The Ministers of Zion: Every member of the congregationThe Rev. Janice Marie E. Lowden, Pastor

From the Pastor’s Keyboard: Why is autumn called “fall”?

I noticed as I drove to the church this morning that the maple tree in the neighbors’ front yard had changed to its fall colors- red, yellow, and orange. It suddenly struck me that the days of September are passing along quite quickly, and before the end of the week, autumn would begin. Before long, the cooler nights and warm days we’ve been experiencing will give way to cold, blustery, winter weather!

Have you ever wondered why most Americans call the autumn season “fall”? The answer is really a quite simple etymology. We call the season between the autumnal equinox (September 21 or 22 when there are equal hours of daytime and nighttime) and the winter solstice (December 21 or 22, the year’s shortest day) “fall” because….are you ready?....drum roll, please: because this is the season when the leaves FALL off of the trees.

It would certainly be nice if all questions were as easy as that one to answer. There are many other questions that occur in one’s lifetime that seem anywhere from very difficult to impossible to answer.

“Why do bad things happen to good people?” Volumes have been written in attempts to answer this question, yet, for me, there has been no satisfactory answer. Only God knows.

During the month of October, the lectionary includes a continuous reading of the Old Testament book of Job. These readings will be the focus of sermons during the 8 a.m. services Oct. 7th through 28th. This book is a place that many turn when faced with trials and suffering.

At the very beginning, we learn what a good and upright man Job is and how he is regarded well by God and by his community. In Chapter 1, he is described this way, “That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.” Life was

good for Job, until the Lord allows a heavenly (yes, “heavenly”!) being named “Satan” to mess around with Job’s life.

(Cont’d on page 2) First, everything that Job cares about is taken away. Then his health is destroyed. Why? Satan wants to find out if Job can be broken down enough to curse God for all the bad things that happen to him.

It’s interesting to me that people talk about the “patience of Job.” Job complains like the best of them. He is very human in that respect. His lament in the book is long and painful to read. He calls on the Lord for help and for answers, yet Job does not blame God for his suffering. Instead, he begs for forgiveness for whatever way he has offended the Lord. In the midst of his pain, he expresses his sense of abandonment and despair, but he stands firm against friends that encourage him to give up his faith and his hope that God will intercede and bring his suffering to an end.

When we ponder the “why” questions about suffering and heartache, Job’s story may not have easy answers. However, his words in Chapter 19:25-27 are pure Gospel that we may take to heart to sustain us. “25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; 26 and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, 27 whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.” (NRSV)

No matter what pain and suffering may befall us in our earthly lives, God has plans for us that extend even after death. Thanks be to God!

CHRIST LUTHERAN MEAL MINISTRYby Linda Bear

Plenty of food with just a few leftovers, cheerful volunteers, satisfied guests, and a final compliment, “This is the best meal I have had all summer!” provided us with the gift of joy as we packed our cars, made one last check, and locked the doors before our return trip to Zion. “How delightful is a timely word.” (Proverbs 15:23) A big shout of joy and thanks goes out to all who make this meal possible-obtaining supplies, placing food orders, pick-up and delivery, food prep, baking, set-up, hosting, serving, and clean-up. It is a huge undertaking with a lot of behind the scenes work…and, of course, more volunteers are always needed and welcomed!

Mark your calendars now for Thursday, November 8, and join us for the last Christ Lutheran Meal

scheduled for 2012!

HEAD TO HEART CONFIRMATION : A NEW YEAR OF LEARNING EVENTS

On September 16th, the H2H Confirmation students, their parents and some siblings gathered with Pastor JMe for the first official Family Learning Event of the new confirmation season. After a pizza dinner, the group participated in activities designed to give an introduction to the Old Testament. The evening included a “Ssssnake Support Group” skit, Fink Mania Quiz Bowl, and a rousing rap song naming all the books of the Old Testament- complete with a line “dance” of shoulder massage. We divided up into small groups for sharing of “highs and lows,” discussion of the bible time passage, and prayers. To conclude the time together, we gathered in the Worship Area for a service of commitment and blessing for parents and their children.

