Introduction
Updated 13 April 2010
Some years ago, Gerald Fasbender researched Family History Library (FHL) Microfilm 0741850 in his search of his Zieski (Zieske) Family ancestors. This is also my primary source for protestant church records.
Volume 1 of this film is for Putzighauland. You will find more complete extractions for Volume 2, Putzig, where I first found family. Volume 3 is a continuation of the Putzighauland records found in Volume 1.
As my wife and I progressed in our search for her ZIESKE, we expanded to include other searchers from three other same or similar named family units that could be related. More recently, in late 2009 and 2010 we have added two more Zieske groups: Holland Michigan Zieske and Gustav Zieske of Wanatah, Indiana.
Family Finds, as I call them, are usually identified by one or more of the 4 Zieske family group names: Fasbender (Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz) group; Bloedow (Michael Zieske & Anna Christina Schulz) group; Neumann (Wilhelm Zieske & Wilhelmine Burk) group; and Lisko (Michael Zieske & Wilhemina Sonnenberg) group. The two new groups are Holland Michigan Zieske (Gottlob Zieske & Caroline Werth); and Gustav Zieske group (Gustav Zieske & Ottillia Feldman).
The family or surname we search is spelled many ways. The most common are: Zieske, Zieski, Ziske, Zisk and Ziesk. Older, early- and pre-1800 records may have the surname as Ciesk, Cysk or Cisk. Exact surname spelling is a clue, not proof, to family relationship.
Since each of these 4 family groups, today, spells their name Z-I-E-S-K-E, for convenience only, I will often use the label ZIESKE to describe the family or families we research. Thus, this is a “Zieske” research document.
Many of the records in this report are incomplete. Some of these serve as bookmarks, records that may have future value. I am the main researcher and I have little or no German language skills except for 1 year of college German forty-five years ago followed by two years living in Germany while in the U.S. Army. However, for the more critical records, I have the advantage of those of our Zieske Research Group who have these skills.
Parish and City Names Then and Now for the Area We Search in Prussia
Berlin, Germany is about 480 km (about 320 miles) west of Warsaw, Poland. Midway between Berlin, Germany and Warsaw, Poland, and a little closer to Berlin, is Poznan, Poland. North-northwest of this city, about 70 km (44 miles) is the city, Czarnikau (Czarnkow). Our interest is the area just west of Czarnikau, (See maps below) and north of the Netze River, in the former Netzedistrkt. Today, this area we search has about the following highway boundaries: Highway 177 on the west; 180 on the north; 153 on the east; and 174 on the south. Prior to 1887, this area we search was part of Kreis Czarnikau.
Prussian jurisdictions were renamed. For the period of our search, from 1818 to 1887, there was no Kreis (county) Filehne, and all of that area was part of Kreis Czarnikau. When the area became modern day Poland, the German named villages were renamed to Polish names of today. Following is a list of villages that are relevant to our Zieske search. These are generally within or close to the boundaries I described above. The modern (Polish) name is in parens. Any village located in Kreis Filehne would have been in the west end of what was for purposes of our research, Kreis Czarnikau. Distance given between villages is in kilometers. Distance is measured straight line. Some of these villages were very close to each other.
Ascherbude (Biernatowo): Kreis Filehne; Pommern/Posen (Wielkopolskie). Ascherbude is 8 km northwest of Putzig.
Follstein (Folsztyn): Kreis Filehne; Posen (Pilskie). Follstein is directly west of Putzig about 9 km, north of the Netze River.
Gross-Kotten (Kocien Wielki): Kreis Filehne, Posen (Wielkopolskie). This village is west of Ascherbude 4 km and listed as G. Kotten; it is 10 km from Putzig which lies to its southeast. The 1905 population is 475.
Grünfier (Zielonowo): Kreis Filehne; Posen (Pilskie). This is 5 km straight west of Putzig and 5 km south of Ascherbude.
Hammer (Kuznica Czarnkowska): Kreis Czarnikau; Posen (Wielkopolskie). It is about 9 km northeast of Putzig and less from Putzighauland. The population in 1905 is 1130.
Ludwigsdorf (Kaladek): kreis Filehne; Posen (Wielkopolskie). It is 7 km west of Neuhofen and Neuhofen is just west of Putzig.
Neuhofen (Nowe Dwory): kreis Filehne; Posen (Wielkopolskie). To the east 5 km is Putzig and then Putzighauland is 4 km east of Putzig.
