Like most women (and yes, perhaps, even men), have we not at some point in our lives asked the burning question “Why was I born…what is my purpose in life?” That question may be pushed out of consciousness, but at the onset of our twilight years, we take the time and the effort to arrive at an answer.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Some of us are afforded the opportunity to be involved in matters that are perceived as profoundly important. For most of us, however, the life we live may be viewed as ordinary and common.

It is regrettable to focus on making a big difference. The little differences we make can add up to a big difference over time. Sometimes it is enough to keep trying to do our best every single day. As Mother Teresa reminds us, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

And that to me is the heart of the matter. Maybe our main purpose in life is simply to LOVE.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Maria Theresa Abeleda-Llave (HS-73)

IMPORTANT UPDATE

In the wake of various speculations about our alma mater, Sr. Eden Panganiban, Provincial Leader, Rosary Province of the SSpS Congregation issued a statement to respond to these rumors.

In her letter dated January 20, 2015 to Ma. Theresa A. Llave, CHSAF President, Sr. Eden declared:

"The College of the Holy Spirit-Manila has not been sold. However, the SSpS nuns have decided to move out of CHSM and are in the process of finding the best option for CHSM and the SSpS mission. There are negotiations going on with some interested parties, among which is CHSAF.

We continue to count on your prayers."

Visit to Correctional Institute for Women By: Teresa Soliman (BSC-72)

We were welcomed to the Chapel with resounding cheerful greetings of Good Morning and ultra warm smiles. A fiesta atmosphere of happiness, joy, and enthusiasm pervaded the air that Sunday morning of November 16, 2014. We were not attending Holy Mass at a town fiesta We were at the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City to visit the 200-strong prayer group of Sr. Mary Evelyn Bautista, S.Sp.S., and Sr. Marie Grace, S.Sp.S., and distribute packed lunch and loot bags to their members. We were celebrating the 80th birthday of our loving CHSAF Adviser, Sr. Victricia, S.Sp.S. When asked her how she would want to celebrate her birthday, she chose to celebrate it with the members of the prayer group.

It helped a lot, of course, that the priest celebrant was a funny, jolly, person. His homily matched his personality. He said that the Lord loves all of us, and while serving their terms, the ladies can make themselves pretty for the Lord. Then he looked directly at the elderly commentator who had full make-up on, and asked if her pretty eyebrows were real or tattooed. That comment brought the house down. And instead of saying "Peace be with you," he said "Sabihin nyo sa katabi nyo, ‘Bati na tayo.’" This again brought loud giggles to the crowd. In a more serious tone, however, he said that nothing, and no one – more than the Lord – can fill up the void in our life. Finding the Lord in our lives will set us free. He said that those inside can be freer than those living outside who are prisoners of themselves. Those who have found the Lord are free in their hearts.

Right after the Holy Mass, the members presented lively songs and dances. One song tugged at their hearts and brought tears to their eyes. The song was about waiting for loved ones at Christmas, and waiting in vain. But with another lively song and dance, the smiles were back. Soon, the food and loot bags were distributed, and it was time for us to go. The thank you's were unending.

We said our good-byes, and thanked the Lord for a good day.

Representing the CHSAF Board of Trustees and accompanying Sr. Victricia to the CIW were CHSAF VP Lorraine Young- Sylianteng and her ever-supportive husband Robert, Yola Manding-Albano, and me, Teresa G. Soliman.

Maybe we had a preconceived notion of what to expect from people whose freedom is curtailed, for we were taken by surprise at the openness and joy in their faces. And we were in for even more surprises. Their heartfelt participation in the Holy Mass and their enthusiastic singing was a beautiful revelation, The group was very organized too. They had lectors and a commentator, a choir that sang beautifully, ushers/collectors, and altar servers. It must be the influence of our S.Sp.S. Sisters.

For the 3rd year in a row, the CHS Alumnae Foundation organized a Christmas Party for our nuns at the S.Sp.S. convent in Poinsettia, Quezon City. Sr. Ana Belinda was the coordinator for the convent.

Planning was ably done by the CHSAF led by its President, Tess Llave (HS-73), Treasurer, Angie Madrid (HS-72), past VP, Grace Mascenon (HS-73), Board member, Belle Tiongco (HS-77) and supported by the office staff, Benjo Macaso (BSChem-63) and Cora Parco (AB-63/BSE-64). Board members Ging Ong (HS-68), Yola Albano (HS-68), Sabsy Palanca (HS-68), Lorraine Sylianteng (HS-73), Maribel Cabrera (HS-64/BSChem-69), Kate Bellosillo (HS-74), Tonette Brion (BSChem-67), Jean Fadul (HS-74), Bernie Lazaro (HS-63/BSChem68) ,and yours truly came in full force to cheer the Sisters this yuletide season. Among the many other alumnae present were CHSNAF ladies Ellen Young- Gomez (HS-68), Deanna Go Bio (AB-58/BSC-59) and Lenore RS Lim (HS-63).

