Dear Parishioners, Next Sunday, August 13th our annual celebration in honor of Saint Roque (Rocco) will take
place beginning with Mass at 3:00 PM in the church. Father Jeremy will be the main celebrant
and homilist and all are welcomed to come together and pray through the intercession of Saint Roque for
strength and endurance. Saint Roque born in 1295 in Montpelier, France was miraculously marked from birth with a red cross on his
breast. His devout mother encouraged Saint Roque to a life of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Having
renounced all his possessions at the age of twenty Saint Roque set out as a mendicant pilgrim for Rome and
he dedicated himself to visiting and helping the sick especially during the epidemic of the plague.
Accordingly, when Saint Roque prayed and placed the sign of the cross on people’s foreheads they were
miraculously cured. In time, Saint Roque became ill and retreated to a forest where water from a spring
helped him as well as a dog that brought him bread and licked his wounds, healing him. Returning home to Montpelier Saint Roque was arrested on espionage, put into prison where he languished
for five years until his death on August 16, 1327. Soon afterwards the discovery of the birthmark of a cross
on his body prompted many of the faithful to call for his canonization as saint because of his endurance,
devoutness and holiness. Today, Saint Roque is venerated by many throughout the world including Italy,
Spain, France, the Philippines and others. The remains of Saint Roque were returned to Venice in 1845
where a church and hospital were built in his honor. In anticipation of our parish celebration in honor of this holy and humble saint of God, a Novena to Saint
Roque is prayed daily this week. Please see the Novena schedule on the bulletin board in the church
gathering space and consider being a leader or sponsor for this year’s Novena and celebration. Thank you to the Saint Roque Devotional Group in the parish for helping increase devotion to Saint Roque
and may our prayer next Sunday help many who are ill, imprisoned and suffering. Saint Roque, pray for us. Amen
WARM WELCOME. If you are new to our parish please feel free to introduce yourself to
one of the priests or deacons after Mass today. We kindly invite you to come to the Parish
Office and register as a member of Our Lady of the Snows. Registration is important for all
parishioners because then we are able to issue sponsor letters for Baptism, Confirmation and
Matrimony. We can also give end of the year statements of your contributions to the church
through regular use of the envelopes. We can also help you with letters of recommendation
for employment, school, etc. Your registration will also help us with our parish census in
knowing the number of Catholics in Floral Park and surrounding areas. Thank you and welcome!

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS CATHOLIC ACADEMY
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN OLSCA EIGHTH GRADER?
By Br. Michael Renna, OFS, Chairperson
Here is the answer to last week’s math
problem. I am confident that many of you
were able to figure out the pattern that
exists among the three consecutive
integers. However, the PROOF may be a
little more daunting, but, following the STEM initiative,
this is exactly what we want students to be able to do.
So, for your reading pleasure, continue on…
Here’s an interesting mathematical pattern. Take any
three CONSECUTIVE numbers. Add the first to the third.
Now, double the second. What pattern do you notice?
Repeat this with another three consecutive numbers
and again with a third set. Is the pattern still there?
PROVE MATHEMATICALLY WHY THIS PATTERN EXISTS.
Answer
Adding the first and the third numbers results in a sum
that is equal to doubling the second number. Here’s
the mathematical proof for this pattern:
Let x = the first number, x+1 = the second number and
x+2 = the third number. Adding the first to the third is x
+ x+2 which equals 2x+2. Doubling the second is 2
(x+1) which equals 2x+2
So, 2x+2 = 2x+2 (Identity Principle)—any quantity is
equal to itself. Works every time! This pattern also
exists for any three consecutive odd or even integers.
Prove it to yourself. In this problem, it was necessary to
first identify a pattern, then, provide a mathematical
explanation for the pattern. This is directly in alignment
with STEM initiatives.
