LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT

Call to Worship Text written by Bruce D Prewer. © B D Prewer 2006 used with permission of the author.

One: How does God speak? Not with a voice like mere mortals, yet God speaks in many ways— In the bountiful creation around us: “The midnight skies tell of God’s glory, the midday sun displays holy handiwork. Many: Each new day speaks God’s language, and night after night knows more than it can tell.” One: Yet it is the cross of Jesus where God speaks most profoundly: “The talk of the cross sounds absurd to those who think they are sophisticated, but for us who are being saved, it is the power of God.” Many: Amen! Let the way we speak and the way we think be acceptable in your sight O God our strength and our redeemer.

A Medley of Psalms, Hymns, and Songs: Immortal Invisible (Hymnal #12) Text: Walter Chalmers Smith, 1867, alt.; Music: Welsh folk melody; arr. Caniadau y Cyssegr, 1839 Immortal, invisible, God only wise In light inaccessible hid from our eyes Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might Thy justice, like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love To all, life thou givest, to both great and small In all life thou livest, the true life of all We blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree Then wither and perish; but naught changeth thee Thou reignest in glory, thou dwellest in light Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight All praise we would render; O help us to see ’Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Mighty to Save Words & Music: Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan Ev’ryone needs compassion Love that’s never failing Let mercy fall on me Ev’ryone needs forgiveness The kindness of a Savior The Hope of Nations chorus: Savior, He can move the mountains My God is mighty to save He is mighty to save Forever, author of salvation He rose and conquered the grave Jesus conquered the grave So take me as You find me All my fears and failures Fill my life again I give my life to follow Ev’rything I believe in Now I surrender chorus refrain: Shine your light and let the whole world see We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus Shine your light and let the whole world see We’re singing for the glory of the risen King chorus, refrain

Reading: Psalm 19:1–8 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat. The law of the LORD is perfect,

reviving the soul; the decrees of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes;

For the Beauty of the Earth (Hymnal #14, verses 1, 2, 4, 5) Text: Folliott Sanford Pierpoint, 1864, alt.; Music: Conrad Kocher, 1838; abr. William Henry Monk, 1861; harm. The English Hymnal, 1906

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies For the love which from our birth over and around us lies: refrain: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise For the wonder of each hour of the day and of the night Hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light: refrain For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child Friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild: refrain

For thyself, best gift divine to the world so freely given For that great, great love of thine, peace on earth and joy in heaven: refrain

Response: Spirit of the Living God (Hymnal #288) Text: Daniel Iverson, 1926; Music: Daniel Iverson, 1926

Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on me Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on me Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me Spirit of the living God Fall afresh on me

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18–25 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim

Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Closing Song: Hear Our Praises Words and Music by Reuben Morgan

May our homes be filled with dancing May our streets be filled with joy May injustice bow to Jesus As the people turn to pray refrain: From the mountain to the valley Hear our praises rise to You From the heavens to the nations Hear our singing fill the air May a light shine in the darkness As we walk before the cross May Your glory fill the whole earth As the water o’er the seas refrain 2x
