Logos is all about logic and common sense. It is data driven and factual. If the ad is using LOGOS, you are probably looking at an ad that could be described using the following key terms: Facts - a thing that is known or proved to be true

Scientific sounding statements- meant to sound educated and factualSpecific evidence - Evidence that serves to either support or counter a scientific theory or hypothesis.Statistical evidence - a set or collection of numbers that prove a theory or story to be true.Data driven - determined by or dependent on the collection or analysis of data(Key terms list continued)

Ethos is about morals- using ethos means implying that people who have shared morals or values should do something to prove they are really true to such values. “Good” Americans do_____ (blank) is one example. If the ad is using ETHOS, you are probably looking at an ad that could be described using the following key terms: Credibility - the quality of being trusted and believed inPatriotism - the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one's countryEthics - a system of moral principlesMorals - a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable to do.Credible - able to be believed; convincingRespected - deeply admired or esteemed

Pathos makes the audience feel something, be it worried, stressed, on-alert, disgusted, etc. If the ad is using PATHOS, you are probably looking at an ad that could be described using the following key terms: Emotion-driven - Making decisions based off of your emotions instead of your brainEmotional appeal - a persuasion method used to create emotional feedback or response from the target audience.Shocking - causing indignation or disgust; offensiveStartling - very surprising, astonishing, or remarkableDisturbing - causing anxiety; worrying

Sample Paragraph (yours should look relatively like this in structure, content, and length): The Ministry of Health published an advertisement that shows a uniformed man sneezing on another man’s plate

of food, with the caption “Cover coughs, cover sneezes” written in bold above it. This ad uses the rhetorical appeals of pathos and logos because it is both shocking and scientifically-based. The ad was probably made during a pandemic or flu outbreak to educate people on how to not spread disease, and the ad is probably especially targeted towards those in the military who are always in close quarters because the people being shown are in military uniform. After seeing this ad the makers of it probably hope people will think twice before openly sneezing or coughing on others. The main appeal being used is pathos, because the visual of a stream of spit and germs coming out of the man’s mouth is startling and disturbing to the viewer. There is also a secondary appeal of logos being used because the caption says, “Never give a germ a break” (Ministry of Health) and that is making a scientifically based statement. This ad is effective because it would make the viewer want to do anything they could in their power to not spread infection or germs and to avoid being glared at like the surrounding men in the picture are glaring at the sneezing man. The dramatic look of disgust on the faces of the surrounding soldiers in the ad would mirror how the viewer of the ad probably feels, and that makes it successful in producing the ad maker’s desired or intended effect or result of preventing this from happening in the future.
