FAITH STORIES The Class of 2019 Focus: “Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” —1 Timothy 4:12

*STATEMENT OF FAITH Josh Bodey We believe that God created us for a purpose, here in this church and in the world. We believe that God calls everyone. God understands us at whatever stage of life we find ourselves, and uses all of our gifts, no matter where we are or what we are doing. We believe that Mary, Jesus’ mother, was called as a young woman to fulfill God’s plan, and that Jesus himself was called to serve at young age in the temple. Jesus knew what it was like to experience prejudice because of his ideas, his race, his age, and his beliefs. Jesus also understood that people of all ages were needed to do his good work, like the

young boy who shared his lunch so Jesus could feed the 5,000. We believe that the Holy Spirit has been at work throughout our lives showing us how to serve God and others.

PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS (During the Offertory, please fill out the Fellowship Pads and pass them up and down the pews

in order that we may greet one another by name after worship.)

Offertory Anthem - “For the Beauty of the Earth” John Rutter For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth over and around us lies…

Lord of all, to thee we raise This our joyful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, Hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light…

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild…

For each perfect gift of thine to us all so freely given, Graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven…

SILENT PRAYER, PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Olivia Collins and Abby Lachman

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*HYMN 525 - “Here I Am, Lord” (As a symbol of our call to “Take the light of Christ into the world,” the Acolytes carry the flame out of the Sanctuary. At the beginning of the hymn, children attending CrossRoads: Education for the Journey will be met in the Narthex.)

Sharing their Faith Stories this morning are (in alphabetical order): Charlie Almoney, Zach Brennaman, Alex House, Valerie Kronson, Agatha Shafer, and Kelsey Wolf.

2018-2019 Youth Advisors are: Ann Bailey, Graham Bailey, Laura Bascom, Sean Hearrell, Shawna Kidd, Margaux Mayhew, Vail McGuire, Gene Saunders, Sarah Saunders, Sarah Sessions, Joseph Shonle, and Sandra Swanson.

Each year the Presbyterian Youth Council (PYC), a ministry team of the Education and Practice Committee made up of youth and adults, chooses a theme of study and reflection for the youth fellowship group. This year’s theme was Peers From The Past. The group studied stories of young people in scripture. Members of the Senior High Youth Fellowship wrote the liturgy for this morning’s service.

Music Participants: Knox Ringers (grades 7-12; Brent Manley, Director) – Knox Choir (grades 7-12; John Neely, Director; Brent Manley, Pianist) – John Neely is Organist-Director.

Today’s Music: “Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak” (Hymn 426) is based on Romans 14:7: “We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves.” The hymn is a fitting commentary on the life of the author, Frances R. Havergal, whose delicate health forced her to conserve her energies and restrict her activities. It is a reminder that it is our duty to use the talent God gives us to share with others, pray-ing that God will strengthen, teach, fill, and use us according to God’s will for our lives.

Lives of Love and Service

It’s long been known that we support what we love… with our time, with our talent, and with our treasure.

That was certainly true in the Clute family. David and Miriam (Mim) Clute moved to Dayton at the end of World War II and connected quickly with Westminster Presbyteri-an Church. David and Mim treasured their times with what were then called the Beta Presbyweds and travelled on mission trips to Alaska and San Francisco with other Be-tas. Those friendships were a significant piece of their very active lives. They raised their children, three boys and a girl, in church school, choir, and confirmation class.

Deeply interested in peace and justice, Mim volunteered many hours with Westminster Presbyterian Women and continued her interest at the national level with Presbyterian Women conferences. Westminster was the center of both her spiritual life and her deepest friendships.

Dave, an engineer at WPAFB, was a bit quieter in giving back to the church. The Beta Presbygroup was equally important to Dave and, following retirement, he and a fellow Beta went downtown daily to work on projects and missions at their beloved Westminster. Together they traced all of the electrical circuits in the church, labeling every connection in all seven circuit boxes. They built cupboards, repaired “tired” areas, and performed feats of carpentry wonder all over the building. They even had daughter Karen, slight of frame, crawl through the plenum under the Sanctuary and above Fellowship Hall to trace a wire’s path above a hallway to an outlet in a storage closet in Stargazer Square.

Karen Clute grew up knowing how important the church family was to her parents. She followed in their footsteps. Returning to Dayton as a young adult in 1986, she taught mostly 4th graders in the Miamisburg schools for 30 years. She served the church as a Deacon and an Elder, but her pas-sions follow her parents’ passions. Like her dad, she main-tains a laser focus on the integrity of the building. She smiles every time she opens a circuit box and sees her dad’s labels from 25 years ago. She took her mother’s love of working

Page 11: WEB-2019-05-05 YOUTH SUNDAYwestminsterdayton.org/Youth Sunday/Youth_Sunday_2019... · 2019-05-03 · *GLORIA PATRI H. W. Greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the

within the church to heart when she worked as a youth advisor and, today, she leads her Filia Presby-group.

