Guidance Corner Earth Art Project: Bugs and Blooms Would you like to create a project using recycled materials? The Osceola Green Team is sponsoring a Recycled Garden Art contest called BLOOMS n BUGS Who: any students, families or classes who would like to participate. What: Create a piece of garden art using recycled or reclaimed materials. Your design must be created with at least 75% recycled materials. Art projects must be able to “live in a garden” and withstand the weather. It is suggested that projects be put on a garden stake or stick so that they can be placed in our school gardens for our Art Show in May. When: All projects need to be turned in to Ms. Harrison by Thursday, April 20. CHILD SAFETY MATTERS: This year our students are being introduced to a new curriculum through class guidance, called Child Safety Matters. This research-based, primary prevention education program is designed to educate and empower our children with information and strategies to prevent bullying and all types of child abuse. The program is delivered through a script and power point that includes videos, games, movement and activities. So far, our 2nd – 5th graders have been educated through the program and during the months of April/May our Kindergarten and 1st graders will also take part. To find out more about this state-wide program or to preview it, please go to www.mbchildsafetymatters.org or call Ms. Harrison at 547-3787. All kindergartener and 1st grade students will partake in the program unless a parent completes and OPT OUT form that was sent home.

SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM Applications for the summer program can be downloaded at

any time from the website prior to April 15th at http://www-

grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and click on the Marine Science link.

The link also will have a complete day by day curriculum for

each grade level, parent information, and a video from last

year’s program.

This summer program is available to all students currently

in grades five through seven and has been sponsored by the

school district since 1982. Three eight day sessions are held at

Gamble Rogers Middle School with bus transportation

provided. The dates for the three sessions this summer will be

May 30th through June 8th, June 12th through June 22nd, and

June 26th through July 7th. Small classes of 12-14 students are

separated by grade level. All instructors in the program are St.

Johns County School District teachers.

The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed

experience for responsible students who are interested in

learning about our local marine environments. Learning is

“hands on” in the field with students kayaking, canoeing,

boating, hiking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP,

(stand up paddleboarding), etc. Specific grade level activities

and curriculum are attached to the applications and are also

available from the website.

More information about the program can be had by emailing

[email protected] .

As a reminder…. Osceola has partnered with Circle K Convenience Stores

(formerly Kangaroo) in the “Fueling Our Schools” program

during the current 16-17 school year.

Osceola has a designated gas pump at the local State Road

207/312 store. For every gallon pumped on our designated

pump at this location, Osceola will receive 1 cent per gallon.

This is a super easy way to earn much needed funds for our

school. Please share this information with your family and

friends and help support our school!
