One of the most popular attractions of the Jagannatha Temple of Puri comprises of its Rath Yatra that is organized every year. Bhubaneswar with its modern buildings and extensive infrastructure perfectly complements its historic surroundings with facilities to cater to every type of visitor. Bhubaneswar makes an ideal tourist destination. Ashokan Edicts At Dhauli Hills - The famous rock edicts of Ashoka, inscribed in the third century BC, are located at Dhauli, around 8 km from Bhubaneswar. The carnage that followed the Kalinga War transformed the emperor, and he came here some 2,300 years ago to seek salvation. It is also believed that Ashoka set out to preach Buddhism from Dhauli. A white stupa (pillar), built in collaboration with Japanese Buddhists, is located on the hills and can be seen from miles away. Lingaraja Temple - The 55-metre-high Lingaraja Temple is a rare masterpiece depicting the high point of Orissan architecture of the 10th-11th century. Described as ”the truest fusion of dream and reality” every inch of its surface is covered with elaborate carvings of gods, goddesses, dryads, nymphs and fairies. The temple can be seen from miles away and the sculpture and architecture here fuse elegantly to create a perfect harmony. It is believed that all pilgrims, who wish to go to the Jagannath temple at Puri, must first offer worship at the Lingaraja temple. The temple has two added structures—the Natya Mandir (dance hall) and the Bhoga Mandap (offering platform). It is important to note that non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Lingaraja Temple. Udayagiri – A famous tourist place, renowned for the ruins of the massive fort of fourteenth century. The excavations revealed a sprawling complex of brick monastery with a number of Buddhist sculptures that were located at the base of a hefty hill. This monastery, which date back between 7th and 12th centuries AD, is indeed a worthy place for a visit. A favourite place of tourists, historians, researchers, and art lovers, this archaeological remains presents a rich heritage. During the large excavation from 1997 to 2000, a second part (Udayagiri-2) was discovered with additional stupas and monasteries. Ongoing excavations in Udayagiri disclosed more and more Buddhist complexes, and a large number of sculptures found out from there are Boddhisattva and Dhyani Buddha. Khandagiri - Khandagiri Caves are found in the hills, which are 6 km from Bhubaneshwar. Khandagiri give ample proof of Jain and Buddhist occupation of the region at least by the 2nd century B.C. The Khandagiri Caves are reached via a steep path which divides halfway up the hill. To the right is Ananta Cave with its carved figures of elephants, and women which are worth a visit. It offers a fine bird eye view of Bhubaneshwar from its summit. The steep path up divides about third of the way up the hill. Further along there is a series of Jain Temples and, at the top, there is another Jain Temple dating from the 18th Century. At the base of the hill, to the right, are the two storied "Rani Gupha or Queens Place" cave. This is the largest and most impressive cave on the lower story. Nandan Kanan - Nandan Kanan National Park is situated 20 Km from Bhubaneswar. The name Nandan Kanan means 'Garden of Pleasure', which gets justified when one enters the park. Along the banks of lake Kanjia and amidst natural forest, is located one of India'a largest Tiger-safari, along with a reptile park, a botanical garden and a nocturnal animal park. The park has an interesting history that the idea of the park was given by National Geographic magazine. It happened so that a wild female tiger came to the zoo, found a tiger enclosure, and stayed there. It was unique in the way that no animal wants to stay in a fenced zoo. National Geography pointed out that there should be constructed a sophisticated zoo for tigers and Nandan Kanan came into existence. Currently Nandan Kanan has over 34 white tigers. Gopalpur: The beach at Gopalpur is blessed with some of the most pristine shoreline on the eastern coast of India. This quiet beach stretches about half a mile on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The sand is free from shells and quite clean. The water is warm and comforting through out the year and ideal for swimming. The beach is quiet enough for you to find a spot for yourself to relax with the blue skies on the backdrop (except of course during monsoon) and the gentle breeze soothing the tired mind. Berhampur - The trading town of Berhampur is famous for its delicious pickles and hand woven Tassar silk textiles.

Taptapani - Surrounded by verdant greenery, the natural hot sulphur springs of Taptapani are renowned to have medicinal

properties. Mahuri Kalua - It is a picturesque spot and is also home to a shrine of Goddess Kalua.

Patisonapur - The beautifully secluded untouched beach of Patisonapur is one of the top places to visit in and around

Gopalpur. Jaugarh - This is famous for being home to a rock edict of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka.

along the shore. Chilika Lake The vast and dream like Chilika Lagoon is situated on the east-coast of India. It is the largest brackish Water Lagoon with estuarine character that sprawls along the east coast. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian sub-continent. It is one of the hotspot of biodiversity in the country, and some rare, vulnerable and endangered species listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened Animals inhabit in the lagoon for atleast part of their life cycle. A survey of the fauna of Chilika carried out by the Zoological Survey of India in 1985-87 recorded over 800 species in and around the lagoon. The lagoon is the wintering ground for more than one million migratory birds. The Chilika Lagoon is very famous for Irrawaddy Dolphins. Kalijai Temple Kalijai temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and Jai. It is located on the island in Chilika Lake. The temple is highly revered by local people and fisherman community. This temple got its name from a village girl named Jai who according to the legend was drowned and became the Goddess Kalijai. Birds View One can find almost every species of birds in bird sanctuary of Odisha. The sanctuary attracts a large number of birds during winter where bird enthusiasts can have a blissful view of those beautiful creatures. The birds like white bellied sea eagles, Graylag geese, purple moorhen, flamingo, jacana, herons, Brahminy kite, spotbilled pelican, heron, egret, pelican, kingfisher etc are found in large numbers.

Taratarini Temple - Perched on top a hill, Taratarini Temple is a beautiful place of pilgrimage amidst scenic surrounds.

Boat Ride Boat riding is popular in Chilika Lake. People visit this lake for bird watching, Kalijai temple, boating and for watching dolphins.
