Dr. Emad Osman 14
HTML TagsHTML markup tags are usually called HTML tags• HTML tags are keywords surrounded by angle
brackets like <html>• HTML tags normally come in pairs like <b>
and </b>• The first tag in a pair is the start tag, the
second tag is the end tag• Start and end tags are also called opening
tags and closing tagsDr. Emad Osman 15
HTML Documents = Web Pages
HTML documents describe web pagesHTML documents contain HTML tags
and plain textHTML documents are also called web
pages
Dr. Emad Osman 16
HTML Documents = Web Pages The purpose of a web browser (like Internet Explorer or
Firefox) is to read HTML documents and display them asweb pages. The browser does not display the HTML tags, but uses the tags to interpret the content of the page:
<html><body>
<h1>My First Heading</h1>
<p>My first paragraph.</p>
</body></html>
Dr. Emad Osman 17
Example ExplainedThe text between <html> and
</html> describes the web pageThe text between <body> and
</body> is the visible page contentThe text between <h1> and </h1> is
displayed as a headingThe text between <p> and </p> is
displayed as a paragraphDr. Emad Osman 18

What You Need
You don't need any tools tolearn HTML
You don't need an HTML editorYou don't need a web serverYou don't need a web site
Dr. Emad Osman 19
Editing HTMLHTML can be written and edited using
many different editors likeDreamweaver and Visual Studio.
However, in this tutorial we use a plaintext editor (like Notepad) to edit HTML.
Using a plain text editor is the best way tolearn HTML. Dr. Emad Osman 20
.HTM or .HTML File Extension?
When you save an HTML file, you can use either the .htmor the .html file extension.
There is no difference, it isentirely up to you.Dr. Emad Osman 21

HTML Elements
HTML documents are defined by HTML elements.
Dr. Emad Osman 30
HTML Element Syntax
An HTML element starts with a start tag /opening tag
An HTML element ends with an end tag /closing tag
The element content is everything betweenthe start and the end tag
Some HTML elements have empty contentEmpty elements are closed in the start tagMost HTML elements can have attributesDr. Emad Osman 31
Nested HTML Elements
Most HTML elements can benested (can contain otherHTML elements).
HTML documents consist ofnested HTML elements.
Dr. Emad Osman 32
HTML Document Example
<html>
<body><p>This is my first paragraph.</p></body>
</html>The example above contains 3
HTML elements.Dr. Emad Osman 33
HTML Example Explained
The <p> element:<p>This is my first paragraph.</p>The <p> element defines a paragraph in
the HTML document.
The element has a start tag <p> and anend tag </p>.
The element content is: This is my firstparagraph.
Dr. Emad Osman 34
HTML Example Explained
The <body> element:<body>
<p>This is my first paragraph.</p></body>
The <body> element defines the body ofthe HTML document. The element has a start tag <body> andan end tag </body>.
Dr. Emad Osman 35
HTML Example Explained The <html> element: <html>
<body><p>This is my first paragraph.</p></body>
</html> The <html> element defines the whole HTML document.
The element has a start tag <html> and an end tag</html>.
The element content is another HTML element (the bodyelement). Dr. Emad Osman 36

Don't Forget the End TagSome HTML elements might display
correctly even if you forget the end tag:<p>This is a paragraph
<p>This is a paragraphThe example above works in most
browsers, because the closing tag isconsidered optional.
Never rely on this. Many HTML elementswill produce unexpected results and/orerrors if you forget the end tag .Dr. Emad Osman 37
Empty HTML Elements
HTML elements with no content are calledempty elements.
<br> is an empty element without a closingtag (the <br> tag defines a line break).
Tip: In XHTML, all elements must be closed.Adding a slash inside the start tag, like<br />, is the proper way of closing emptyelements in XHTML (and XML).
Dr. Emad Osman 38
HTML Attributes
HTML elements can have attributesAttributes provide additional
information about HTML elementAttributes are always specified in the
start tagAttributes come in name/value pairs
like: name="value"Dr. Emad Osman 39
Attribute Example
HTML links are defined with the <a> tag.The link address is specified in the hrefattribute:
Example<a href="http://www.google.com">This is a link</a>
HTML Tip: Use Lowercase Attributes
Attribute names and attribute values are case-insensitive.Dr. Emad Osman 40
Always Quote Attribute Values
Attribute values should always be enclosed inquotes.
Double style quotes are the most common, but single style quotes are also allowed.
Tip: In some rare situations, when theattribute value itself contains quotes, it isnecessary to use single quotes: name='John"ShotGun" Nelson'