For Karen, the light blazed in 1989 when a church member spoke from the lecturn asking for volunteers to become involved in Habitat for Humanity. She jumped in and has been involved in Catch the Building Spirit ever since. At Nancy Hodgkins’ suggestion, she combined the opportunity to serve and the opportuni-ty to teach. She shares her skills as a leader of our In-tergenerational Mission trips for WPC.

Karen also followed in her parents’ footsteps by designating Westminster Presbyterian Church in her legacy planning. “The church is very important to me. It’s my faith; it’s my family; it’s the people who encourage and support me. Westminster is a spiritual place to grow and to feel safe. Every faith journey has its ups and downs. At Westmin-ster, I don’t always have to be up but I’m always safe in my journey.”

Thank you, Karen…for your faith story, for your service, and for your love of our shared worship experience.

Karen is a member of our Te Deum Society which means she has informed the church that she has included Westminster Presbyterian in her legacy planning. For more information on how to let the church know that you’ve included WPC in your estate planning, please call Craig in the Church Office (937-223-7285). Let us thank you today for a gift we hope doesn’t come to us for many, many years.

Lunch with Richard. For several months now, twice a month Richard Baker has been sharing an informal lunch with members of the Westminster Congregation. It’s a little bit of a vision sharing occasion and a great deal about getting to know our members outside of worship or church business. These small, Dutch-treat lunches last about 90 minutes and are generally sched-uled at a restaurant in the downtown Dayton area. Upcoming dates are May 8 (12:00 p.m.) and May 30 (6:00 p.m.). Please call Amanda in the Church Office to RSVP for the date of your choice. All are welcome.

Parking: The lot on the corner of Second and Perry Streets is owned by Montgomery County. The county, at its discretion, opens it for us as a courtesy. However, this is not a guaranteed arrangement, and we have no recourse when it is closed.

Large print bulletins, hymnals, Bibles, and sermons are available in the Narthex, from an usher, or on the table by the elevator.

During the service, if you notice someone who appears to require medical attention, please raise your hand or contact the head usher. Response Team members will care for the person.

If someone asks you for money, we encourage you instead to give them one of Westminster’s Emergency Assistance Cards, which are available in the Narthex or the Church Office.

Each week the churches of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley keep one particular congregation in their prayers. This week the churches are praying for Seven Mile United Presbyterian Church.

Need to speak with a pastor after worship? Here is where you can find them: Richard – Narthex; Nancy – Narthex.

During the offertory, we hope you will take the opportunity to provide your name and contact information on the Fellowship Pad when it gets passed to you in the pew. After the service today, please stop by our “Welcome Center” just out-side the Sanctuary’s double doors. We have a small gift for you today to say, “Thanks for being here today” and for adding to our worshiping community.

ADULT EDUCATION

The Following Classes Continue Today

Marriage in Different Seasons of Life—Taught by Ray and Sue Merz. Each season of married life brings new issues to the forefront, and how we address those issues in faith determines whether our marriage thrives or slowly stagnates, or perpetual conflict leads to a dead-end. After Ray's 7 years of a failed marriage, and now our soon-to-be 48 years of a healthy marriage, we are convinced that the church needs to do more to strength-en marriage. Ray and Sue Merz will interview two Westminster couples each week and talk about their marriage. We look at raising young children (April 28), raising youth (May 5), empty nesters (May 12), and ad-vancing seniors (May 19). Come join us these four weeks as we look at "Marriage in Different Seasons of Life."

God’s Sent People: Who Are We and What Are We Doing Here?—Taught by Margaret Haney, Ruling El-der; retired Executive Presbyter of Miami Valley Pres-bytery; PCUSA Life Coach for church professionals; and seeker of faithful living in community. As people of the Reformed tradition, we believe in the concept of “the priesthood of all believers”—that all of us are called to ministry by our baptism. In this class, we will be ad-dressing the questions: What is my call to serving God’s world? How do I know that is my call? What does that mean for me in my everyday life—at work, in my com-munity, in my family—and in relation to the Church? Come and reflect on these questions through the eyes of the Scriptures and through the sharing of understand-ings with other members of the class.

Westminster Prayer Ministry To ask for prayer, fill out the Prayer Request card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or take it to the Church Office. Requests for prayer received are shared with the Westminster E-mail Prayer Ministry Team and remain confidential. Please secure permission before sharing an individual’s name, or use generic words such as friend, parent, child, or spouse. Requests for prayer can also be emailed to [email protected]. You may also submit your prayer request on the Quick Links section of our website (www.westminsterdayton.org). To join the Westminster Prayer Ministry Team, please e-mail [email protected].

Add your prayer to our Prayer Wall, located in the Sanctuary near the Chancel on the east wall. You will find blank prayer papers and pencils in the four mini-desks built into the wall. Write your prayer on the paper, roll up the paper, and insert it between the bricks of the wall. These prayers are completely private, between you and God. After the first Sunday of each month, the wall will be cleared and all prayer papers will be respectfully burned. Prayer Wall postcards are now available to send to someone for whom you prayed. They are located in the Prayer Wall mini-desks and the Narthex.

I will call upon you, O Lord; come quickly to me: give ear to my voice when I call to you. Let my prayer be counted as incense before you. Psalm 141:1-2a.
