Global Outreach Profile

Arab Baptist Theological SeminaryLebanon (Middle East)

For more info: www.abtslebanon.org

Elie Haddad, president of the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary of Beirut, Lebanon, will be participating in our services. He will also speak in the EC Board Room at 10 a.m. and in EC-23/24 at 11:20 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. ABTS is a Global Outreach ministry partner of EFCC.

In 2010, ABTS celebrated 50 years of preparing leaders for the church throughout the Arab world. Since its inception in 1960 in Beirut, the seminary has graduated several hundred students from Algeria, Egypt, India, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia. More than 300 others have benefited from short-term and other non-degree programs. The great majority of these graduates are now actively engaged in ministry in the Arabic-speaking world.

ABTS offers both formal degrees or certificate-based education, as well as less formal training opportunities. Instruction is in Arabic and is contextualized to meet the needs of the Arab world. The seminary emphasizes the development of personal spirituality, effective ministry to the majority Arab religious community, knowledge of the history and particularities of Christian minorities in the Arab world, and sensitivity to special areas of Eastern spirituality.

The vision and mission of this seminary is to see God glorified, people reconciled and communities restored in the Arab world as Christ is acknowledged as Lord. The seminary seeks to accomplish this by serving the church in this region as it realizes its Biblical mission by offering specialized learning resources and equipping faithful men and women for effective service.

Prayer Requests

• The situation in Lebanon and Syria. This conflict is causing a major humanitarian crisis. Refugees in Lebanon today constitute more than 20% of the population.

• For the churches to be able to cope as they care for the needy, both spiritually and physically.

• For churches as their role is changing as the political climate changes; that God will guide them into effective ministry despite the difficulties.

• For the safety and bold witness of the students who come from all over the Arab world (Middle East and North Africa) as they return to their communities to serve God in sometimes very difficult circumstances.

1. Share briefly about a scenario that might cause you to be — or share about a time when you were — skeptical of God’s love and care for you. Can you relate to the woman’s comment in the opening story that, “If this is some twisted test of my faith, I admit that I (have) failed.” How so?

Read Malachi 1:2-5

Please watch the small group video blog (www.efcc.org/skeptical-about-Gods-love) and review your outline.

G r o w

2. As you listened to the sermon and the video blog, what do you understand to be the major issues going on inside the hearts of the Israelites at this time? Do you see other things that maybe weren’t pointed out? What might those be?

3. In what ways can you relate to the issues with which they struggled? (Think especially about Dennis’ comments and challenges in the blog.)

S h a r e

4. Is there one area where you are personally “going through the motions” that you sense God wants to work on with you this week? Share that as a prayer request.

Malachi S .O .A .P . DevotionalHow to Use S.O.A.P. Devotional

S.O.A.P. stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer.

SCRIPTURE: Start each day by reading the assigned passage, expecting to hear from God. Read slowly, noticing key people and places. Think about what the people in the text were experiencing. Consider rewriting the passage in your own words and jot down any verse that stands out to you. Remember, the Bible is about your love relationship with Him. So as you read, open your heart and mind to draw close to the Lord, asking Him to deepen your heart’s connection to Him.

OBSERVATION: In this section write down observations about the verses you have just read. Focus on answering the questions, “What does this passage actually say?” and “What does it mean?” Define key terms, check another translation and make sure you notice the context of the passage you are reading. Then try to summarize the passage in your own words.

APPLICATION: Next ask, “Lord what are you saying to me through this text of Scripture?” Write down how you think this passage relates to you right now, as well as anything specific with which you identify.

PRAYER: During this last portion of your time, interact with God’s Word through prayer. Respond to the passage with prayers of adoration, confession, renewal, petition, intercession, affirmation, or thanksgiving. As the Lord speaks to you through the text, respond to Him in prayer.

Our hope in providing this S.O.A.P. companion to the Malachi series is that you will grow deeper in your relationship with the Lord. If you miss a day, don’t sweat it; just pick up where you left off and enjoy entering into the presence of God.