Thrice the Magic! Christmas Party with the S.Sp.S. Nuns at Poinsettia

December 13, 2014 By: Viqui Torres-del Rosario (HS-77)

The Sisters started trooping to the Hall at around 2:30pm.Some walked in by themselves, but some were in wheelchair and some had caregivers. We could tell the Sisters were as excited as the alumnae who came to spend the afternoon with them. We were able to chat with Sr. Pilar and Sr. Elena Rosa, among others.

Compared to previous years, more alumnae came to join and cheer the Sisters this year. More artists also came to entertain the audience.

Merienda was served before the program. The main dishes were sponsored by Belle Tiongco and prepared by her sister Gina Legaspi (HS-80). Grace Mascenon prepared the dessert spread. Kate Bellosillo and Jean Fadul brought Arce ice cream.

Some alumnae sat beside the nuns to help them with their meal.

The merienda was filling and everyone eagerly awaited the program. The energetic Grace Mascenon, emcee for the afternoon, called everyone not to be shy and to occupy the seats in front.

Thrice the Magic!

Kate Bellosillo shared a beautiful prayer to start the program.

Board Member Viqui del Rosario then introduced world-renowned opera singer Frankie Aseniero who sang two religious songs and a haunting love song. We learned from Frankie's lovely wife, Nenette, that Frankie came at the invitation of Chinggoy Alonso. Chinggoy has been a mainstay in the past two years’ Christmas party for the nuns.

Chinggoy, husband of Beth Bascara (HS-72), was again present to entertain the nuns. Chinggoysang excerpts from the musical Camelot. He sang the story of the legendary King Arthur, his lovely Guinevere, and friend Sir Lancelot.

It was a haunting love story told in song.

Next, Sr. Ana Belinda introduced the kindergarten kids from the Little Angels Learning Center, a pre-school on Dama de Noche Street, a neighbor of the Poinsettia convent. The cute little girls and boys carolled their way to everyone's heart.

When everyone had settled down after the very lively performance of the kids, Lahla Laforteza introduced the "Philippines' Queen of Jazz," our very talented alumna, Louie Reyes (HS-68). Louie received the strongest applause and apologized to the two

gentlemen for the strong support of her “barkada.”

Louie sang well-loved Christmas carols. To add magic to the evening, the three artists – Louie, Frankie, and Chinggoy –serenaded the audience! Where else can one get a musical treat served jointly by an opera singer, a Broadway artist, and a jazz queen?

It was an afternoon of magical delight! Once, twice, thrice, talented artists wove their spell on the beloved Sisters and the caring alumnae. Thank you all!

The story of Nenita de Joya Rivera of HS-49/AB-53 deserves to be written if only to recognize a woman of exceptional determination and will who overcame her limited resources by putting her mind and heart to her desired ends.

Nenita came from a big family of 13 children. Her father was Mariano de Joya, a Supreme Court Justice, and her mother was Mercedes R. de Joya, a leading social worker. Her parents instilled social conscience in their children, celebrating their birthday by donating food and other goodies to charitable institutions.

Nenita married Hector Rivera who developed epilepsy. Since Hector was unable to work, Nenita worked for 10 years in the advertising firm of her brother Tony de Joya. She caught lung cancer from the heavy smoking in the office.

In 1993, Nenita was miraculously healed of her cancer. At that time, she was living in Merville with her eldest sister, Petra, while Hector was confined in the intensive care unit of St. Luke’s Hospital.

Hector and Petra both passed away within a short interval. Tony invited Nenita to live in his house in Loyola Quezon City. While living with Tony, Nenita ran into Artemio “Temmy” Coronel, an old friend.

Temmy invited Nenita to join the prayer meetings in the church. She also joined his group that gives the Life in the Spirit seminars (LSS) in the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. During a sharing session with a prisoner, Nenita was inspired by his story of how he found God and the meaning of life after attending LSS. The prisoner lived out his beliefs by helping fellow prisoners.

NENITA DE JOYA-RIVERA: A WOMAN OF STEEL A personal account by: Pacita Icasiano-Habana (HS-49)

Nenita made up her mind to do her share in feeding prisoners. She had moved back to Merville after Tony’s death. Together with her trusted maid, Mary, and with contributions from a brother, a sister, and a sister-in-law, Lina Pablo De Joya, Nenita and Mary would go to Muntinlupa to feed at least a hundred prisoners by batches. They did this as long as they could while the contributions came from the siblings, but by 2010 only a younger brother, a sister, and Nenita were still alive.

Nenita was well-loved by the prisoners. Whenever they hear of a tragedy that has befallen her, and they were numerous, they would walk on their knees in the chapel to pray for her. When she had a heart attack; when she suffered from lung cancer; when she had a bad fall and fractured her leg; when she met an accident; when she had another bad fall and fractured her shoulder; when she became a victim of a scam perpetrated by a trusted Bank Teller who ran away with the money. Nenita survived the hospitalizations, strokes, fractures, etc., thanks to the prayers of the prisoners, her friends, and relatives.

