BELLS & WELCOME

OPENING HYMN ............. This Is the Day the Lord Has Made – CW 225

Branches Band will sing verse 1; The congregation will join in on the remaining verses

This is the day the Lord has made; He calls the hours his own. Let heav’n rejoice; let earth be glad And praise surround the throne. Today he rose and left the dead, And Satan’s empire fell; Today the saints his triumphs spread And all his wonders tell. Hosanna to the anointed King, To David’s holy Son! Help us, O Lord; descend and bring Salvation from the throne. Blessed is Jesus Christ, who came With messages of grace, Who came in God the Father’s name To save our sinful race. Hosanna in the highest strains The Church on earth shall raise; The highest heav’ns, in which he reigns, Shall give him nobler praise.

INVOCATION

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION (based on Scripture and CW 493)

Responsive verses – CW 493 “Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive” M: Each of us is tempted when we are dragged away by our own evil desire and enticed. After desire has conceived, it

gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death (James 1:14,15). We have the promise that if we forgive other people when they sin against us, our heavenly Father will also forgive our sins (Matthew 6:14). Let us pray for a heart of forgiveness that we too may be forgiven.

BB: “Forgive our sins as we forgive,” You taught us, Lord, to pray, But you alone can grant us grace To live the words we say.

ALL: How can your pardon reach and bless The unforgiving heart That broods on wrongs and will not let Old bitterness depart?

M: We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans

3:23). We all have failed to forgive our brothers and sisters in Christ when we ought. Let us confess our sins and ask God to forgive us.

C: Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. (Psalm 130:1-3)

Out of my weakness and utter sinfulness comes an unwillingness to forgive my neighbor, a tendency to hold grudges against my friends, and the desire to leverage past wrongs against my family. Have mercy on me, O God,

3 Page

according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (Psalm 51:1-2)

Silent Confession BB: In blazing light your cross reveals

The truth we dimly knew; What trivial debts are owed to us; How great our debt to you!

M: Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians

2:4-5). Therefore as Godʼs chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12-14).

C: Help us, Lord, to get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Grant us hearts to be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave us. (Ephesians 4:31-32) ALL: Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls

And bid resentment cease; Then, bound to all in bonds of love Our lives will spread your peace.

M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

ALL: Love among Christians, love in the fam’ly, Love for the Savior, whose blood was shed, Love and submission one to another As unto Christ, who reigns as our head.

SERMON .......................................................... Romans 12:9-21 (p. 1123) APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand

of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Please be seated.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung by Branches Band)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

ANTHEM ................. My Jesus Lives – by Rachel Braun, Branches Band (with Emanuel Students at 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. services)

My Jesus lives, my Jesus lives; Saved me and all my sin forgives. My Jesus lives. My Jesus came, my Jesus came; Humbled himself from heav’nly reign. My Jesus came. My Jesus preached, my Jesus preached; Shared truth and love with all he reached. My Jesus preached.

8 Page

My Jesus died, my Jesus died; For all my sins was crucified. My Jesus died. My Jesus rose, my Jesus rose; He conquered death and all my foes. My Jesus rose. My Jesus reigns, my Jesus reigns; When he returns he’ll call my name. My Jesus reigns. My Jesus lives, my Jesus lives; Saved me and all my sin forgives. My Jesus lives.

Freeing us from darkness, Dying and rising from the dead. Living with the Father now, Yet he is among us; We are the body, he the head.

Large Print Hymnals

Large-print copies of the service are available for anyone in need – please ask an usher for a copy.

Wheelchair Area For your convenience, there are two areas set aside to accommodate members with wheelchairs, walkers, or other special space needs. Ushers are available to assist you to the following locations:

Halfway down the middle and side isles on the lectern side of church, there is a pew with wheelchair space on either end.

In the right half of the front row, also on the lectern side, there is a larger area with wheelchair space.

