Question 7: Case study
Use the following case study to answer the questions below:
I am busy growing, but am I normal?Since your last birthday, many things have changed. For starters, you are a lot smarter than you were the year before, but there are physical aspects that have changed as well, and you might not be ready for the changes yet. Maybe you have grown a few centimetres more than your friends. Maybe you haven’t grown as much as your friends, and now you feel very short. Maybe you have not gained any weight, and now you feel as light as a feather. Or maybe you gained weight in places you did not even know existed. Now you cannot fit into clothes that fitted perfectly only a couple of months ago. You might look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself: ″Am I normal?”
But what is normal? There is no type of normal. The next time that you walk around the mall, sit down on a bench and look at all the different people around you. You will see tall people, short people, people with curly hair, people with long hair, people with different shaped faces. So, what is normal? There is no such thing as “normal”.
You can paint your nails and cut your hair, but what you look like is not completely under your control. What you look like is mostly dependant on what your parents look like. When you were created, your parent’s genes were transferred to you. Genes are special codes in the human body that determine how big you will be, the shape that you will have, the colour of your eyes as well as the type and colour that your hair will be.
Your length is one of the many qualities that your genes will determine, but you will most likely be the average length of your parents. If both of your parents are short, you will most likely be short as well.
Genes do not determine everything, however. For example, eating healthy can assist in growing to your full potential. Getting enough sleep and exercising regularly can help you develop the way you should.