Putzig (Jedrzejewo); Kreis Czarnikau: Pommern (Pilskie). Putzig is 4 km west of Putzighauland. Population in 1773 was 324; population in 1930 was 1540.
Putzighauland (Gajewo): Kreis Czarnikau; Posen (Pilskie). Putzighauland is 4 km east of Putzig and about 8 km west of City of Czarnikau in Posen. Population in 1905 was 594.
Radosiew (Radosiew or Radosiewo): Kreis Czarnikau; Posen (Wielkopolskie). It is about 8 km northeast of Putzig or 5 km north northeast of Putzighauland. Population in 1905: 269.
Runau (Runowo): kreis Czarnikau; Posen (Pilskie). This village is very near Stieglitz to the southeast by about 3 km. It is north and little east of Puzig by 6 km. The population in 1905 is 549.
Stieglitz (Siedlisko); Kreis Czarnikau; Posen (Pilskie). Stieglitz is straight north of Putzig about 8 km.
The area we search, the area our Zieske ancestors (by whatever spelling) appear to have called “Home” is within the maps below. The first map includes the expanded search area; the second map focuses on the area surrounding Putzig and Putzighauland.
The area included in each map was once part of Posen, Prussia and is now of modern day Poland. Kreis Czarnikau and later also Kreis Filehne are withint Posen, Prussia.
Political and government boundaries play a role in our search. As I understand, the area we search was in constant turmoil from at least 1750 to 1850. Turmoil and war lead to many boundary changes over time.
In 1818, kreis (county) Czarnikau was founded. Then, in 1887, this exact land area was divided into two parts: kreis Czarnikau (east part) and kreis Filehne west part). Our research is for the period in advance of the 1887 division. Therefore, unless otherwise noted, all reference to kreis Czarnikau in this research is to the kreis Czarnikau as it existed prior to 1887.
Most of our Prussian records are from the period of the “old” and “original” kreis Czarnikau that existed from 1818-1887. The church records for the period may be either catholic or protestant. Five catholic churches were located within kreis Czarnikau at the following cities: Czarnikau, Behle, Lubasz, Filehne and Schneidemühlchen. Catholic records found in Kreis Czarnikau are located with one of these churches. Protestant records are found by village name. Villages often organized to share a protestant priest to meet their religious needs.
Regarding the area maps below, notice the city of Czarnikau in the southeast corner of each of the maps. Czarnikau was the capital of kreis (county) Czarnikau. As such, this was the location where duplicates of Kreis Czarnikau area church records were gathered.
At middle lower of the maps are Putzig and just to the right and east is Putzig-Hauland. I often spell this village as Putzighauland. Northwest of Putzig about 10 km is Ascherbude. And then further Northwest of Ascherbude about 10 km is Gross Kotten (G. Kotten). Northeast of Ascherbude 10 km is Stieglitz. Stieglitz is probably 12km directly north of Putzig. Directly north of Czarnikau only about 8-10 km are Hammer and Radosiew.
Our current research is centered with Putzig and Putzig-Hauland (Putzighauland). But this research expands to include Ascherbude, Follstein, Gross Kotten, Hammer, Radosiew, Stieglitz and other area communities where we have found ZIESKE.
Microfilm 0741850 Description
Volume 1 Description: Putzighauland Parish. 1808-1854. Akta Urodzin, Malz., Zgonow (Births, Marriages, Deaths). Microfilmed 17 June 1970 by the Genealogical Society of Salt Lake City, Utah. Parish: Ewang. Jedrzejowskie (Putzig) Holendry. Archives: A. P. Poznan. Filmed at A.D.M. Warszawa. Reduction 13. Note: this is Putzighauland Parish (today, Gajewo).
Clarification from Familysearch.org: Parish register of baptisms, marriages, and deaths for Putzighauland, (Kreis Czarnikau), Posen, Germany; now Gajewo (Trzcianka), Poznań, Poland. Left-side pages (l. S.) filmed separately from right-side pages (r. S.) and sometimes in reverse order (rückw.). Some title boards incorrectly identify this locality as Jędrzejewo (Trzcianda), Poznań, Poland.
Note: Putzighauland is, today, Gajewo; Putzig is Jedrzejewo. The Trzcianka reference is likely to village location within a county. Old German city, Schönlanke is, today, Trzcianka. For prior to 1887, both villages covered in this film were part of kreis Czarnikau. Kreis Czarnikau was formed in 1818. In 1887, this area was divided into two kreis: Czarnikau and kreis Filehne. The new boundaries appear to have placed Putzig in kreis Filehne and Putzighauland in kreis Czarnikau. But for this research, the combined areas of what later are kreis Czarnikau and kreis Filehne are known then only as kreis Czarnikau.

