The gospel passage for this weekend recounts the baptism of Jesus Christ by his cousin John as told by St Mark. The Baptist proclaimed that he was simply the forerunner to someone much more important than himself and for whom even John was too insignificant to carry out the duties of a servant. And yet this important person was baptised by John in the Jordan and immediately received the Holy Spirit to carry out the duties for which he came to earth. The Father also spoke from heaven and proclaimed Jesus to be his Son, on whom his favour rests.

The tearing open of the heavens for this Trinitarian moment suggests that the barrier between heaven and earth was now removed so that direct communication could take place between God and his people. The Lord’s work of preaching the Good News of salvation began from this moment and would culminate with his death about three years later.

At his baptism, the Lord declared Jesus to be his Son. At our baptism we too became sons and daughters of God in a very particular and special way and the Father’s favour rests on us too, even if a heavenly declaration wasn’t heard and the heavens weren’t torn open in spectacular fashion. As baptised people, therefore, we too should work at all times for the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ which we can do in a multitude of ways, beginning with the practice of the faith and allowing the faith to guide all the moments and key decisions of our life. That great work is aided by the Holy Spirit whom we have all received and who will give us strength if we place our trust in God.

Remaining Vigilant

While Covid-19 is a significant threat, we strongly recommend and ask all those visiting our church to adhere to the following:

· Wear a face mask at all times while in the building no matter how many others are there.

· Wear a face mask when in the confessional.

· Sanitise your hands when entering the building.

· Keep a safe distance from others when seated and avoid crowding, particularly when lighting candles and visiting the Crib.

· Follow the instructions of our staff in the church and shop.

People may bring a clean bottle of tap water to church and it can be blessed by a priest, or they can buy a bottle in the Church Shop and we will fill it for them (there is no charge for the holy water).

Thank You

The Carmelite Community at Whitefriar Street is grateful to all those who have supported us over the last several months and who sent in Christmas and New Year’s wishes by card and email. Our sincere thanks to all those who made donations at Christmas to help maintain the church.

That we ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of GOD, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed. That we should not wonder if, in the beginning, we often failed in our endeavours, but that at last we should gain a habit, which will naturally produce its acts in us, without our care, and to our exceeding great delight.

Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection,

Carmelite Friar

A Saint or two this week…

St Ita, Virgin

Ita was born about the year 470 near Faithlegg, outside Waterford city, to noble Christian parents: Kennfoelad, a Déise Chieftain, and Necta, his princess wife. From her baptism Ita was filled with the Holy Spirit and everyone marvelled at her childhood purity and behaviour, and her abstinence on fasting days. She is said to have been prudent, very generous, kind and gentle as well as chaste in her language. Her father wished to marry her to a nobleman but she refused, preferring to consecrate herself completely to Christ. Her father refused her wish, so she went at once to an aged priest she had known from childhood and publicly made her vows which she had already formed in her heart. She left her father’s house and the pleasant places round it and set out with some companions for the Ua Conaill territory in the West of Munster, present-day Co. Limerick. Ita died about the year 570. Her grave, frequently decorated with flowers, is in the ruins of Cill Ide, a Romanesque church at Killeedy where her monastery once stood.
