He has always been a man of few words who didn’t initiate much on his own, so I stepped up to bat and did everything. I took over all aspects of our married life — from bill paying to home mainte- nance to romance. He would tell me how grateful he was to me for doing it. His adult daughters from a previous marriage have always been cold to me, and I recently found out why. It turns out Roman made up horrible, untrue stories behind my back. He painted himself as the vic- tim of abuse! His daughters staged an “intervention” to save their dad, and Roman went along with them. He cleared out our bank ac- counts, hid money and as- sets and filed for divorce. I was stunned. Abby, he went along with the charade for a week — until his guilt got the better of him, and he ad- mitted he had made it all up. He claims he doesn’t want to divorce me after all. He said he made up the stories to get his daughters’ attention. Roman and I are now going through counseling, and I am assuming respon- sibility for my part in this mess. He harbors strong re- sentment toward me and resorted to passive-aggres- sive revenge. We’re both doing our best to establish forthright, honest and open lines of communication. e problem is his daughters still believe the lies. ey hate me and won’t speak to their father unless he divorces me. I’m not sure what to do. Roman has lost his family and he may lose me, too. e dam- age is so widespread I don’t know what can be re- gained. Have you any ad- vice for me? — Older, wiser and heartbroken DEAR OLDER, WISER AND HEARTBROKEN: Your letter made me furi- ous. It proves that with your husband no good deed goes unpunished. Had you not taken on the functions your husband avoided, your credit would be shot, your house would be a wreck and your sex life nonexistent. And for this your husband slandered you? at he would lie to his daughters about you is dis- gusting. at he then made a money grab and hid as- sets is appalling. What have you to gain from continu- ing this marriage? If I were you, I’d contact a divorce lawyer AND a forensic ac- countant, divide the assets and let the daughters take care of their ingrate of a fa- ther. DEAR ABBY: My hus- band and I belong to a sup- per club comprised of four couples. We have enjoyed our monthly gatherings for years and have developed a strong bond with each cou- ple. As a rule, each one takes turns hosting the event in their home. e re- cent behavior of one host- ess has us baffled. For starters, “Lynn” sometimes seats herself and her husband at a sepa- rate table, even though there’s room at the main table. She also involves her- self with activities I con- sider rude — taking calls on her cell, perusing Face- book, doing paperwork. It’s beginning to feel as though we are an obligation rather than wanted guests. Members of our group have been hesitant to dis- cuss this with her because we don’t want to create tension in the group we have come to hold dear. Any suggestions? — Get- ting served a cold dish DEAR GETTING SERVED: It appears there is already tension in the group you have come to hold dear. For a host to be- have the way Lynn has is rude. Whoever in the group is closest to Lynn should have a chat with her about it — preferably face-to-face — and ask her to explain. It’s possible that the re- sponsibility of hosting has become too much for her. Dear Abby is written by Abi- gail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby at www.Dear- Abby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069. What teens need to know about sex, drugs, AIDS and get- ting along with peers and parents is in “What Every Teen Should Know.” Send your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Abby, Teen Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, IL 61054- 0447. (Shipping and handling are included in the price.) Bell’s palsy brings fear of stroke DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please give me some information about Bell’s palsy? My daughter is 51 years old, and this is the third time she has had it. She had it at ages 2 and 17. She thinks she looks like a monster, as she has no movement on the left side of her face. — E.B. ANSWER: Bell’s palsy is a paralysis of muscles on one side of the face. Al- most always, an affected person, upon looking in a mirror, believes he or she has suffered a stroke. The eyelids on the para- lyzed side can’t close. The mouth is drawn to the un- paralyzed side, producing a somewhat grotesque ap- pearance. Food and drink dribble from the mouth on the paralyzed side. Tastes sensation often is dulled. The eye with the involved lid dries due to decreased tear production. Sounds are heard louder than they actually are. All of this comes about because of inflammation of the facial nerve, the nerve that serves facial muscles and taste sensa- tion. The inflammation is believed to be caused by a virus or by a misdirected attack on the facial nerve by the immune system. A second recurrence, often years later, happens to about 7 percent of pa- tients; a third to about 3 percent; and a fourth to 1.5 percent. Your daughter’s chance of another episode is quite slight. She’s al- ready had more than her share. On the upbeat side, about 80 percent of people will make a substantial re- covery in a few weeks to a month. Some are left with a lingering weakness of those muscles and must enter a rehab program. Treatment is a bit con- troversial. Some doctors prescribe one of the corti- sone drugs early in the course of the illness. The affected eye has to be pro- tected with a patch at night or with paper tape to keep the lid closed. Artificial tears are needed during the day. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You have left the bowel- problem people down. Please answer. Does barometric pres- sure have any effect on bowel movements? Does a person have to go every day? If I drink water, then I have to get up at night. How much water should I drink? All tests show I have cysts in my kidneys. What does that mean? My brain scan shows I had a slight stroke. What’s that indi- cate? Please answer. I am 84 years old. — Anon. ANSWER: I have never read or heard that baro- metric pressure has any ef- fect on bowel movements. You do not have to have a bowel movement daily. Three movements in one week are sufficient. More important than frequency is the consistency of the movement. Rock-hard stools indicate a lack of fiber and fluid. You should drink enough water that the color of your urine is pale yellow or it has no color. Kidney cysts are not al- ways troublemakers. Their size and their number might interfere with kidney function. No doctor in your 84 years has said they are causing trouble. I take that to mean they are not. Brain scans often show evidence of a small stroke, usually not indicating any serious problem. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. He said, “You have no idea what I spend a month on the throwaways.” Now, when we get home, the food goes right into the refrigerator. It keeps much better and can go in the mi- crowave to reheat. Do you think he should offer a 2 percent discount to customers who bring their own containers? — Rich A., Roswell, N.M. DEAR RICH: Great recy- cling hint! I’m not sure about a discount, but why not ask? At the very mini- mum, you are still doing a “green”‘ hint that is helpful! DEAR HELOISE: Having two small children and being a little messy myself, I have taught myself an in- valuable trick when it comes to stain removal: the “jet” setting on your shower head! e high pressure forces the stain out, which is something your washing machine will never do. And of course, don’t forget: e sooner you treat a stain, the better! — Melissa in King- wood, Texas DEAR HELOISE: Almost all luggage ends up on the airport carousal upside- down and wheels first. I be- lieve this is done to keep the wheels and handles from getting caught on the con- veyor. Your luggage will be easy to find if you put your initials on the bottom and the back of your suitcase with a white marker or crayon. — Sterling in Cali- fornia DEAR HELOISE: For me, there is nothing better than a big mug of steaming-hot tea. When we travel by car, I carry a selection of tea bags. At convenience stores, my husband fills his mug with coffee, and I add a tea bag to my mug and fill it with hot water. After a number of unsat- isfactory ideas for ways to dispose of the used tea bags, I finally found the answer! I put the hot, wet tea bag on a paper napkin in a plastic container from margarine and put the top on. At the next stop, I just drop the tea bag and napkin into the trash, put in a new napkin, and I’m ready for the next used tea bag. — Carolyn S., Spearfish, S.D.