Other Microfilm Description
FHL 0741850 is the primary microfilm for this research. This film covers only Putzig and Putzighauland, for limited years and protestant records only.
Other microfilms supplement FHL 0741850. The primary supplement is a series of films: FHL 0808104 to 0808125. This series covers catholic and non-catholic records for nearly all communities within kreis Czarnikau, Posen District of Prussia. These are duplicate records. These records were annually (or close to) taken from individual original church records and combined for the kreis Czarnikau area.
Note: There is no table of contents or index for each film and village records are in no particular village order, A-Z or other, from one film to the next. Catholic records are grouped by each of the five catholic church centers and protestant records tend to be grouped by village where multiple villages are part of, for instance, a three-village protestant church area sharing one priest.
Each film covers a one or more year period as follows:

1. There are 4, not 3 volumes in this film as the film description suggests. The LDS listing says there are three items. I found four. Below, I accept that they list 3 items but I describe what I see as 4 volumes. Actually, "item" is "volume".
2. Volume 1 is for another area (Evangelische Kirche Buk (Kr. Grätz) as described by familysearch.org. These Vol 1 records begin with Page 190 (1878 Deaths) and go to Page 536 (1919 Deaths). Because the first page is 190, the film must have picked up from where another film stopped. Per Ken, Buk is about 27 km southwest of the Town of Posen (Poznan) and not of the area we search.
3. Volumes 2-4 are Evangelical Parish of Czarnikau records. Included are Czarnikau Town and surrounding villages of this parish. Some of these villages are not as familiar to us as are others. But all of these towns and villages a part of the parish.
It is these Volumes that are renumbered on the microfilm by cross-out. Volume 2 is Volume 2, no change. But then, instead of there being one more volume on the film (3 items in total), there are, instead, two more volumes and thus 4 items on the film. Below, I will discuss these volumes in terms of their new volume name I gave them:
a. Volume 2 of the film is 1787-1830 marriage records for the Evangelical Parish of Czarnikau, including Czarnikau town and surrounding towns. That fits the description above. This is page 1 - 329. Marriages are followed by a birth index covering late 1700s into early 1800s plus.This index is likely for Volume 3. The birth index is pages 341- 399.
b. Volume 3 is really ten (10) chapters of the record book, or, ten separate books. They are separated only by the written book or chapter Title. In any case, there are ten separate sections within Volume 3. Each section has records for some combination of villages/towns of the Evangelical Parish of Czarnikau. My description below is a guide, it is not perfect.
Here are the ten groups without much specifics (the specifics are in Ken's Emails that I will forward separately). The source book for the records as found on FHL 1191147 for all of the follow ten sections appears to be Volume IIa (1781-1806), Evangelical Parish of Czarnikau:
1. 1781-1786 (page 1-78) Birth/Baptisms: Czarnikau Town and surrounding towns;
2. 1790-1809 (page 80-113) Birth/Baptisms: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Schmischkowe, Belsin, Demben and Pianowke), not including Czarnikau Town;
3. 1790-1809 (page 115-132) Deaths: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Schmischkowe, Belsin, Demben and Pianowke), not including Czarnikau Town;
4. 1790-1801 (page 133-152) Marriages: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Schmischkowe, Belsin, Briesen, Zarben, Kruschewo, __[?] Hammer, Zischkowe), not including Czarnikau Town;
5. 1790-1801 (page 159-196) Birth/Baptisms: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Briesen, Zarben, Kruschewo and Falkowitz), not including Czarnikau Town;
6. 1790-1802 (page 199-214) Deaths: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Fitzerie, Briesen, Zarben, Kruschewo and Falkowitz), not including Czarnikau Town;
7. 1790-1803 (page 221-258) Birth/Baptisms: Hammer and Radosiew and no Czarnikau Town of Czarnikau parish;
8. 1790-1808 (page 260-262) Deaths: Hammer and Radosiew and no Czarnikau Town of Czarnikau parish;
9. 1790-1803 (page 301-317) Birth/Baptisms: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Czischkowe, Guren, Guray and Gultsche Mühle), not including Czarnikau Town;
10. 1790-1806 (page 322-329) Deaths and Birth/Baptisms: Czarnikau surrounding towns only (Czischkowe, Guren, Guray and Gultsche Mühle), not including Czarnikau Town.
This ends Volume 3.
Note: the last phrase (Taufen 1787-1818) of the FHL 1191147 description (above) by Family History Library Catalog, is new Volume 4 of this film. Working backward from that phrase, the next five phrase descriptions essentially match my 10, 9, 8, 7 and 6 above. Then it appears that my 5, 4, 3 and 2 are their "FHL Taufen 1781-1809 (Umgebung)". My 1. is their Taufen 1781-1809 (Stadt). But I see some surrouding towns also in my 1. Their Heiraten 1787-1830 part of the description is thus my Volume 2.
c. Volume 4: FHL Volume 4 is coverd by the last FHL description phrase: Taufen 1787-1818.
The first section of Volume 4 begins at page 552 and is a birth index, probably for records that follow in this volume and as they are continued in FHL 1191148. This birth index ends on page 620. The index is immediately followed by Evangelical Parish of Czarnikau birth records for 1787-1818 per the written Title from the church book. These birth records are actually old Volume III of the parish, per the written Title. The birth records begin on page 1 and October 1785 and the last records in FHL1191147 are June 1801 births and page 154.. These birth records are mixed Czarnikau town and surround towns as are the birth records in FHL 1191148. Volume 1 of FHL 1191148 picks up on the birth records in 1801 and continues forward.