As in the past, H2H students will meet weekly during the Sunday School hour for learning and

small group times. The year will also include three more Family Learning Events. Seven High School Youth Mentors will assist Pastor JMe with the program. They are: Sarah Thompson, Kayla Gromen, Cameron Thompson, Andrew Sherwood, Alec Martin, Tyler Gunzenhauser, and Duncan Brady.

2012-2013 H2H students include: Aimee Censier, Delaney Klepper, Andrew Jarvie, Eleanor Barley, Anna Benedict, Bryce Burfete, Christopher Chapman, Alex Groff, Amanda Grube, Quinn Klepper, Ian Flood, Elisabeth Chapman, Christian Benedict, and Catherine Donell.

Please keep these young people in your prayers as they prepare for Affirmation of Baptism. Also pray for their parents as they continue to fulfill the promises made at the baptisms of their children.

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOLThe new Sunday School year has begun! This year, Zion will be implementing a new program. Children ages 2 through 4th grade will be studying both the old and the new testaments using the SparkHouse Holy Moly Series.

Children in 5th and 6th grades will use the Connect series, a more in-depth “tween”-friendly program.

Don’t forget your offering!! Sunday School offering is collected each week. Last year, $500 was collected for the ELCA’s Malaria campaign. This year, the offering will be used to purchase chicks through the ELCA’s World Hunger “Buck-a-Chick” program.

Remember….Sunday School is a partnership between the teachers and the parents. Our teachers are committed to bringing quality teaching to your children, but they need your help! Please bring your children to class on time each week. Also, please take the time to review and discuss the lessons at home. If you are interested, they will be too!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

There are currently two classes held! One of the classes is studying what it really means to be a disciple. Using the video series, "In the Dust of the Rabbi", narrated by Ray van der Laan, the class is exploring the cultural and theological background of the early Jewish/Christian communities as a counter-culture to the Hellenistic world to proclaim the very words of God. Through the

video and discussion, a group of Christians on a

spiritual tour of Galilee and Asia Minor are followed. The message of the video is a powerful experience

which helps teach how to become a disciple of Christ.

The other class is using The Wired Word, an adult Sunday School curriculum which confronts topics currently in the news with Scripture. In this class, lessons will be tied to current events and what is happening in the world around us.

FOOD PANTRYby Diane Gerlach

During the month of August, the food pantry served 191 families which included 77 seniors, 272 children, and 337 adults, for a total of 686 people served during the month.

Thank you to Zion members who contributed 179 pounds of food and $100 during the month of August. Food donations from all sources totaled 9,579 pounds in August. Several of Zion’s “summer farmers” contributed fresh produce from their gardens over the summer months. Our clients are especially grateful for these food items.

Volunteers from our pantry (Dave Bleil, Diane Gerlach, Lynda Sherwood and Lynn Watson) were able to visit the relocated Manheim Area Food Pantry on their “re-opening day,” September 6. They moved from Zion Lutheran Church in Manheim to the vacated parsonage of Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim. This new location gives the Manheim pantry additional space to expand their services. Presently the pantry is under the umbrella of the Manheim Area Ministerium. The pantry steering committee will be organizing its own Board of Directors who will work towards the goal of being self-sufficient.

Hempfield Area Food Pantry Board members, Joan Garner and Judy Kline, represented Hempfield at the Central Penn Food Bank Appreciation Day Conference in Harrisburg on Friday, September 14.

Bible Characters and Their Stories: A Narrative LectionaryIn September, those who attend the 10:30 a.m. worship service began the process of reading “through the bible” in order to hear the stories of and learn life lessons from significant fathers (and mothers) of our biblical faith. The purpose of the series is to connect the narratives of the Old Testament to the Salvation Story that culminates in the New Testament of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This “narrative lectionary” began with the stories of Creation, Adam and Eve, Joseph, and the Passover.

