Nor am I simple-minded in an "us- versus-them" to paint all of white America with a broad brush. No. That isn't the point here. We may have to come to the sad conclusion that the "American Dream" is just that: a dream. It is a fairy tale we tell ourselves; a fable that's comforting before bedtime. It's what we expect our politicians to "say" and say onl y; in the spirit of the Bard Shakespeare (Macbeth): "life is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!" It was definitely the village idiot in Austin, Texas when tampons and diabetic medication were confiscated at the capital, while concealed carry weapons were allowed. Fight for the fetus; kill it when it forms an opinion. It has been said the law has very little to do with justice. And all the platitudes about "lifting ourselves by our own bootstraps" were just that! Colin Powell - decorated Vietnam vet (volunteered 3X to go), 4 Star General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor - could well have become the 1st black president & the 1st time African-Americans voted for a republican en mass since reconstruction: the GOP made issue of Alma Powell's mental health as a distraction (seemed not to matter with Al and Tipper Gore in 2000. Not to say Tipper didn't have a good reason, but Alma had a very good one for her depression: see "volunteered 3X to go"); so for peace in his household he declined to serve. THIS president did the heavy lifting at Columbia and Harvard Law School; from poverty, moving from place-to- place around the globe with his white mother to the White House with a family only missing two more daughters and Theo from "the Huxtables." We've had several months of anemic but consecutive job growth; we "magically found" a 117 billion dollar surplus (post the Bush Tax cuts everyone wanted to make permanent). Yet, THIS president has been called Kenyan/non- American, a fraud, a terrorist, fascist, racist, idiot, jackal, the Antichrist, communist, socialist without CRACKING a bible, dictionary or thesaurus: say it because it "sounds good!" It's no wonder the man looks 102! THIS president has been a lightning rod for the dark underbelly of this so-called gloriously fair "democratic-republic": it is a facade. One month from the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington: 7 month anniversary to-the- day of the slaughter of 20 children and 6 teachers in Newtown, Connecticut (no universal background checks, but a lot of panic gun sales fattening the pockets of the gun lobby and the NRA); section 4 of the Voting Rights act gutted; SNAP removed from the Farm Bill that will make more children and seniors go to bed hungry (and for the seniors: possibly not wake up the next day in this life); more segregated now than ever leading to the acquittal and license-to-kill of and for the manufacture of more George Zimmerman’s wherever ALEC has laid its vulturous, legal feces, and more Rachel’s crying over their Trayvons. We will be a footnote on the pages of history; a former empire like Rome that crumbled from within; a laughing stock to sentient aliens wise enough NOT make contact with what clearly amounts to an insane asylum; a great, cosmic joke! Do me a favor: QUIT calling this a "Christian nation" because by our actions and the way we allow elected officials to pull cruel, mean, u gly things on our "least of these," we clearly are not!
