of Rona Eyer. In July we will meet on July 24th at 2:00 pm at the home of Gerry Gallagher. Gerry will be the Bible Study Leader and hostess.

Servants United Update . . . . . .

Status of Call Process: Community Lutheran Church in Cornell and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Dwight are scheduled to vote on their pastoral candidate for Servants United Parish on Sunday, June 3rd.

On Sunday, May 6th, all six churches of our Parish held worship together at Trinity Lutheran, Chenoa. 110 members of Servants United worshiped together – 11 of those were from our own congregation. Even though it rained and made us worship inside the church instead of in the park it was a fun worship service. The Worship Service was followed by a picnic dinner served by Trinity. The food and fellowship were wonderful.

Did you know? – you can attend any of the six churches and still have your offering go to your home church. If you would like to attend an early service (8:30 am) it is easy to do by coming to the early worship service and placing your home church offering envelope in the offering plate. The Church will make sure that your offering gets back to your home church.

Our next joint Worship Service will be held here at American Lutheran on Sunday, October 21st, at 10:30 am. There will be a lunch following hosted by American Lutheran. If you have not been able to attend one of the joint services this will be a great time to do so.

Members Present: Ryan Tompkins, Mike Eyer, Barbara Bielfeldt, Darcy Thompson, Lori Buhs, Gary Lutterbie, Jim Spangler, Pastor Jim DavisExcused: Curt MillerCall to order: President Ryan Tompkins called the meeting to order at 6:32 PMPrayer and Devotions: Pastor Davis led devotions by reciting “A Prayer for When Life Gets You Down” by Carrie Lowrance.Reports: Secretary: The 03/14/2018 Council minutes were available for council members’ approval. Treasurer: Darcy reported a 03/14/2018 checkbook balance of $2,252.85. The 03/31/2018 detail Financial Report is posted on the bulletin board on the west wall of the Parish Hall. She reported money is missing from the Key fund. She deposited the money and will issue a check for the $5 when keys are returned. Servants United will twice a year evaluate their finances and determine if a refund can be made to the churches. American Lutheran received a refund of $6,850. She signed up with AGERA for electricity which will reduce our rate from 11.5 cents to 4.95 cents per kilowatts. She also did it for the parsonage. Their representative is Lowell Mest.Financial Secretary: Nothing new to report at this time.Deacon: Curt Miller is changing the church sign. Rodney Schrack will help when needed.Parish Education: Julie DeFries will continue to lead the Foundation of Faith classes. They plan on doing chalk drawings outside.Trustee: Gary Lutterbie reported he repaired the plugged sink sprayers and breakers.

Vice President: Mike Eyer reported on the Servant’s United Parish call committee. Gene Mortensen of Dwight is chairman of the committee. They received a candidate and Pastor Ed and Pastor Jim have interviewed and approved. The candidate was interviewed on Monday, 4/16 by the call committee. There will be another call committee meeting on Monday, 4/23/2018.

President: Nothing new to report.

Team Reports:Christian Fellowship: American Lutheran Church’s 75th anniversary celebration is being chaired by Kevin Buhs. An outdoor festival is being planned with music and food for the community in August.

Community Resource: We will be assisting with the Food Pantry distributions on Saturday, 7/28/2018 and 12/08/2018. Help will be needed for both Friday and Saturday.

A discussion was held on our participation with the Poured Out Churches event. Cynthia Davis will be filling in for Barb Horsch who is taking a leave of absence from chairing the Poured Out Churches event.Prayer Team: Continues to meet twice a month

Stewardship: Pastor Jim reported he may have a couple of people interested in chairing the Stewardship committee.

Pastor’s Report: Pastor Jim provided a monthly written report of his and Pastor Ed’s activities for Servants United. These are posted on the bulletin board with other Servants United information.Pastor Jim will be attending the Nebraska Men in Mission Retreat on Thursday, 4/19/2018 thru Thursday, 4/26/2018. He will be serving as a leader and will also receive training to plan the Illinois event in October.On 4/29/2018, we will have a joint service with Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 3:00 PM. Bishop Roth will be participating along with a representative from the Catholic diocese.

Approval of Reports: Darcy Thompson moved to approve all reports as read. Lori Buhs seconded. Motion passed.

Servants United Parish: Darcy will place Servants United Parish reports on the bulletin board.

Old Business: Jim Spangler reported he reviewed the specs to change the lighting to LED with a representative of Ameren. Gary Lutterbie says he also has someone who would like to try some lights in the quilt room to see how they do in there.Pastor reported Assistant Bishop Maureen Stein would like job descriptions done for all positions within our church. We have a job description for the janitor but need one for secretary and organist. Ryan Tompkins will ask Misti Tompkins for her help with this.The council and spouses and past president Lisa Gregerson and David will meet for dinner at Railside on 5/9/2018 6:00 PM.

New Business: Darcy reported she has someone cleaning the kitchen and someone else doing the sanctuary. She would like a spring and fall cleanup day be scheduled.Darcy suggested a church wish list be compiled and posted. Suggestions were a new office computer will be needed in the future. The parking lot needs to be resurfaced and the parish hall needs new carpeting. Darcy will talk to Jeremy Meiners about his recommendations for a computer.Next Meeting: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 6:30 PM with Darcy Thompson doing devotions.Adjourn: Jim Spangler moved to adjourn. Community Outreach WeekendYou are invited to celebrate our community and our commitment to Christian service by participating in this year’s Outreach event.

Please consider keeping some time free the weekend of August 25th and 26th to come together to help members of our congregation and Gibson City.

Saturday (August 25th) there will be opportunities to work at the Food Pantry; help with yards, fences, ramps, gutters, install safety features inside and outside homes; bag and

carry out groceries; wash car windows; and work on buildings that we rely on within our community.

Sunday (August 26th) we will meet for worship at our regular time of 10:30 inside the American Lutheran Church building. Following our service, you are invited to join the many service groups and churches from our community at the North Park Pavilion for a time of lunch and fellowship. We will have smoked loin of pork, baked beans, salads, chips, desserts and beverages. Everything is being provided so all you need to do is bring you and your friends for the fun! Our congregation is responsible for the beverages this year, so please let me know if you would like to help with that.

Once we have finished eating, we will be going out to join others with card making; praying for our schools, ambulance crews, police, fire fighters; singing at Heritage, the Annex and the Villas of Holly Brook; bagging and assisting people with their groceries; washing vehicle windows; collecting items from homes for our Household/Paper products drive; gathering for prayer; distributing cookies; tying quilts; working at various service buildings within the community and a few other projects. There will be something for everyone to help with no matter your age or physical abilities.

Please contact me if you have yard work or projects around your home that you would like assistance with. Do you need help sorting or cleaning out your garage, closet, kitchen because of downsizing; need safety grab bars installed in your tub or shower area; need help with landscaping or home repairs; a room painted; whatever it is…. We would love to help!

Watch for sign-up sheets in the church and further announcements in the weekly bulletin. You may also see information in the local papers and hear about it on WGCY!

We are so excited to partner with the local community service organizations and other churches for this incredible weekend dedicated to making our community safer; help one another and make some new friends!
