ChristmasWelcome
The beautiful park and woodland nuzzles the edges of the house and offers a welcome space for you to walk the dog, ride your bike, spot some wildlife or simply enjoy a little peace during a very busy time. If you haven’t yet visited Cultivating Earth behind the teashop then pop in and learn more about why we all love working on our small patches of Earth even during the dark winter months.
When the winter weather has left you chilly head in doors for a warm welcome from the team working in the house and a huge range of activity to put some colour in your cheeks and get your brain truly defrosted. We’ll have two trees – yes two! - both will enchant in very different ways. Sarah Turner, renowned eco-designer artist, has recycled 100’s of ordinary plastic bottles and created a truly amazing tree for the Green Room. And if traditional is your preference, the real Christmas tree and decorations will delight, there will be music from local choirs, Christmas smells wafting from the kitchen and teashop, two superb exhibitions to enjoy and lots of activities for the children. Our Christmas shop has some great gift ideas and there will be festive baking delights to try.
We hope everyone has a very Happy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you to the house and park in 2013……and remember a quick walk round the park will easily work off the worst of your Christmas and New Year indulgences.
in Callendar House & Park
This year Callendar House & Park will be glowing with a Christmas blend of indoor and outdoor activity for the whole family.

The winning and finalist images from one of the most prestigious international photography competitions were revealed in March 2012 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. An exhibition of these spectacular photographs will be in Callendar House this winter, just one venue on the international tour, and the first time the show will be in Scotland. It brings together the best garden, nature and outdoor photography from around the world, and includes the work of local photographer Graham Harris Graham. The competition allows photographers to explore the natural world with magical flowers appearing in ‘The Beauty of Plants’ category, secret and fascinating creatures in ‘Wildlife Havens’, breathtaking and delightful views in ‘Beautiful Gardens’, incredible and interesting urban life captured in ‘Greening the City’, and a celebration of outdoor places in ‘Breathing Spaces’ (sponsored by the National Trust). The collection gives an insight to the wonders of plants, gardens, landscapes and nature. Be amazed and inspired.

This show looks at how coins came into being, what went before them and how we ended up with bits of plastic in our pockets that can buy cars. Come along and see Roman coins, locally printed bank notes, forged bank notes, the plates that made them, and shredded modern money. And before you start planning it, no you cannot stick the notes back together, we tried!

Sarah Turner. Sarah is an award winning eco artist and designer making beautiful products from waste materials. Her latest project was for the London Olympics where Coca Cola commissioned her to make lighting and a huge sculpture for their hospitality centre at the Olympic Park.
Falkirk Community Trust has commissioned her to make a recycled Christmas tree for Winter Warmth 2012 which will illuminate the Green Room at Callendar House from the 17th November. It will stand 2 metres high and will be made from waste plastic drinks bottles.
Hannah Nunn lives and works in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. She runs a successful practice as a designer and maker of paper-cut lighting.
“I am very much inspired by the natural world and spend a lot of time walking in the woods and hills with my camera making visual notes. My studio often looks like a nature table covered with things that I have collected waiting to be turned into lamp designs.”
Mr & Mrs YOKE aka Mark and Zoe are the design duo behind the cool Perth-based illustration and printmaking label, YOKE. Their illustrations have been transformed into a number of hand printed products, including their signature hand pulled screen prints.

Winter Warmth has built up a reputation for
showcasing original, high quality art and design work from a wealth of artists, designers and
craft makers in Scotland and the UK.
This year’s exhibition theme is Illuminate. We intend to celebrate the originality and talent of
designer/makers who are using light to bring their
craft to life and also artists from other disciplines
whose work aims to illuminate our lives.
This exhibition will include work by artists at the
forefront of their practice.

Kate Lycett. Kate takes her influences from the local landscape, and is also inspired by the work of Schiele, Klimt, Hundertwasser, Anna Pugh and Michael Morgan. With a background in Textile Design the influence of surface pattern is always present in Kate’s work. Even with figurative and landscape pieces she reduces elements to flat pattern, and embellishes with embroidery, collage or gold leaf.
Lesley Anne Derks works from her studio in Larbert. “From an early age lights at night have always fascinated me. The elements such as rain, sleet, snow and mist gave new life to an established scene. Living in an industrial town reinforced this fascination. The lights of the man made industrial scene created a mystical atmosphere in my fertile imagination."
Karen Millar is based in Falkirk. She launched Little Silverleaf several years ago as a small creative stationery project using only recycled materials, such as books, maps, and magazines..
“Winter Warmth 2012 will be a great opportunity to see innovative artwork of the highest standard, and will provide an irresistible choice if you’re looking for unique ideas for your Christmas shopping as all work is for sale and available to take away” Gillian smith, ado Community engagement.