1801-1837Evangelisch Kirchenbuch 1781-1877
FHL 1194685Index to catholic records of Czarnikau found in FHL 2121445, 2121446 and 2121447. Includes births, deaths and marriages for parts of 1883-1901.
For FHL 1194685, marriage records are indexed alphabetically by the husband’s surname but with the wife’s surname and/or given name included in the line item. Other records are indexed alphabetically by surname.
Line items for records indexed include a page number location in FHL 2121445, 2121446 or 2121447. Both the type of event and year of the event determine which film to search. Content and layout of each of those films is described below under each microfilm.
You may find that the original page number found in the Index is one of two page numbers found on a film’s page that contains the record you seek. In such instances, the event type (baptism, marriage, death) and the year are more important than page number in determining which film to search.
Page numbers for a volume may be specific only to that volume.

Parents: Johann Liske & Anna Elizabeth Pulsfuss
Sponsors: Martin Hinz; Martin Beutler and Anna Justina Hanelt Beutler
Note: This record is on the same page as the record for Child: Michael born 1825, father Michael Breitkreutz. This record is two lines before that record for Michael. It is possible the lines were numbered after the records were posted so to reflect the order of baptism. It is also possible that these numbers for all the records in this part of Volume 1 are either family or farm numbers and not baptism line numbers. For instance, Breitkreutz births always seem to be listed with a “line” 2.

*STEINKE | HOLZ
Marriage: 4 Apr 1844
Pensioner Martin Steinke age 54 of Putzighauland married his 5th wife, the widow Anna Christina Holz age 53 called Steinke (her prior married name) from Stieglitz.
Note: Possible Family Find: Fasbender. After much Putzighauland and Steiglitz Steinke Family research, I am certain now that this man is not the father of Louise Steinke who married Johann Ziske (Zieski) on 2 Feb 1847 in Stieglitz. The Martin Steinke of this record, however, could be related to Louise Steinke through her father, also a Martin Steinke, but of Stieglitz. And this Anna Christina Holz could be the widow (but not Louise Steinke’s mother) of Louise Steinke’s father, Martin Steinke of Stieglitz who died 11 March 1844, less than a month before this marriage of 4 April 1844.
Translation by Ken Neumann follows: “2.” says it is the 2nd marriage for the year. “1844 / den 4t / April” means the date of marriage is 4 April 1844. The main part of the record says, “wurde der Leibgedinger / Martin Steinke von hier / mit seiner 5t Frau, der / Wittwe Anna Christina / Holz g[enannt] Steinke aus Stieglitz copulirt.” (Translation: the pensioner) Martin Steinke from here was married with his 5th wife, the widow Anna Christina Holz called Steinke from Stieglitz.) It’s hard to translate “Leibgedinger” in a short phrase. It’s a person who receives negotiated benefits. It often happens when he or she sells some property such as a house or cottage. In return he or she might get food or money. It would seem Martin is from “here” (Putzighauland), while the bride, a widow, Martin’s 5th wife, is from Stieglitz. The abbreviation after “Holz” is a “g” followed by a squiggle to indicate an abbreviation. So I understand it to be “genannt” or “called Steinke”, her married name. Her previous marriage was to another Steinke, perhaps to a brother or cousin. Under the marital state of each, it says “Sind verheirathet gewesen” (have been married). Their ages are 54 (b ca 1789) and 53. Under consent columns it says “Soldat ständig” (permanent soldier), which probably means consent was not needed or else it was not possible to get due to his being a soldier. Under the column for “Behörden” (boards), and whether they approved the marriage, the answer is “Keine” (none). Their being two widowed people probably meant such consent was unnecessary. The banns were proclaimed on 17 Martz, 7 and 8 April. Translation by Ken Neumann, 3 March 2008.

STEINKE | MITTELSTAEDT
Marriage: 29 Sep 1844
Oldest daughter of Martin Steinke, Anna Christina Steinke, age 31 & Gottfried Mittelstaedt, age 30.
Note: This record, in the church book, is directly below that of the marriage of Martin Steinke and Anna Christina Holz.
Translation by Ken Neumann follows: It is the marriage of Martin Steinke’s oldest daughter (“älteste Tochter”) Anna Christina Steinke, age 31 when married 29 Sep 1844 to Gottfried Mittelstaedt, age 30 . Gottfried was the surviving youngest son of the “Kolonist” who died at Sophienberg, Andreas Mittelstaedt. They were both unmarried at the time of their marriage. Consent was given by the parents.

Note: Possible Family Find: Fasbender. This record is from two sources. This child could be Louise Steinke’s who later married Johann Ziske, son of Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz. This child could be Johann’s wife child before theirmarriage. However, the sponsor “Martin Hinz” in this record helps confirm that this is likely the Louise Steinke born 5 Mar 1821 to Martin Steinke & Dorothea Sophia nee Lehmann of Putzighauland and not Louise Steinke who married Johann Ziske.

*ZISKE | BREITKREUTZ
+Marriage: 6 Jan 1856
Johann Ziske & Anna Rosina Breitkreutz. He is age 34, she is age 22. Married in Putzig. Johann is independent. Consent for the bridegroom [at] Schönlanke the 29th of October 1855.
Note: Family Find. Fasbender. Is the 2nd Marriage of Johann Ziske, son of Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz.
Note: This record was incorrectly recorded in this report as a Putzig activity until 3 July 2008. The error was due to an error in believing that Vol 3 of this film is Putzig. It is not. It is Putzighauland, only.
Translation and Comments by Ken Neumann: the groom apparently needed to get some official OK since he had been married and it needed to be officially made certain that he was indeed a true widower and able to get married. Michael Breitkreutz is a “Leibgedinger”, one whom I understand to be one who is guaranteed a house and income in return for turning over his estate to the heir of his estate, usually the most senior of his children. This procedure happened to take care of retired people. Is something there that says it is not the first marriage. Yes, there is—where the first line reads “wird der Häusler Johann Ziske,”, you can note the smaller words above “Häusler Johann” which are meant to be an insert between those two words, “u. Wittwer” (“und Wittwer”, and widower). So it tells us that Johann was a widower as he enters this second marriage.

*CISK (= ZIESKE, ZISKE) | STELTER
Marriage: 16 Nov or Dec 1766
Michael Cisk (= Zieske) & Christina Sztelterowna (= Stelter), both still unmarried.
Sponsors: Andreas Polsfut (= Polsfuß) and Paul Szwark (= Schwark)
Note: Family Find. All Zieske, possible. This Michael Cisk could be the common ancestor of many Ziske already found in records. Also, Stelter is the same surname as the wife of Peter Zieske born 1797 and married Anna Dorothea Stelter on 27 Nov 1823 in Gross Kotten. Peter Zieske is believed to be a child of a Michael Zieske and it could be this Michael Cisk. Peter’s mother, however, is believed to be an Elisabeth Polsfuß, the name of the 2nd wife of the Michael Cisk of this marriage record. All of this is speculation at this point.
Note: The priest is Peter Westfal. This groom may be of one or more of the Ziske groups we search. This appears to be the 1st marriage of Michael Cysk who on 10 Sep 1769 married Elisabeth Polsfuß in a 2nd marriage for him. The month of this 1766 marriage may be November or December. The records show no December events but many in November. It is unlikely that there were no December events, but, possible.

BREITKREUTZ | BEUTLER
Marriage: 10 Sep 1769
Peter Breitkreutz & Maria Bydlerowona (= Beutler)
Sponsors: Michael Beym and Mathias Szmiten (= Schmidt)
Note: This could be a double marriage with the Michael Cysk & Elisabeth Polsfuß marriage, also on 10 Sep 1769 (record next below). Both marriages are performed by the same priest (Peter Westfal) on the same day. This marriage record is listed just before the marriage record for Michael Cysk & Elisabeth Polsfuß. Why I believe this could be a double marriage is that the Breitkreutz, Bydter (Beutler), Cysk (Ziske) and Polsfuß families have strong connections later in time and may have already had those connections at this date.
