It will take years for the country to fully recover, but we know that Lions will be there every step of the way. My home club, Daly City Host Lions Club will visit 19 schools in our community this year to explain to 3rd and 5th graders the origin, meaning, and history of the United States Flag. Our presenter talks about how and where the flag was made and the changing of the design over the years. He also tells the children about unusual places where the flag is, including on the moon, as well as interesting information where the flag played a major role. We provide a small flag for each child and teacher present. We give the flags to the teachers to distribute at the end of the school day to prevent possible “sword fights”. These flags are available through the district. The information is in the District Directory. I am also available by phone or email to provide this information to you. We also invite the local VFW to attend the event to demonstrate the ceremonial folding of the flag, while explaining the meaning of each fold. Many of the children are not familiar with our Country’s flag and tradition. The question and answer period following the presentation is always lively and fun. Not So Fast!

I can’t believe that January is nearly done. I’m not even ready to say goodbye to 2009, especially the wonderful times we had at the end of last year. It seemed that each day in December provided another holiday party or Lions project. We were ei-ther celebrating amongst ourselves along with our families and friends or working to help some strangers have a better life and a decent holiday. We collected goods and supplies for the needy and our troops. We sent clothes and wheelchairs abroad – with the help of Leos. We cooked and fed the homeless and underprivileged. We showed a new found energy in supporting a home named after Rose. December is always a wonderful and heart-felt time. It’s a culmination of a year of hard work and commitment. It’s a time to cele-brate our families and friendships. It’s a time to give. Coming out of Thanksgiving where we are grateful for our fortune, we pick up steam into December and show our generos-ity. As Lions, we seem to work harder in December. Our hearts seem heavier and we tend to give more. Or do we? In my opinion, I believe December is when Lions reach their stride. Yes, we perform great service throughout the year, but December is when

we really get moving. We tirelessly give of ourselves during the so called “giving sea-son.” Yet, I believe we take the momentum right into the New Year.

As we usher in the New Year, we watch a parade and a bunch of football. We busy ourselves to get reorganized and recharged for a new beginning. Many of us are anxious to achieve goals that are meant to be accom-plished sooner than later. Projects and fund-raisers are abundant, and the year already seems to be fully-booked. However, I’m still marveling over the last six months.

I say it over and over again – I am so proud to be a Lion, and it is such an honor to be your District Governor. I have witnessed the hard work and dedication of our members. I have enjoyed the best of fun and fellowship with all of you. And I truly look forward to the fruits of the New Year. I just wish it wasn’t moving so fast.

With Love and Service, DG Ken

GOVERNOR Hello Fellow Lions. Hope the Holidays went well for you.

The New Year is going to bring some new and very exciting changes to the Merlo program. First we are adding to the Merlo Team, PDG Ray, Mel and Eugene are joining the Team. We are going to start a 5 year program to increase the membership and keep the membership we have. We are going to have a club membership chair training class. We have 45 clubs and expect to have 45 club membership chairs at the training, to be held in February. Next, we are going to have a new member orientation class to be held in March. Orientation of members will help the retention of members Part of the Merlo Team is busy getting two new clubs started with a good chance for a third. Every club in the District will be hearing from the Merlo Team. The Team can’t do it alone. Thank You. Lion Mike FYI – Save the Date – August 15, 2010

DISTRICT

GOVERNOR My fellow Lions, If you were not at the Veterans Fund-raising event last January 16th you missed a fun and very successful fundraising led by PDG Roger Chin and his team. My contribution? I was “a dancer” and I hope I collected enough dance tickets, I actually had fun, I met several interesting people there’s a writer, a Rotarian, USO Director and I’ve learned a lot from our fellow Lions, like Lion Dan Andersen used to be in the Air Force, Lion Dick Kishimoto was in the service for 43 years. How about the Navy has a summer uniform and a winter uniform. I wore my father-in-law’s winter Navy uniform from the 1940’s. Prepare yourself for next year, I heard they will do it again. Thanks to the committee, PDG Al, Lion Rich, Lion Theresa, Lion Verdie, Lion Helen and Lion Dick. This week is a busy one for the Cabinet, we have DG Visitations every night but it’s great because we learn about the clubs progress and I’m sure DG Ken is elated inducting sev-eral new Lions. We’ve enjoyed our Visita-tions meeting with all the Lions. Welcome to all the newly-inducted Lions and thank you to the sponsors. We will have a new member orientation on March 13th so it would be a good start if they can attend the orientation. Remember that quality members are good - at the same time you want your members to be committed rather than just interested in the Lions. The District is also addressing this by putting together a session for Membership Chairs. Watch for the full information on these ses-sions. See you at the Cabinet Meeting on February 20th in Foster City. Lion Esther Lee

