    The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus(UNMC) is a world-class international institutionproviding the unique opportunity to gain a top-quality UK degree whilst studying in Malaysia.In 2000 The University of Nottingham becamethe first British university to set up a branchcampus in Malaysia, earning the Queens Awardfor Enterprise 2001 and the Queens Awardfor Industry (International Trade) 2006.     The University of Nottingham model shapes the approachto teaching at UNMC. Our degrees are University ofNottingham degrees, and are subject to the same qualityassurance processes.

    Students graduate with a degree from The University ofNottingham, whether they complete their programmes at ourcampuses in the UK, China or Malaysia and irrespective ofwhich campuses they visited during their programme.

    Our courses and accreditationsWe offer a comprehensive and varied choice of courses,catering to students at all levels, through foundation,undergraduate and postgraduate to PhD. Our degrees areaccredited by international professional bodies such as theAssociation of MBAs, the UK Engineering Council and GeneralPharmaceutical Council (UK), proving that our programmes areinternationally tested for quality.

    Studying in English in MalaysiaAll our degree programmes are taught using English language,

    and you will receive a British-style education. All courseworkmaterial are in English, all examinations and assignments aresubmitted in English.

    All of our courses are taught using a variety of teaching andassessment methods. This can include lectures, workshops,seminars and smaller study groups.     A truly Malaysian settingThe University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus is based ona self-contained site near Semenyih in the state of Selangor,30 kilometers from Malaysias capital city, Kuala Lumpur.

    Rolling hills and lake vi ews provide a stunning backdrop toour green and tranquil campus. The beautiful setting andstate-of-the art teaching, learning, research and leisurefacilities combine to make an inspirational environment forstudying and student life.

    Sports facilitiesWe have a range of sports faciliti es on campus that are opento all students, from serious athletes to casual competitors.Our outdoor facilities include a swimming pool, courts fortennis, netball, basketball and futsal, jogging tracks and amulti-purpose pitch for sports such as football, frisbee,hockey and rugby.

    Indoor facilities include a fully-equipped gym, squash courts,table tennis, and multi-purpose halls for many sports includingbadminton, basketball, futsal and volleyball.

    If you want to get involved in competitive sport, there arelots of opportunities. There are numerous sports clubs to getinvolved with, including basketball, chess, dance, dodgeball,football, frisbee, futsal, netball and scrabble. Students can al soget involved with The University of Nottinghams annual Tri-Campus Games where students from our campuses in China,Malaysia and the UK compete for the title. The games are heldon a different campus each year and are a huge event in theUniversitys sporting calendar.

    We also provide support for students through the UniversityWellbeing and Learning Support, a free and confidentialservice which provides emotional support for any students whomay be experiencing difficulties or worries.     Student AssociationOur Student Association (SA) plays an important role in

    building a students character and leadership qualities.Each year we hold an election to select Student Associationcommittee members and office bearers. Becoming involvedwith the SA is a great opportunity to get more involved instudent life at UNMC. It will gi ve you the opportunity to directlycontribute to the student voice and is a great way to enhanceyour CV.

    The SA facilitates the many societies and associations whichcater for the diverse background of students at UNMC. Theactivities undertaken by these societies and associations arefully supported by the University.

    supportEnglish language supportWe believe that all students have the potential to completetheir studies speaking excellent English. Having a good graspof the English language will not only compliment and enhanceyour learning experience, it will also provide you with the skillsneeded to prosper in an increasingly globalised workplace.

    We provide English language support for all students whoneed it through our in-sessional classes, which are free ofcharge. These may be aimed at generally i mproving yourEnglish, or they may be subject specific, helping you improveyour proficiency in your area of study. If you take our threesemester foundation programme you must take at least onemodule of academic English. This will teach you how expressyourself in the style and format expected by a world-classinternational university.

