NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT Jim Schwabero

419-236-2074

Happy summer to all our devoted retired educators. It has been a very busy summer for us. We are finally moved; new address: 1755 Shawnee Rd. #504 Lima, Ohio 45805. Our membership as of last report was 198, we are a growing and powerful organization. We are in need of officers for our group. Positions available are vice president and treasurer; Alice is eligible to serve another term, but Mary is term limited and we must elect a new treasurer. Remember to keep track of your volunteer hours. I'm sure we miss a lot of hours. We will have forms available at the meeting so bring your hours with you. The board of directors has proposed two amendments to our constitution1. Add to Article II Purpose Section D [including health insurance and legislative concerns.2. Add to Article VI Finance Section 2 DuesAdd Part E The Allen County Retired Teachers Association requires an annual dual membership dues with the Ohio Retired Teachers Association for all new memberships beginning on/or after January 1, 2016 In accordance with our constitution these amendments will be read at the August meeting and will be voted on atthe October meeting. They must receive a 2/3 vote to be adopted.

NEW ORTA MEMBERSHIP PLAN

To encourage a trend toward dual memberships, beginning with the January 1, 2016 association fiscal year, ORTA will provide a rebate of 10% for the regular annually paid ORTA dues to any local association upon prior receipt to ORTA of a verifying citation of a dual membership structure for all new members in their local association bylaws.

This membership plan will rebate $3 for every $30 dues paid to ORTA for those county associations that adopt a dual membership structure effective on January 1, 2016. The Allen County Retired Teachers Association Board of Directors has approved the presenting of this dual membership option to our membership at our August 6th meeting at Westside United Methodist Church. This plan is designed to benefit the ACRTA treasury while also growing the membership of ORTA. We all stand to benefit from this plan. Attend the ACRTA August meeting to hear the story, and voice your thoughts. Bruce Hodges

LEGISLATIVE COMMENTS Bruce Hodges

ACRTA Legislative Chairperson

There are two serious threats from the Congress in Washington D. C. to our Defined Benefit retirement plan that sustains retirement payments for the rest of our lives. (1) There is a continued effort to push Ohio into mandatory Social Security and (2) the well-funded Arnold Foundation out of Texas seems determined to put all public retirement systems into a defined contribution (DC) system that will make retirement payments only until your retirement account is depleted. Then you must support yourself no matter what your age is.

In the Ohio State Legislature consideration has been given to allow “high performing schools” to hire non licensed employees to teach up to 40 hours per week on a permit issued through the State Board of Education. Non licensed teachers will not be required to contribute to our STRS retirement plan. This can significantly erode the financial base of active teachers who pay into STRS. This will jeopardize the long range financial stability of STRS.

There was a move in the Ohio Senate by the National Heritage Academies to EXEMPT charter school employees from being required to paying into STRS. This would open the door for more and more educators to be assigned to Social Security.

This is another attempt to erode the financial stability of STRS.

We have already begun the 2016 election campaigns for politicians at all levels of government. Now is the time to listen to what campaigns and candidates are promoting. Do your homework and fact check the positions taken by candidates and the issues presented by political parties. Political games are going to be played with our retirement system and our profession and the players are not required to always tell you the truth about their positions. You must do your homework and discover the truth yourself. This is another reason we need the voice of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association to be strong.

Take a Look at Your Family Medical Tree

There is a renewed interest in many to research their family tree. Genealogy, access to the internet, and more free time allow many retirees to trace their family tree. Yes, even our family discovered the name of the boat that my grandfather came to North America from Holland many years ago. How many of you know the medical history of your grandparents, aunts, uncles, or others in previous generations. In most families know very little about the health information, yet this medical history would be very valuable to your family physician.

As a patient, it would be helpful to collect accurate information for the most recent 3 generations:

1.       Diseases and illness of siblings, parents, and grandparents.2.       Age and outcome of the diagnosis3.       Age and cause of death.4.       Accurate details about the illness (diabetes, color blind, high blood pressure, etc.)5.       Whether multiple family members have the same conditions.

Both the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society have identified over 50 hereditary that are significant.

Most doctors do not want patients to perform amateur diagnosis, yet encourage the medical information regarding other family members to assist the medical community in earlier screenings or tests to identify issues and provide a head start with treatments.

Talk to your parents, children, and grandchildren about family health history. Write this information down and file it with your legal papers, genealogy records, and other files that you have collected. Just a few short hours of your time may make a significant improvement of your future family members
