as one of four attorneys now certified by theNational Association of Counsel for Children
as a child welfare law specialist.
Volunteer Spotlight: Katherine Baird
The GALA Foundation has been developing our fundraising capacity. We have a few fundraising events coming up to establish ourselves, and our cause in the community.

October 1st 2010: FRIDAY OCTOBER 1ST is our next fundraising event. We are holding this event at Black Fin which is located Uptown in the EpiCentre. We will be selling Charlotte Checkers' hockey tickets for their opening game on October 15th, 2010. Tickets are available for a discounted
Mecklenburg Guardian ad Litem Advocacy Foundationprice of $15 of which $6 will go back to support the GALA Foundation. Join in the fun….we have a prize for the volunteer who sells the most tickets!!!
March 2011: The Foundation is also planning a Basketball Fundraiser featuring the Harlem Ambassadors which is a traveling basketball showcase. The tentative event date is March 12, 2011. The planning committee is being formed now, please contact us if you are interested in helping.
Tutoring project: We have established a partnership with GAL, YFS, and UNCC to work on securing tutors for our children in care who are struggling academically. We are working on developing other community partnerships to recruit and train tutors for our
tutoring project for the children in care. The tutoring project is currently in development. For more information or to join this committee please contact us.
Cases for Kids: We collect donations of new and gently used suitcases and backpacks for the children in care. If you have a child in care that presently needs a bag please contact us at [email protected] and we can coordinate with you to get a bag to give to your child at your next visit. The Foundation is developing strategies to improve this project and make it sustainable by partnering with other community organizations, and businesses.

Katherine Baird is an extraordinary volunteer. When Katherine was sworn in on 5/26/2009 she was met with a unique request. There was a 17 year old girl who had spent the past 6 years in YFS custody and had been assigned 2 previous volunteers. The child requested during a team meeting that a new GAL volunteer be assigned. Katherine was immediately met with a challenge as this child experienced many placement changes, AWOL’s, and other instabilities. Katherine remained committed and managed to develop a trusting relationship with this child despite the child’s instability. What makes this story extraordinary? While assigned this case, Katherine accepted a job in Virginia. Although Katherine’s new schedule was challenging enough traveling to Virginia for the work week and back home for the weekends with her husband and other responsibilities, she managed to maintain the GAL volunteer/foster child relationship by visiting with the child during the weekends in Charlotte, writing reports and participating in team meetings via conference calls. Since this time the child has turned 18, left the foster care system and Katherine is no longer able to volunteer due to the very hectic travel schedule. But, due to Katherine’s strong commitment to this child, our program, and her oath, this child did not experience another loss of relationship or age out of the system without a strong advocate. Way to go Katherine! Your hard work and dedication to this child and our program were truly appreciated!