    Our tutors specialise in the area of English for AcademicPurposes and help students hone your skills in the areas ofreading, writing and speaking. We use up to date teachingmethodology in order to equip you with the skills that you will

    Careers ServiceThe Careers Advisory Service (CAS) can play an importantrole in your development.     Academic and personal tutoring systemTo help you in your academic studies we provide each studentwith a personal tutor, who are usually members of academicstaff involved in the teaching of your course. At the start of eachsemester you will meet with your personal tutor and may turn tothem for advice and help on all academic related matters.

    Student AssociationAs a student at the university, you are automatically a member

    of the Student Association (SA). The SA is run by an ExecutiveCommittee of 10 elected full-time student volunteers holdingvarious portfolios to serve the student community. Being newstudents once themselves, they understand that being awayfrom home can be quite daunting, no matter where you comefrom. That is why the SA Executives take care of the needs ofthe student community to ensure a good student experiencefrom the time you arrive until you graduate.

    The SA encourages you to get to know your peers and getinvolved with the wide range of events and activities organisedby the Student Association Executive and its clubs andsocieties, beginning with the Freshers Week for new students.(See student life page 14).

    Overseas

    opportunitiesIf you are registered for your degree programme at UNMC, youcan access opportunities to study for a period of time outsideof Malaysia.

    Some of our courses include compulsory periods at ourUK campus.

    Inter-campus exchange programmesWe offer a number of exchange opportunities for students tospend either one or two semesters of their studies at our UKor China campuses or at one of our partner universities acrossthe globe.

    Students on an exchange programme continue to pay theirtuition fees to UNMC and pay no tuition fees to the partnerinstitution. Students are responsible for the air tickets,accommodation and living expenses at the host institution.

    Inter-campus transfer programmeStudents registered at The Malaysia Campus are also eligibleto transfer to The University of Nottingham, UK or China after

    at least one year at The Malay sia Campus, provided there isspace at the appropriate school.

    Transfer under this scheme is not available to students on theStudent Exchange Scheme and is restricted by a fixed quotasystem set in the UK.

    The normal fee chargeable for international students at UK orNingbo is applicable to the time spent at the campus, Chinaaccording to the countrys currency exchange.

    Study abroad programmesIn addition to exchange programmes where no additional tuitionfee is required, the University may also offer opportunitiesto study at the UK campus or at one of the approved studyabroad partners elsewhere in the world for an additional f ee.For details, please check with the International Office.

    Summer Institute at Nottingham, UKWe organise a Summer Institute at our UK Campus fora number of undergraduate students at the end of theirthird year.

    The Foundation in Arts and Educationprogramme is designed to provide you withthe level of academic literacy, skills andconfidence to pursue an undergraduatedegree in the arts and social sciences.It is offered by the Centre for EnglishLanguage Education (CELE), housed inthe School of Education, Faculty of Artsand Social Sciences.

    The programme provides an entry route for degree coursesoffered by the Faculty, especially international communicationsstudies, international relations and education. A substantialamount of the content is devoted to oral and writtencommunication, IT and study skills, and certain modules willalso give a general grounding in subject-specific content.

    What is the Foundation in Artsand Education?The foundation programme runs full-time for either threesemesters or two semesters. The three semester programmeis ideal if you have completed a minimum of 11 years of formaleducation. The two semester programme is suitable if youhave completed at least 12 years of formal education butneed to enhance your skills in order to undertake anundergraduate degree.

    After you have successfully completed the foundationprogramme you can go on to study one of our undergraduatedegree programmes.

    How you are taughtThe course is taught in groups of mixed sizes, with much ofthe course taught in groups of 16 or fewer. You will be taughtin innovative ways, designed to help you learn to think issuesthrough for yourself instead of reciting facts. You will b enefitfrom an emphasis on discussion, exploration and evaluation

    of issues, as well as presenting ideas in the style and formatexpected at university level. This interactive and student-focused teaching style will help you to become an independentand active learner.

    What is applied psychology?Applied psychology is concerned with the application ofpsychological science, theory and principles to problems ofeveryday life. Applied psychologists are interested in people,and seek to understand human behaviour and thoughtprocesses.