Parent Room Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” We love children and encourage their worship. Please don’t feel embarrassed if your child is restless during the service. You are among caring people who understand. If you feel that your children are distracting others from worship, you may take them to the entryway or a parent’s room is available. There is a closed-circuit TV in the room to watch & listen to the service. An usher can assist you in locating this room, also called the “Bible Class Room”. Attention Hearing Impaired Members Special receivers are available to help you hear the service. Ask one of our ushers for a receiver and return it to an usher after the service.

Pastoral Visits If you, a friend, or a family member, are in need of a pastor visit, please call the Emanuel office at 982-5444 or email us at [email protected] and let us know about the situation. We are not always aware of those that may be in need of a visit, so your help would truly be appreciated. Thank you for helping us help others!

The office will be open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. Book Fair A big thank-you to all who helped with last week’s book fair. Sales totaled $2176.11, and we were able to purchase $870.44 in books for our library from the fair. Emanuel Cookbooks With wedding and graduation season in full swing, please consider purchasing our “Be Our Guest” cookbook for your gift giving. The cost is $12.00 each or two books for $20.00. They are available in the Emanuel office or in the Welcome Center between church services. Blood Drive Update A warm thank you to the 35 people who attended the blood drive on May 5th. A great turnout on such a fine weather day! However, the length of our drives has a capacity for 48 donors, so there's still room for you. The next drive is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30th. Please consider donating, as the area's blood supply is very low right now. Also, summer is typically a low donation season in part to no high school drives being held. Many leave the area for vacations too. Not to mention all the fun activities summer offers which fills up schedules quickly. Don't assume someone else will do it. All blood types are needed. All donations are important. Stop by the Welcome Center to see Emanuel's Best Church Drive award for 2014. Our prize drawing winners for May were: Delores Dean, Jane Karpinski, Don Schmoll, and Dick Yerkey.

BUDGET TIME

Members of Emanuel:

Monday, May 18 is our Annual Meeting at which we will present for

approval our 2015-16 proposed budget. The 15-16 budget totals

$1,397,846.67 and is $69,252.83 or 5% more than the budget for this

current year

As in the budget for the three previous years we have included only

those items which we know are must haves. There are very few

budgeted expenditure items for any of our Boards as most of their

funding comes from our special restricted fund accounts and

donations.

Items in our budget which are increasing are the salary and wages

(steps plus 1%) recommended by our salary/wage committee and

approved by the Coordinating Council as well as related health

insurance and retirement benefit costs. Also increasing are our

contributions to FVLHS, WELS, the Hong Kong Mission, and the

Grenada Mission. Utilities and building maintenance have also

increased slightly as well as supplies and materials purchased for both

school and church.

We are anticipating general weekly offerings of $1,109,750 which is

more then we anticipate receiving this year. The difference, about

$25,000, we are hopeful will come from contributions made for our

building debt (balance 4/16/15 is $254,139) which hopefully will be

paid off by the end of March of 2016. In addition we are looking to

cash in approximately $14,000 in stock gifts to balance out the budget.

These stock gifts were given to the church with no specific use

requested. The budget as laid out above is balanced but not

necessarily as we would like. It will require much prayer and a deep

personal search of what each of us are contributing.

Beyond the budget presented we also need to pray about and

20 Page

consider the need for a third Pastor (estimated cost $78,000). The

work load for two Pastors in a congregation of 2600 souls is immense

(preaching, teaching, Bible Classes, weddings, funerals, home, and

hospital visitations) and needs to be addressed very soon. While we

have the WELS statistical report, showing lots of statistics for

membership and changes of all WELS congregations, for 2014, Pastor

Schulz provides the following information as we relate to the 37

congregations that have three or more pastors:

Emanuel is #7 on overall attendance per weekend.

Emanuel is #1 in Pastor/Baptized Member ration at 1300 per

pastor.

Emanuel serves more people on a given weekend than 70% of all

WELS circuits.

Copies of the complete budget, proposed nominees for election to the

boards, and WELS statistical data for seven area churches, including

Emanuel, that have two pastors or more, are available at both the

welcome center and the church office. If you have questions or

comments on any of this information, my contact information is in the

bulletin. Please call, e-mail, or leave a note in my church mail box.

USE YOUR HELP

In our planning, we found that we need:

o Adults to supervise a small number of

navigators.