Starting 2010, some friends in Merville and nearby subdivisions began to take notice of Nenita’s wonderful work in Muntinlupa. The residents organized weekly trips to Muntinlupa on Thursdays and Saturdays to give spiritual, moral, emotional, and physical assistance to the prisoners. Once the parish priest of Merville also joined the volunteers. A Jesuit priest takes care of the chapel where the Masses are held. continued on page 7

STELLA ABRERA, THE PRIDE OF H.S. CLASS 1954 By: Deanna Pardo-Martelino (HS-54/AB-57+/CSS-58)

Stella Mercado-Abrera, a soloist of the American Ballet Theater, literally took Manila by storm when she danced the lead role of Giselle in the Sept. 19, 2014 Gala of the Opening Season of Ballet Philippines on that terribly stormy evening. Surprisingly, many of us braved Typhoon Mario in spite of the objections of our families to watch this romantic tragedy at the Cultural Center about a country girl who surrenders herself to Albrecht, danced by ABT’s newest principal dancer, the dashing James Whiteside, who she later discovers is betrothed to a noblewoman. This is a tale of loss, forgiveness, and love beyond death, impeccably performed by two exceptionally gifted artists who were perfect for their roles. The willowy and beautiful Stella, amazingly graceful, was breathtaking as she seemed to softly float across the stage with flawless technique. She was indeed Giselle, the ethereal spirit protecting her lover from impending death. Adding significance to her homecoming performance, Stella is helping raise funds for the children of Guiuan, Samar, the area hardest hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda. The danseuse’ foundation, Steps Forward for the Philippines, partnered with Operation USA in the building of classrooms for these children. Supported by friends, fans and fellow dancers, she has raised more than half of her $30,000 target. A day before rehearsals started, she flew to Guiuan to inspect the construction of the school’s infrastructure.

Stella, the youngest of the five children of civil engineer Jack Abrera and pianist, Aurora Mercado, a classmate and very dear friend, was born in Manila and left the Philippines when she was 4 years old. She is married to Sascha Radestsky who recently retired as an ABT Soloist. The couple is based in New York while her parents live in Los Angeles.

… continued from page 6

NENITA DE JOYA-RIVERA: …

At present, Nenita goes to Muntinlupa only occasionally because of the fractures in her leg and shoulder. She feels thankful to the Lord for the answered prayers of those who prayed for her. She no longer needs any medication and merely suffers from diabetes.

Lately the number of people going to Muntinlupa has dwindled because many volunteers belong to the old generation. Some have died, and some are too old and sick to travel. But the Life in the Spirit continues, and in this way Nenita's legacy lives on.

Nenita and Mother Rosella

I’d like to share what Nenita told me of the role of Mother Rosella in her life. Mother was our class teacher and adviser. Nenita always visited her in the convent to ask for advice and to seek solace. Mother Rosella welcomed those visit because she herself was lonely, having no more relatives in the United States.

Tony de Joya and Mother Rosella worked together on the first issue of We the Alumnae. Tony was connected with a well-known Catholic newpaper, and Mother Rosella got Tony’s help in starting We the Alumnae.

By the way, Nenita’s older sister Mercedes, a nun of the Good Shepherd congregation, enrolled in the Holy Ghost College College of Music. As a course requirement, the students were asked to compose the school’s Alma Mater song. Mercedes’ composition was chosen and is still sung today. It starts with (O Alma Mater kind and dear….)

… I'm well, still playing golf, water aerobics, and staying in touch with friends. Also busy with "apos". Both Christopher (12) and Samantha (9) are honor students. Chris got the Presidential Academic Award this year (for 4-6 grade) . Now he is in Middle school. Both are active in sports too.

From: Norma Punsalang-Limjuco, Lakeland, Florida, October 14/14:

Greetings to my fellow HGCians from sunny Florida!… although it has been ages since we saw each other as classmates, I still fondly recall our joyful days at HGC. I am sorry I can't be there with you during the festivities…I can see it will be fun and memorable.

Nowadays, I while away my time enjoying the company of my grandchildren but, on occasion, enjoy a nostalgic stroll down memory lane while talking to Baby Posadas-Nicholas and Ester Reyes-Talavera on the phone for hours. We reminisce about good old days and share stories of our lives since then. Stories about families, kids and grandkids and perhaps, in the not too distant future, even great grandkids. I feel blessed for having led a simple yet comfortable life, surrounded by loved ones and a spiritual closeness with our Lord. I thank our parents for giving us the opportunities to enjoy our respective successes in life, most especially for starting us off at Holy Ghost College where we were able to obtain a first rate education upon which to build our lives and to meet and make friends that lasted a lifetime.

****** Posted on Facebook by Pilar Guerrero-Pizarro, Sampaloc, Manila, Dec. 05/14:

Alam mo kung ano ang sinabi (about the rehearsals) ni Felipa? … It is not so much the dancing that I enjoy. It is the simple and friendly camaraderie that we have. Our problems and worries vanish and we go back to our high school years. I’m sure many of us are feeling the same way.

****** From: Violeta Joaquin-Seitz (BSBio-87), Tracy, California, Nov. 30/14:
