Financial summary and balance sheetOur annual financial update

Yorkshire Energy Partnership is an independent, not-for-profit company working towards a sustainable future. We support local people, communities, businesses, local authorities and other partners to live and work with sustainability in mind, saving both environmental and financial costs.

We deliver award-winning and innovative projects on a local and regional level – achieving carbon reduction, streamlining business waste processes and saving energy and money.

Our VisionOur region as a leading example of a sustainable and thriving low-carbon economy in a modern world.

Our MissionDedicated to working with businesses, communities and individuals to help them live and work more sustainably.

Our ReasonsThe way we all work and live is unsustainable and the world’s natural resources are depleting with every year that passes. We believe it is possible to promote and support sustainable living – making sure that it is entrenched in policies and plans across Yorkshire. We are working to make Yorkshire a recognisable blueprint of excellence; a region which raises expectations about carbon reduction and energy-saving.

It’s a great pleasure to celebrate twenty years of inspirational and results-driven work from the Yorkshire Energy Partnership team, with the launch of our first Annual Report.

In my time as Chair of the Board, I have witnessed the YEP team strengthen and diversify, with projects becoming even more successful and setting a benchmark which other regions are working to achieve.

We continue to be the driving force behind much of the sustainable work in Yorkshire – delivering quality results and addressing issues such as fuel poverty, renewable energy, community work and business resource efficiency.

As we celebrate our twentieth birthday, our outlook is healthier than ever before. Our sphere of influence is growing with each year and we are uniquely placed to offer sustainable solutions and environmental insight.

A fantastic performance from all our staff, supporters, and partners – the future is bright for Yorkshire Energy Partnership.

This Annual Report marks a special celebration – Yorkshire Energy Partnership is now twenty years old. From humble beginnings as the Ryedale Energy Conservation Group with only five staff, and then North Yorkshire-wide ‘Sustainability 4 Yorkshire’, through to our current incarnation as the Yorkshire Energy Partnership, we have worked with a huge range of partners, local authorities and leading environmental specialists to improve the sustainability of our region.

In 2013 alone we have insulated over a thousand properties, helping people to escape the trap of fuel poverty, visited over 40 schools and children’s centres to help them achieve better energy efficiency, referred almost 300 people via our Hotspots scheme and signed up more than 20 new businesses to our new Investors in the Environment scheme. And we’re showing no signs of slowing down.

As you’ll see from reading through these pages, we have come far in twenty years and we have much to celebrate, but there’s so much more we can do to make Yorkshire the beacon of sustainable excellence we are aiming for. We are a forward thinking, unique organisation with many talents and we plan to use these to great effect over the next twenty years and beyond.

Finally, a huge thank you to all our partners who have supported us throughout our two decades in business and our dedicated and knowledgeable team – without your exemplary efforts, none of our work is possible.

This year Yorkshire Energy Partnership turns twenty. We are really proud of the projects we have launched and managed. Here are just a few of our successes:

Generated 3m of investment into energy

conservation

Green Neighbourhood ChallengeOur Green Neighbourhood Challenge was a project which aimed to educate, excite and inspire people to live and work more sustainably. The aim of the project was to reduce CO2 emissions by 11%, in line with Government targets, and build sustainable communities throughout North Yorkshire. However some communities exceeded this target achieving up to 12% reductions

Through our work with seven ‘Neighbourhood Teams’ we helped stimulate discussion, debate and action amongst other local communities. The outcome was the realisation that we could all make small changes to the way we use the planet’s resources, working to ensure a better quality of life for everyone – both now and in the future.

The Green Neighbourhood Challenge now serves as a blueprint for other communities to develop their own ideas, make greener lifestyle choices and promote sustainability across North Yorkshire.

Wrapping up YorkshireOur ‘Wrapping up Yorkshire’ scheme was launched in a bid to tackle fuel poverty and keep the cold at bay during the cooler months as well as help residents save up to £310 per year on their fuel bills.

Thousands of regional householders were granted free loft and cavity wall insulation in their homes, and the scheme was open to all private home owners including landlords.

The scheme proved a huge success; by offering free insulation we hope to have improved the health of those most susceptible to illnesses as a result of cold homes.

We could all make small changes to the way we use the planet’s resources.

We’ve given away 3060 energy saving bulbs,

saving a collective 19,000

We’ve insulated over 20,000 lofts and cavities, saving a whopping

400 tonnes of carbon!

Shortly after, we won the contract to run the regional Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre and increased our remit to include sustainable transport. Our driving simulator was a popular tool to help drivers to learn about saving fuel and money.

During our time as the EEAC and Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre (ESTac) we facilitated:

• 14,000 home surveys

• 11,500 energy-saving installations

• Generated £3m of investment into energy conservation.

Our Advice CentreThe Advice Centre is our longest running project which has adapted to the needs of customers over the past twenty years.

Launched initially as the Energy Efficiency Advice Centre (EEAC) for York, North Yorkshire and East Riding, we achieved an excellent record for customer contact and carbon savings, ranking in the top ten of advice centres by the Energy Saving Trust 2007 satisfaction survey.

We are a unique team; our sole aim is to support homeowners to improve living conditions and save money. We get some great feedback from our customers who, without us, may be heading into a downward spiral of fuel poverty.

What we do best: An overview of our current projects

YEP in the community

Oil ClubsOil clubs in rural communities have multiple benefits, not least of which is collective money saving. Setting up an oil club takes some work but the benefits are felt for years. Our project has already resulted in 10% savings in fuel bills for residents and we’re expanding into Richmondshire, Ryedale and Scarborough.

To find out more or to ask for advice, call us on 01904 545 020.

