BE ROCK Peter’s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn’t feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God’s power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter’s great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth. Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the fail- ings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messi- ah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wis- dom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Je- sus Christ can be founded and on which it can contin- ue to be built. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. BE ROCK

Peter’s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty.

Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the fail-ings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messi-ah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wis-dom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. From Fr. Chris... Dear Sisters and Brothers, It’s not difficult to notice how our society is becoming more and more secular every day. Atheists are becoming bolder and more vocal in their attacks on people who choose to believe in a loving and compassionate God. Atheists choose not to believe and we need to respect that, as God Himself respects their freedom to choose. But God still cares for them and will find ways to reveal Himself to them, even if they choose to deny His existence. I, personally, take comfort in stories like this: “There has long been the tale of the Loch Ness monster in the highlands of Scotland. Some people claim that they have seen its dark form on the surface of the murky waters; others claim the tale is just an hoax. Well it seems that an atheist was spending a quiet day fishing on the lake when suddenly his boat was rocked by the monster. The beast threw him and his boat high into the air. Then it opened its mouth to swallow them both. As the Atheist fell to certain death, he cried out, "Please, good God, help me!" At once the terrifying scene froze in place, with the man suspended in midair, held by some mysterious force above the gaping jaws of the monster. A booming voice was heard from the clouds, "I thought you didn’t believe in Me!" The man pleaded, "Oh come on God, give me a break! I didn’t believe in the Loch Ness monster either!" There is no denying the existence and power of God. As Saint Paul wrote, “…At the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:10-11).” Keep up the faith! God bless us all, Fr. Chris

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME P 3

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eucharistic Prayer II is a popular choice for Mass since it is both simple in structure and short. It is written with a preface, which is the section after the dialogue "The Lord be with you . . . Lift up your hearts . . . Let us give thanks," which introduces all the Eucharistic Prayers. The preface states the reason for the eucharistic assembly on that occasion, and there are dozens of them covering almost every imaginable gathering for prayer, some specific to feasts, others for Masses for the dead or for other needs. The preface attached to the second Eucharistic Prayer may be dropped in favor of a more appropriate choice, especially one of the prefaces for weekdays. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that Eucharistic Prayer II is best suited for weekdays or "special circumstances." In practice, however, it has become the common Sunday prayer because of its brevity and its comfortable familiarity. It also includes an optional phrase for adding the name of a deceased person remembered in the Mass, and therefore is often prayed at funerals. Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy specified that the rites are to be simplified and restored "to the vigor they had in the tradition of the Fathers." The rebirth of this ancient Roman prayer is a worthy response to this call. Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Saint Martin of Tours Academy A Welcome to all our Families and an

Update for our parish families

The teachers and staff are excited to begin the new school year. On Aug.16th Saint Martin hosted a meeting for principals and teachers from East County Catholic schools. The meeting “Behavior Strategies for the Classroom” gave information and tools to teach all children, especially those children with special needs based on brain research. Almost 100 were in attendance. Parent, Dr. Rienzi Haytasingh, Psy.D. and Crystal Ruse, an AB Analysist, presented.

During the summer, new books were ordered, updating our reading program (K-5), Spanish books and workbooks, Jr. High vocabulary, “Study Sync” Jr. High on-line literature program and Writing our Catholic Faith (handwriting series). Parent meetings begin next week and Star Renaissance testing begins on the 11th. This new program tests children in real time! Children take math and reading tests on computers and results are immediate. This new system is diocesan wide and is administered three times a year.