HTML Headings
Headings are defined with the <h1> to <h6> tags.<h1> defines the most important heading. <h6>
defines the least important heading.Example
<h1>This is a heading</h1><h2>This is a heading</h2><h3>This is a heading</h3>
Note: Browsers automatically add some emptyspace (a margin) before and after each heading.
Dr. Emad Osman 43
HTML Headings Examples
Dr. Emad Osman 44
Headings Are Important inHTML documents
Use HTML headings for headings only. Don't useheadings to make text BIG or bold.
Search engines use your headings to index thestructure and content of your web pages.
Since users may skim your pages by its headings, it isimportant to use headings to show the documentstructure.
H1 headings should be used as main headings, followed by H2 headings, then the less important H3headings, and so on. Dr. Emad Osman 45

HTML LinesThe <hr /> tag creates a horizontal line in an
HTML page.
The hr element can be used to separate content:Example
<p>This is a paragraph</p><hr /><p>This is a paragraph</p><hr /><p>This is a paragraph</p>
Dr. Emad Osman 46

Dr. Emad Osman 47
HTML Comments
Comments can be inserted into the HTML code tomake it more readable and understandable.Comments are ignored by the browser and are notdisplayed.
Comments are written like this:Example
<!-- This is a comment -->
Note: There is an exclamation point after theopening bracket, but not before the closing bracket.
Dr. Emad Osman 48
HTML Comments Example

Dr. Emad Osman 57
HTML Formatting Tags
HTML uses tags like <b> and <i> forformatting output, like bold or italic text.
These HTML tags are called formatting tags.
Remark Often <strong> renders as <b>,and <em> renders as <i>.
Dr. Emad Osman 58
However, there is a difference in the meaning ofthese tags:
<b> or <i> defines bold or italic text only.
<strong> or <em> means that you want the text tobe rendered in a way that the user understands as"important".
Today, all major browsers render strong as bold andem as italics. However, if a browser one day wantsto make a text highlighted with the strong feature, itmight be cursive for example and not bold!

HTML FontsThe HTML <font> Tag Should NOT be Used
The <font> tag is deprecated in HTML 4, andremoved from HTML5.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) hasremoved the <font> tag from its recommendations.
In HTML 4, style sheets (CSS) should be used todefine the layout and display properties for manyHTML elements.
The example below shows how the HTML could lookby using the <font> tag:

Styling HTML with CSS
CSS was introduced together with HTML 4, toprovide a better way to style HTML elements.
CSS can be added to HTML in the followingways:
in Cascading Style Sheet files (CSS files)in the <style> element in the HTML head
sectionin the style attribute in single HTML
elementsDr. Emad Osman 73
Using the HTML StyleAttribute
It is time consuming and not very practical tostyle HTML elements using the style attribute.
The preferred way to add CSS to HTML, is toput CSS syntax in separate CSS files.
However, in this HTML tutorial we willintroduce you to CSS using the style attribute. This is done to simplify the examples. It alsomakes it easier for you to edit the code andtry it yourself.
Dr. Emad Osman 74
HTML Style Example -Background Color
The background-color property defines the background colorfor an element:
Example<html>
<body style="background-color:yellow;"><h2 style="background-color:red;">This is a heading</h2><p style="background-color:green;">This is a paragraph.</p></body>
</html>
<body background="images\Wallpaper1.jpg">Dr. Emad Osman 75
HTML Style Example -Font, Color and Size
The font-family, color, and font-size properties definesthe font, color, and size of the text in an element:
Example<html>
<body><h1 style="font-family:verdana;">A heading</h1><p style="font-family:arial;color:red;font-size:20px;">A paragraph.</p></body>
</html>
Dr. Emad Osman 76
The text-align property specifies the horizontal alignment oftext in an element:
Example<html>
<body><h1 style="text-align:center;">Center-aligned heading</h1><p>This is a paragraph.</p></body>

HTML Link Tags
Tag Description
<a> Defines an anchor
Dr. Emad Osman 79
HTML Hyperlinks (Links) Links are found in nearly all Web pages. Links allow
users to click their way from page to page. A hyperlink (or link) is a word, group of words, or
image that you can click on to jump to a newdocument or a new section within the currentdocument.
When you move the cursor over a link in a Web page, the arrow will turn into a little hand.
Links are specified in HTML using the <a> tag. The <a> tag can be used in two ways:
1. To create a link to another document, by using the href attribute2. To create a bookmark inside a document, by using the name
attribute Dr. Emad Osman 80
HTML Link Syntax
The HTML code for a link is simple. It looks likethis:<a href="url">Link text</a>The href attribute specifies the destination of alink.

In HTML, images are defined with the <img>tag. The <img> tag is empty, which means that itcontains attributes only, and has no closing tag.To display an image on a page, you need to usethe src attribute. Src stands for "source".
The value of the src attribute is the UniformResource Locator (URL) of the image you wantto display. Dr. Emad Osman 87
HTML Image Tags
Tag Description<img /> Defines an image<map> Defines an image-map
<area /> Defines a clickable area insidean image-map
Dr. Emad Osman 88
HTML <map> TagThe <map> tag is used to define a client-side image-map.An image-map is an image with clickable areas.