During October, we will focus on stories of the Old Testament (or the Hebrew Scriptures) from: Exodus 32:1-14 (Moses and the golden calf); 1 Samuel 1:9-11, 19-20; 2:1-10 (Hannah and Samuel);2 Samuel 7:1-17 (David);and 1 Kings 5:1-5, 8:27-30, 41-43 (Solomon)

Since there are large portions of the stories of these biblical characters that we will not have the time in worship to cover, you are invited to read along in the Old Testament to fill in the gaps. Not only will this help you to be more prepared for hearing and participating in the Sunday sermons, it will also give you a better understanding of the connection of these stories to the whole salvation story. It may, also, be a means of working toward checking off that “read the entire bible” item on your “bucket list”!_____________________________________________________________________________

Annual Pet Blessing Service: October 6 @ 10 a.m. A tradition in both Roman Catholic and Protestant churches is to hold a special service for the “Blessing of the Animals” during the first week of October. This celebration is in honor of St. Francis of Assissi whose feast day is October 4th. St. Francis was known to love all living things and to be especially kind to animals.

You are invited to bring your family pet to church on October 6 th for a special service of blessing. The service will be held by the large wooden cross near the Children’s Garden behind Cooper House (the house beside Zion at 75 E. Brandt where the church offices are located). Please bring dogs on leashes and cats and other small animals in carriers or cages. Each pet will receive an individual blessing and a small gift. There will be treats for both humans and their animal companions after the service. Please sign up for the Pet Blessing on the bulletin board in the front foyer of the church building or call the office to indicate your desire to participate with your pet. In the case of inclement weather, we will hold the Pet Blessing on Sunday, October 7, at 1 p.m.

Prayer for your pet: In your infinite wisdom, Lord God, when You created the Universe You blessed us with living creatures. We especially thank You for giving us our pets who are our friends and who bring us so much joy in life. Their presence very often helps us get through trying times. Kindly bless my pet. May my pet continue giving me joy and remind me of Your power. May we realize that as our pets trust us to take care of them, so we should trust You to take care of us, and in taking care of them we share in Your love for all Your creatures. Enlighten our minds to preserve all endangered species so that we may continue to appreciate all of Your creations. Grant this though Christ our Lord. Amen. ______________________________________________________________________________

Stephen Ministries at Zion:Coming in 2013

At the September Council Meeting, the Care Team presented a budget proposal that includes the fees for registering Zion as a Stephen Ministries Congregation and for training of Pastor JMe and at least two Stephen Ministers.  After a presentation by the pastor, the Council approved the proposal.

Members of the Care Team attended an introductory workshop on the organization of Stephen Ministries in the congregation on Sept. 29.  This program is designed to complement pastoral care within a congregation as well as enhance the community's ability to care for and support  its members in times of difficult life changes, illness, and crisis.  Established Stephen Ministries congregations have found this program to be instrumental in the health and spiritual growth of their members and of the congregations as a whole.   The initial cost of establishing this program within a congregation has been found to be worth every penny, and there are congregations that have been supporting and growing their Stephen Ministries programs for more than 20 years because they are so beneficial to their communities.

There will be a future presentation on Stephen Ministries in order to provide information and receive support from the Zion community for this new venture in our ministry.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY & CROP WALK – OCTOBER 21

Sunday, October 21st, will be “Bread for the World Sunday.” The readings, message and activities for the day will focus on Christian response to domestic and international issues regarding food and water. Joyful Noise Offerings received during the worship services will go to benefit the Lancaster CROP Hunger Walk. CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local volunteers to raise funds to end hunger. That afternoon at 1:00, youth and adult members of Zion will participate in the Lancaster CROP Hunger Walk along with people from other churches and organization. The affects of hunger and unhealthy water sources continue to plague people throughout our world, especially in developing nations and areas devastated by natural disasters or war. Please be generous with your pledges for Zion’s CROP Walk participants, and don’t forget your spare change for the Joyful Noise Offering taken during the church service that morning!