LIONS DISTRICT 4-C4 We Serve - San Francisco to Palo Alto - January 2010

Thank you to the Lions of 4C4 for their support at the San Francisco 49ers / SFPD Operation Dream Toy Drive on December 14, 2009. Special thanks to the Castro Lions, TCCWA Lions and Glide Church for their hard work shaking those buckets to collect money for this very worthwhile event.

Collectively, the non-profits, schools and Lions collected close to $9,000 that day and several thousand toys. These toys were then distributed through non-profits serving the poor neighborhoods. Thank you Lions! Maria Gonzalez, Pres. LP TCCWA Lions

Our Membership - MERLO Update With the onset of the New Year, it gives me great pleasure in announcing the plans that our MERLO Team has developed for the remainder of the year: Membership Workshop: Under the direction of VDG Mike Simonini, PDG Ray Rosenthal, and Membership Chair Erik Winkler, there will be a Membership Workshop geared to give each club an understanding of how to recruit members and how to keep them. The work-shop date has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9am-12pm at the Oyster Pt. Yacht Club in SSF. New Member Orientation: PDG Mel Phillips and Orientation Chair Lion Ron Fenech will develop this new program, meant to gather the Class of 2009-2010 in a casual setting amongst peers and inform them of the world of Lionism. The Orientation date has been scheduled for Saturday, March 13 from 9am-11am at the Oyster Pt. Yacht Club in SSF. To date there are over 100 new Lions in our Dis-trict. DG Ken will send personalized invita-tions to each new Lion. Leadership Training: The dates have been set for the annual President-Elect Training and Club Officer Training seminars. We have scheduled the President-Elect Training Semi-nar (PETS) for Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 9am-3pm, tentatively set for the Oyster Pt. Yacht Club. The Club Officer Training Work-shop will be the following Saturday, June 19, 2010 from 9am-1pm at the Millbrae Recrea-tion Center. DG Ken will chair PETS and Lion Paul Cademartori, Leadership Development Chair, will chair the Club Officer Training Workshop. Extension: The Extension Team will resur-rect the development of the West Portal Lions Club and have planned a re-canvassing of the neighborhood on Feb. 9, followed by an Orientation Meeting on Feb. 18. In addition, DG Ken and First Lady Amy have undertaken the task of forming a Special Olympics Lions

Club. A formal announcement will be sent out this week that will outline the goals of a Spe-cial Olympics Lions Club and invitation to an Information Meeting on Feb. 10. There are currently 10 committed individuals. MERLO Team: The MERLO Team is ready and willing to visit those clubs who request assistance and guidance. The team of experi-enced and dedicated Lions is prepared to offer information and help in dealing with is-sues such as orientation and membership retention. Compensation for the assigned MERLO individuals will be provided for meal costs incurred while visiting clubs. New Developments: PDG Eugene Chan is involved in helping a group of Nepalese busi-nessmen form a club in SF. Informational/Orientation meetings are being scheduled. I wish to thank the Cabinet and MERLO Team for their enthusiasm and dedication in achieving strong and quality membership in our clubs. At the same time, we are develop-ing dedicated leaders and programs that work. Thank you all for your efforts, DG Ken

