Assumption Youth Take Part in March for Life
The annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. took place on Jan. 19. A group of 47 people from Assumption Youth Minis-try (18 high school students, 19 eighth-graders, nine adult chaperones, and Father Keller) left for the Generation Life pilgrimage on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and returned to St. Louis on Sunday, Jan. 21.
Generation Life is open to groups across the Archdiocese. This year, more than 2,200 teenagers and chaperones took part in the event.
Assumption Youth Ministry’s participation in the March for Life was made possible in part by the generosity of the Father Griffin Council of the Knights of Columbus and Assumption’s Pro-Life Committee. The Pro-Life Committee not only con-tributed financially, but members also gave their time to direct traffic (in very cold weather!), as Assumption was a “launch site” for six of the 41 buses.
Thank you to everyone who made this experience a memorable one for the youth of Assumption, including our Assumption Senior Ministry members who provided prayer cards and travel games for each participant, as well as, handmade travel pillows for the long bus ride! Lastly, the pilgrimage would not have been possible without the selflessness of the six young adults and our two seminarians who volunteered as chaperones!
Candidate: Mr. David Schaeffer for the Major Order of Sacred Diaconate Canon 1029 – After all circumstances have been taken into account in the prudent judgment of the proper bishop or the competent major superior, only those should be promoted to orders who have an integral faith, are motivated by a right intention, possess the required knowledge, and enjoy a good reputation, good morals, and proven virtues, and other physical and psychological qualities which are appropriate to the order to be received.
The above is what Canon Law says about one who petitions the Archbishop to be ordained a Deacon. Canon 1029 makes it clear that becoming a Deacon is not about fulfilling require-ments, it is about an integrated lifestyle of love for Jesus Christ and of service to the Church.
Following the age-old custom of the Church, as maintained by Canon Law (Canon Law 1051, paragraph 2), it is my privilege to announce publicly that Mr. David Schaefer is a candidate for the major order of Sacred Diaconate, to be conferred on June 2, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica. Anyone who knows any reason why this candidate should not be ordained is bound to disclose this immediately.
Please join me in prayer for Mr. Schaefer and for each of the diaconate candidates, that these times of immediate prepa-ration for ordination will be times of extraordinary grace and abiding peace.
God bless, Father Keller

Christian marriage and family life is a source of grace and many blessings.
The priests at Assumption are happy to sit down with couples to discuss how to grow together in holiness.
The priests prepare couples for marriage, provide counseling, initiate an annulment, or con-validate a civil marriage.

Assumption Day with the St. Louis Ambush Support the Assumption Youth Choir when they sing at the St. Louis Ambush soccer game on Feb. 25 at the Family Arena in St. Charles! Tickets cost $10 each, and can be ordered through the school or parish office (checks made payable to Assumption Parish).
Thank You Assumption! The Prison Ministry team would like to
thank Assumption parishioners for Serving Christ in others by contributing food and monetary donations in 2017. Your generosity
enabled the team to provide a Christmas meal for the Catholic prisoners in the
Potosi Correctional Center.

Parish Library Volunteers Needed
As we approach Lent, Church reminds us to step back from our everyday routine and take time to reflect on what we can do to better serve our community.
Our Assumption Parish library is an excellent resource available to all our parishioners. Volunteering in the library provides you with hands-on resources that deepen your relation-ship with God. For those who may not have visited our library, it is located in the church lower level and is open every Sunday morning. Feel free to stop by and see how you can help by volunteering!
You may also e-mail Sharon Bathon at [email protected] or call 314-749-8872 (if needed, please leave a message). Your help would contribute greatly to the success of our Parish library.
At Assumption Parish, we have a number of ways to get involved:
· Small Prayer Groups · Helping to Plan Activities for the 50+ Club · Meal Preparations for Homebound or a Dish for Funeral Luncheons · Small Group Book Discussions · Weekday Library Volunteers
Get Involved! Call the Senior Ministry Office at
314-487-7970, ext. 1228, for more information.
Fall Prevention Discussed on Wednesday
During Senior Wednesday Activities on Jan. 24, and thanks to the suggestion of Assumption Parishioner and Occupational Therapist Bernadette Valko, we watched a video called, “How to Prevent Falls in the Home: Tips from The American Occu-pational Therapy Association and the National Council on Aging.” In the video, an occupational therapist visits a senior’s home and makes suggestions for modifying certain rooms to prevent the senior from falling. We discussed low cost items and ideas after viewing the film.
We also made an emergency information kit for a senior (or single person living alone) to keep in their freezer. If you would like the handouts from our discussion or the Emergency Medical Service information kit, call our Senior Ministry Office at 314-487-7970, ext. 1221. If you would like the video link to be e-mailed to you, e-mail [email protected].
If you or a senior member of your family (or a friend) needs FREE medical equipment, call St. Louis HELP (Health Equipment Lending Program) at 314-567-4700.

Students Study St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
On Monday evening, the Assumption Parish School of Religion students celebrated the bicentennial of St. Rose Philip-pine Duchesne by learning more about her dream to travel to America to be a missionary to the Native Americans. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne fulfilled this dream when she was 72 years old. The children learned that she was known as “the woman who always prays.” The students then spent time in prayer.
Those who were baptized in January received the baptismal blessing. Mrs. Reinhardt’s class went to confession.
Next PSR Class: #19 The Missions
The preschool students learned about “the baby in the basket.” Moses was saved by being placed in the basket in the river.

The Church now permits cremation. It was prohibited in the past because cremation signaled a denial of the resurrection. Today, the Church recognizes the practicality of cremation, as funerals have become expensive and graves take up a lot of space.
However, Catholics are not permitted to keep human ashes in a home or to scatter them. All cremated ashes should be interred in a blessed grave, crypt, or columbarium. For Catholics, the disposal of human remains is not a matter of convenience, but an act of hope that prepares both body and soul for the resurrection on the Last Day.

Root Beer and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
The fifth- and sixth-graders took advantage of some of the wonderful sites of St. Louis. The students recently took a field trip to Fitz’s, and saw some of the stars on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. At Fitz’s, they were each given a bottle of root beer. The children used their root beers to make floats. Did you know that you can see all three states of matter in a root beer float (solid, liquid and gas)? Also, the students talked about how many cities were between St. Louis and Chicago, how the bottling process worked and that their favorite part was lunch and drinking the root beer! After touring Fitz’s, the children walked the Stars of Delmar Ave. They were excited to see the star of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and learn a little more about the saint.

2018 Safe Environment Background Check Updates
Archdiocesan policy mandates that all who work with children and the elderly be in full compliance with the Safe Envi-ronment Program. Compliance involves: 1) attending a Protecting God’s Children workshop; 2) reading and signing a Code of Ethical Conduct; and 3) completion of a FCSR background check before a person begins their ministry (which gets updated each “even” year).
Our parish is in the process of updating all necessary background checks for 2018. If you are no longer active in your ministry, please contact the parish Child Safety Coordinator, Bridget Davis at 314-487-7970, ext. 1215 or e-mail: [email protected].
If you are new to Assumption or would like to learn more about being involved in a ministry, please let us know, too!
Thank you so much for your ministry at
