GHULAM MUHAMMAD/ IRFAN AMIN MALIK Sopore/Pulwama, Mar 3: Clashes erupted in various areas of old Srinagar, south Kashmir’s Pulwama district and north Kashmir’s Sopore town after Friday congrega- tional prayers with govern- ment forces resorting to firing of tear smoke shells to disperse the protestors. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leaders and activists staged a silent sit in at Bud- shah Chowk after which gov- ernment forces swung into action and detained many JKLF activists. Senior Hur- riyat leader, Shabir Ahmed Shah, was detained after he managed to reach Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district to meet the family members of Hizbul Mujahi- deen commander Burhan Wani, who was killed in July last year in south Kashmir’s Bemdora village near Kokernag. His killing had trigged massive protest across Kashmir, which led to the 5-month unrest in the Valley. More than 95 youth fell to the bullets of the government forces, while hundreds of protesters sus- tained injuries and many lost their eyesight due the pellets fired by the govern- ment forces. Witnesses said that soon after the Friday congrega- tional prayers culminated at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city, scores of youth took to the streets at Nowhatta chowk amid pro-freedom slogans follow- ing which gov- ernment forces swung into action and fired dozens of tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. The protesting youth, however, refused to split and instead intensified the hurling of stones and bricks at the forces. Wit- nesses said that at Rajouri Kadal, forces fired few shots in air to disperse the pro- testors. Clashes were going on in various old city areas till late in the evening. In civil lines, JKLF lead- ers and activists staged a silent sit in against the Zakura and Batamaloo mas- sacres of 1990. According to a JKLF spokesman, Front leaders and activists along with many others marched from Madina Chowk towards Budshah Chowk but as soon as they reached near Bud- shah Chowk police blocked the road going towards Lal Chowk. “Police swung into action and used force to arrest them. JKLF vice-chair- man Showkat Ahmad Bakh- shi and Muhammad Aslam Sheikh were injured due to police highhandedness,” the Front spokesman alleged. It is worth to mention that besides JKLF leaders and activists, senior resistance leader Mukhtar Ahmad Sofi, Hurriyat (G) activists Muhammad Ramzan Khan and Gazi Javed Baba also participated in today’s pro- test program. Meanwhile, Ratnipora shuts against arrest SHOWKAT DAR Ratnipora (Pulwama), Mar 3: This south Kash- mir village observed a complete shutdown on Friday against the arrest of 19 youth during noc- turnal raids by forces. Locals alleged that forces raided dozens of villages during night and picked up youth without having any proof of their involvement in the stone pelting. All the shops were closed and traffic remained off the roads. “All of them (arrested youth) were involved in stone pelting during MoS Zahoor Mir’s visit to the village” a police officer said. “Four more youth have been arrested from Kakapora in militancy related cases,” he added. Reports said that five other youth were arrested in Drabgam and Gulshabad villages A youth takes on policemen during clashes in Srinagar's old city on Friday. Aman Farooq/GK the JKLF spokesman said that among those arrested include Professor Javed, Muhammad Aslam Sheikh and Muham- mad Irfan Khan. “Police even didn’t even spare a specially- abled person Imtiyaz Ahmad Parray and arrested him too. The JKLF activists were shift- ed to Central Jail Srinagar,” he said. Reports about clashes also poured in from Sopore area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Soon after Friday con- gregational prayers, hundreds of youth assembled near Jamia Masjid area of the town and started raising pro-freedom slogans and also demanding the immediate release of youth arrested during last year’s unrest. “Forces retaliated by lobbing tear smoke canisters to disperse the agitated youth which resulted in the clashes between the protesters and the government forces,” witnesses said. Clashes also broke out in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district against the detention of youth. SHABIR SHAH REACHES TRAL, DETAINED Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman and senior Hurriyat (G) leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was on Friday arrested in south Kashmir’s Tral sub-district while he was on his way to meet the father of Burhan Wani. Shah had left Srinagar late Thursday night to reach Tral. He was arrested by a police party at Akmal School Tral and was later shifted to police station Awa- ntipora, said a police official. “Shah was to visit Khanqah-e- Faiz Panah to offer congrega- tional Friday prayers and hold a pro-freedom rally there,” his party sources said. It was his first visit to Tral town since the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani. URI ATTACK NIA founds no evidence against 2 PaK boys To be released next week Cops thrash GK lensman Pulwama, Mar 3: The Greater Kashmir lensman, Kamran Yusuf, was beaten by the force personnel here in south Kashmir on Friday. “As the clashes erupted in the town I rushed to the spot to cover the incident. However, policemen present there pounced on me and beat me. They threatened to break my camera. Somehow I regained my composure and managed to escape from the spot,” Kamran said. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Pulwama, Rayees Bhat described the incident as “unfortunate” and said that he is inquiring about the maer. SHABIR IBN YUSUF Srinagar, Mar 3: Finally the two Pakistani boys arrested on September 18 last year, three days after the attack on Uri-Baramulla Infantry Brigade headquar- ter in north Kashmir, would be released by National Investigation Agency (NIA), next week as elite probe agency has found nothing against them, sources told Greater Kashmir on Friday. They said, “After the attack on 12 Infantry Bri- gade Headquarters of Army by the militants, 18 soldiers were killed. After three days the Army claimed that it nabbed Faisal Hussain Awan and Ahsan Khursheed, stated to be two school friends for allegedly guiding the mili- tants to the 12 Infantry Bri- gade headquarters.” Khursheed hails from Khaliana Kalan and Awan from Pottha Jahangir. The villages are stated to be in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaK) and close to the Line of Control. The investigations into attack were transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The case was first registered at Police Sta- tion Uri vide FIR No 71/16 and was later transferred to the NIA. That (Uri attack) was the first investigation into a militant attack in Kashmir to be carried out by the national-level anti-ter- ror agency. Earlier, the NIA had investigated an attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy in Udhampur area of Jammu last year. Besides, taking DNA sam- ples of slain militants, NIA has also seized the arms and ammunition, two mobile handsets and two GPS sets recovered from the site of the incident. After their arrest the Army had said the two were working for the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and guiding militants to cross the Line of Control (LoC). They were first caught by a patrol team of the BSF in a village near Uri and then handed over to the Army. “There are cent percent chances that both boys will be released next week,” a senior NIA official monitor- ing developments told Great- er Kashmir. “Nothing of that sort was found against them.” The senior NIA official said that probe agency won’t be filing any charge sheet in court. “They are not accused now. So there will be no charge sheet,” he said adding that their release is being finalized. “We are on that.” However, it is not clear yet whether boys would be handed over Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi or would be sent back through Kaman post. The decision of their release is said to be as goodwill gesture as Pakistan last Saturday released two Indian boys after remaining in their custody for quite some time. Earlier, a month ago Pakistan had handed over a mentally deranged Bengali woman to Army and Police in Uri Sector of Baramulla district.
