Saint Therese, Flower of fervor and love, please intercede for us.

Fill our hearts with your pure love of God. As we approach and celebrate your feast day,

make us more aware of the goodness of God and how well He tends His garden.

Instill in us your little way of doing ordinary things with extra-ordinary love.

Give us the heart of a child who wonders

at life and embraces everything with loving enthusiasm.

Teach us your delight in God's ways so that divine charity may blossom in our hearts.

Little Flower of Jesus, bring our petitions (mention in silence here) before God, our Father.

With your confidence, we come before Jesus

as God's children, because you are our heavenly friend.

As we celebrate the Feast Day of your homecoming in heaven, continue to

shower roses and grace upon us.

Amen

The Little Flower October 1 is the feast of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (1873-1897) This young adult saint (died at 24) is one of the most well-known and popular saints. She left us much wisdom on everyday spirituality. Her mom died of breast cancer when Therese was only 4 ½. Therese herself knew sickness and hardship. Therese's "little way" of trusting in Jesus to make her holy and relying on small daily sacrifices instead of great deeds appeals to so many Catholics worldwide.

Food Pantry We know that God lives in all our neighbors. As Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:40 “You did it for me”. Through your generosity our parish is able to support the Rose’s Bounty Food Pantry in West Roxbury. Many thanks for providing food for those in need. The spirit in this parish is tremendous.

Our collection is ongoing and donations can be dropped off to the Parish Center. If the office is closed when you arrive, you may drop off the donations at the door. Thank you so very much for making the difference that you do!

ReflectionSeptember is National Recovery Month. We are reminded of those in our communities, in our families and in our homes who are in recovery from addiction and those who are seeking recovery. COVID 19 has made life difficult in many ways. Even if a person doesn’t get the virus, one can be affected psychologically and socially by the necessary coronavirus restrictions and in some cases issues of substance abuse have been exacerbated. Addiction is a disease and recovery typically requires treatment. There are several paths to recovery and the process begins with the hope that change can happen. Massachusetts has a campaign called “My Path My Recovery” The hotline is 800-327-5050 and the website is helplinema.org/learn-more/treatment/recovery/ The Archdiocese of Boston under the leadership of Father Joe White has addiction support services. Check out their website at aarpss.org/ There are links to digital meetings and more. Addiction is a disease that affects the whole family of those with the disease. The Hope and Strength Prayer Group gathers in Sacred Heart Chapel in North Quincy at 7:00 PM the first Tuesday of every month. It is an opportunity for family and friends to pray the rosary for those in recovery. All are welcome. The beautiful second reading this weekend from Philippians reminds us of who Jesus is. Jesus is fully human and fully divine. Jesus understands every human condition and understands the struggle and pain that addiction can bring to those who suffer from the disease and to those who love them. We pray this month in a special way for those who are in recovery. Saint John’s supports several 12 step groups by offering space here but COVID19 has made that impossible for now. We hope that may change in the future. If you call the office we can put you in touch with those who lead AA, Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and Women’s 12 step AA. We ask all of you to add those in recovery to your prayers this week. May the Lord give us the grace to be firm in faith, unwavering in hope and steadfast

Please remember in prayers this week the family of

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

who has recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Feast of Saint Francis & Blessing of the Animals The Catholic Church’s Franciscan order was founded by Saint Francis. He lived in Italy during the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries. He is known for his generosity to the poor and his willingness to minister to the lepers. He is remembered for his love for animals and nature. Saint Francis died at Portiuncula, Italy on October 4, 1226. Pope Gregory IX pronounced St Francis a saint in 1228. The pope also laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. The church is also known as Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi. At Saint John Chrysostom, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis with a blessing of the animals. This year, with COVID we will not have a live blessing of the animals, however, we invite you to send us your pictures. You can mail them, email them or post them on our Facebook page. Fr. Connolly will be doing a blessing of the animals which we will post.

This week we celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Traditionally, as they studied and learned about the Sacrament of Forgiveness, our Reconciliation classes have always adopted Francis as their patron saint. Having been educated by the Franciscan Sisters, I have a long standing affection for this man from Assisi. We often began our classes with a prayer to the saint. Most of us have sung or recited the “Prayer of St Francis”, which was not actually written by Francis. The prayer reflects the way that he lived his life as he tried to follow the Gospel teachings. Francis was bought up in a wealthy family, and he embraced the wild lifestyle of the 1200’s. As a young man, Francis came to realize that this way of living was morally and spiritually wrong. He began to spend more time in prayer. Francis’ conversion and reconciliation was amazing as he joyfully experienced God’s grace. Young Francis renounced all the excesses of his old life and set out with a new vision that focused on concern for the poor and a demand for social justice. Francis’ way of living is perhaps more relevant today than it was more than 800 years ago! He embraced every person as his brother or sister, regardless of how they looked, what they wore, or where they came from. He freely gave his possessions away to those in need. He spoke out against the corruption of the leaders of the church and state. He recognized the interdependence of nature and humans on this earth. In his “Canticle of the Creatures”, he wrote that all of God’s creation gives glory to God by doing what it was created to do. Men and women are true to their calling when they love, forgive and make peace. It seems like such a simple plan to follow, but yet it’s not! So today, as we think about Francis of Assisi, we pray that his spirit will show us the way to live as he did: as peacemakers, as lovers of creation and as followers of Jesus.

If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. - St. Francis of Assisi

As we celebrate the Year of the Eucharist we will offer various opportunities to meditate on the meaning of the Eucharist. We will bring you questions and answers on the Eucharist as published by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Why is the Eucharist not only a meal but also a sacrifice? While our sins would have made it impossible for us to share in the life of God, Jesus Christ was sent to remove this obstacle. His death was a sacrifice for our sins. Christ is "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (Jn 1:29). Through his death and resurrection, he conquered sin and death and reconciled us to God. The Eucharist is the memorial of this sacrifice. The Church gathers to remember and to re-present the sacrifice of Christ in which we share through the action of the priest and the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the celebration of the Eucharist, we are joined to Christ's sacrifice and receive its inexhaustible benefits.

Book Discussion So many priests tirelessly serve the Lord and the people yet there are no American saints who are parish priests. Guess who is on his way to sainthood?: Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890), the son of Irish immigrants, was born in Waterbury, Connecticut and is the founder of the Knights of Columbus (1882). On Wednesday Oct 21 from 7-8 pm on Zoom, there will be a discussion of the book Parish Priest.

In this short but engaging book, you will learn about Father McGivney’s life and what he did to help the poor. He will be beatified October 31. The book can be purchased on Amazon The book, authored by Douglas Brinkley, can be purchased at amazon.com/Parish-Priest-McGivney-American-Catholicism/dp/006077685 To get a Zoom link to participate in the discussion email Mary Campion at [email protected]