The Local Oil Club is a great success and brings our village financial benefits. I wish to express gratitude to those who volunteer to make the scheme so successful.

Businesses save money immediately through energy efficiency and they receive the official green stamp of approval – along with many other resources and tools.

Laura Backhouse, iiE Project Co-ordinator

Our Investors in the Environment (iiE) scheme is currently helping businesses across Yorkshire and the Humber to reduce their environmental impact, save money and attract new customers through promoting their ‘green’ credentials.

It might be our newest project, but it has quickly become our most popular, with 45 members signing up since last year’s launch – and nearly 300 businesses pledging to begin making environmental improvements within their organisation.

YEP - We mean business!

We have been working closely with regional businesses right from the beginning, firstly through our Business Environment Forum, then through the Green Business Club and, nowadays, through our accredited environmental management system, Investors in the Environment.

Our work has always centred on saving businesses money, reducing waste and attracting new customers. We have offered advice and support to thousands of local businesses, carrying out environmental audits, running staff seminars and working in partnership with other organisations such as Yorkshire Forward, the Environment Agency, Envirowise, the Carbon Trust and local authorities.

iiE is a not-for-profit environmental scheme which rewards hard work with an official accreditation that doesn’t ‘cost the earth’. It’s popular because it’s quick and simple to implement, with three levels of accreditation and support from an account manager every step of the way.

It is the only scheme of its kind running in Yorkshire and offers something to suit every business.

Would you like to join the scheme, save money and equip your business with a recognised accreditation?

Nowadays, although our national EST funding has ceased, our dedicated team continues to support homeowners and those in danger of fuel poverty to reduce their energy bills and take steps which will make their homes more comfortable – through installing insulation, renewable technology or simply improving energy efficiency.

Call us on 01904 545 020. Our customer helpline is open from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm for all your questions about how to keep energy bills down and improve energy efficiency. Or you can visit www.yorkshireenergypartnership.org.uk to apply for help online.

Our schools insulation programmeThis year our schools project has really made an impact. With over 40 schools now insulated following free surveys, there are still more taking up the service across the whole of North Yorkshire and further afield. Teachers and support staff have already started to notice a difference. We support schools to insulate their buildings – lowering fuel bills, creating a more comfortable learning environment and demonstrating a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Yorkshire Energy Partnership supervises the entire process, from arranging free no obligation surveys and sending quotes, to following up with final quality checks.

Denise has worked at Yorkshire Energy Partnership since 1998 and has contributed to many of YEP’s projects – from inception through to delivery. Much of Denise’s involvement has been through our community outreach work – using road shows, events and workshops to engage and inform residents about ways to save money and live more sustainably. Here we ask Denise a bit about her experience of working with YEP over the last 15 years and what projects she feels have been our most successful.

What do you think are the most important ways we can improve sustainability in our region?

“We know that one model does not fit all – people are different, homes are different and even communities have different agendas. The new ECO scheme has been brilliant for insulating properties where it wasn’t possible before – and it is great that some people can benefit from new boilers, but I still feel that renewables have a larger part to play in the future.”

What have been your highlights of working at YEP?

“There have been so many. From organising renewable technology showcases around the region and advising customers on the Rip Off

Britain programme, to giving away 3060 energy saving bulbs as part of City of York Council’s Lightbulb Project, saving a collective £19,000. I am also really fortunate to be part of a strong, friendly team – upon arriving at the office on my 50th birthday, they had stuck a large picture of superwoman above my desk! I’ve also recently taken up photography and we now have a mini-gallery of my work in the office.”

Which project are you most proud of delivering?

“Easy – the York and North Yorkshire Green Neighbourhood Challenge. It was a great example of making changes on a local level and my most rewarding work to date. You can read more about the project on page 5”.

If you were to sum up YEP, which words would you use?

“Partnerships, dedicated, hardworking and successful!”

With Feed in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive providing long term support for those installing their own energy generation technologies, YEP will be helping individuals, communities and businesses to make the best choices and secure the best installers. Of course, over the next 20 years the technologies will keep improving and the costs will hopefully keep falling, making the vision of energy self-sufficient homes a truly realistic one.

Householders must still be supported to heat their homes and live comfortably

YEP will be looking to undertake more detailed research about how we all use energy with partners from the world of academia. This will include looking at transport and opportunities for developing low carbon infrastructures as well as encouraging a modal shift to more sustainable forms of transport.

It is not only the centres of learning that YEP will be looking to create links with over the coming years; we will also seek to work with more partners in the commercial sector, local authorities and local communities. Our Investors in the Environment scheme for businesses will continue to expand within North Yorkshire and we will be looking to move into other parts of the UK – as will many of our other projects.

In the year 2033 YEP will still be North Yorkshire’s leading energy partnership, offering an increased range of services to our local authorities, businesses, communities and residents. The bulk of activity will have moved from insulation to micro generation and low carbon living. However we will still be focussing on helping the most vulnerable in our community to ensure they can afford to heat their homes and live comfortably.

For YEP this means only one thing – we must keep helping households and businesses to improve efficiency and generate their own renewable energy.

As always, insulating your property is the vital first step. Although YEP has insulated thousands of cavities and lofts over the last two decades there are still plenty more to do; those that were insulated in the 1980’s and 90’s will need revisiting, as products wear out and building regulation standards increase. Certainly, over the next few years YEP will also be concentrating on tackling those hard to treat properties with solid walls using the Energy Company Obligation scheme to provide funding.

Where are we going now? Our future and where we see ourselves in the next twenty years

Gazing into a crystal ball to identify exactly what Yorkshire Energy Partnership will be doing over the next two decades is tricky. Governments and their policies come and go, global affairs can change things almost overnight, but one thing is certain – the cost of energy will keep rising.
