Weathering, Erosion, & Deposition Flipbook: Cut out each piece on the two pages and staple together to form a flipbook. Use the information provided in the book to answer the questions on the last page.

Earth’s land is constantly changing. Wind and water are two things that contribute to most of the changes in land.

Weathering is the wearing away or slow breaking apart of rock into smaller pieces. Plant roots, ice, wind, and water are all causes of weathering.

Moving water in rivers cause rocks to rub together. Over time, these rocks get smaller and smoother.

Plant roots growing in rocks can cause them to split.

-Wind blowing rocks and water freezing in rocks both cause erosion too.

Deposition

Deposition is the dropping of sediment by wind, water, ice, or gravity. Sediment is created through the process of weathering, carried away through the process of erosion, and then dropped in a new location through the process of deposition. When wind and water slow down, they drop the sediments they are carrying.

Effects of Deposition:

Directions: Use your flipbook to answer the following questions.

1. What three processes work together to cause changes to Earth’s land? _______________________________________________________

2. ____________ is the movement of sediment form one place to another.

3. What are the four things that cause weathering? ___________________ _______________________________________________________ 4. _______________ is the dropping of sediment by wind, water, ice, or

gravity.

5. What is a glacier? ___________________________________________ ________________________________________________________

6. Moving water can cause ____________________ to form. 7. _______________ is the wearing away or slow breaking apart of rock into

smaller pieces.

Erosion

Erosion is the movement of sediment from one place to another. Again, wind and water (moving water or ice) are the primary causes of erosion.

Causes of Erosion: *Moving Water Causes deep canyons to form. The Grand Canyon is a great example of this

*Waves crashing causes shorelines to change

Wind carries sand and soil and can change the shape of rocks. Gravity makes soils and rocks move downhill Glacier a large mass of slow-moving ice that flows down a slope. It pushes rocks and soil as it moves.

canyon

Deltas *large masses of deposited sediment at the mouth of a river.

Sand Dunes *large piles of sand along the coastline