Key Messages to Answer the Question “What Is Lions?” When talking to the media and others in your community about your Lions club and Lions Clubs International, it is helpful to know what messages you want to get across. Please review the Key Messages below now and prior to interviews, activities where the media might be present and visits to other organizations and schools. Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, with a network of 1.3 million men and women in more than 200 countries and geographical locations. We serve where we live, as well as globally, and we have fun doing it. Though well known for its successful initiatives in vision health, Lions service is as diverse as its members. We meet all sorts of needs, from assisting the elderly to helping victims of natural disasters. Lions give 100 percent of donations to our causes. We cover all our costs through our dues. Lions make a difference everyday

everywhere. Whether by organizing a pancake breakfast fundraiser or building a wheelchair ramp for someone in need, we are a hands-on organization. What do Lions do? Lions meet the needs of our communities and the world, ranging from assisting the visually impaired and working with local youth to medical missions and disaster relief. How are Lions relevant to today's world? Since 1917, Lions have met the needs in their communities and continued to improve the areas in which they live. As long as there are needs around the world, we will work to

meet those needs. Are there women Lions? Yes. Women are the single fastest growing segment of Lions. I would like to volunteer in my community but why should I do so as a Lion? Lions meet the needs of those in their own communities as well as around the world and we have fun doing it. Working together locally and internationally, the worldwide network of Lions has vastly more resources and is able to accomplish much more than individuals nd small groups working alone.

The Amazing Little Room DG Ken, CC Emil and I had the opportunity to visit the Monterey Park Lions Club along with International President Eberhard Wirfs, Lady Margit and other District Governors of MD 4. You may wonder what’s so special about this club. Three little words. White Cane Days. Who would have known that in this little room, over a million white canes are produced each year? The little room is housed in the Monterey Park Lion’s clubhouse and was built in 1954 by two former members. At this time, there is only one member, Dale Butler who knows how to run this machine. It all starts with a spool of plastic which goes onto a giant wheel that forms the canes, then cuts them. From there, it goes a very short

distance, where the ends are dipped in a fast drying red paint, then moves on down the line where it drops into a paper bag. The canes are packed into bags of either 5000 or 1000 and are weighed each time a bag is filled and before they are sent out. I was told that they also add an extra handful of canes to ensure that there is no shortage. I was amazed when I saw the counter. I asked Dale about it and he told me that the counter was put in about 15 years ago, so it is off by 40 years worth of production!

LIONS DISTRICT 4-C4 We Serve - San Francisco to Palo Alto - January 2010

Haitian Relief Effort - Continued from Page 1 If there is one thing that makes Lions unique from other service agencies, it's that we commit for the long term and we work within the affected communities - through our local Lions -- to rebuild for a better tomorrow. The Haitian Lions are our brothers and sisters, members of our international family, and we will never let them down. As you are likely aware, Lions have already moved swiftly to provide immediate assistance despite the coordination challenges. Lions relief tents are being shipped from Sweden; Lions from Canada on a mission in Haiti during the quake gave first aid assistance during the first hours and days; and Lions in the Caribbean area are sending aid over land and by sea. Additionally, a coordinating committee of Lions in Haiti, Dominican Republic and nearby countries are actively planning for the next steps, and our foundation chairperson, Al Brandel, immediate past international president, will be traveling there to meet with them beginning tomorrow. Naturally, the response by Lions to LCIF's Lions Hope for Haiti donation appeal has been tremendous. Within days, we have already mobilized more than US$350,000. By the time you receive this email, I am sure it will be even much, much more. But we'll need millions more if we are to help the country rebuild, to provide homes for the homeless, to rebuild schools for the children, to rehabilitate those left disabled, and to help heal so many shattered and broken hearts. So please donate what you can.

Lastly, I am extremely saddened to report that two of our Haitian Lions -- our family -- have perished and other Lions may have lost family members. On behalf of Lions the world over and members of our international board, we offer our sincere, heartfelt condolences and sympathies to our Lions family who have suffered such personal losses. To our Lions family in Haiti, I commit to you that the Lions of the world will be there for you today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, the year after that - and again for as long as it takes. There will be more updates from LCIF Chairperson Brandel in the days to come. Meanwhile read the latest LCIF update on Haiti, including information on how you can make a personal online donation. I thank you all ahead of time for any further assistance you can provide. With sympathies, Eberhard J.
