As babies, we quickly learn to recognize the voice of our parents and all parents remember the joy that we felt when our baby smiled when they heard our voice. As we grow older, we hear other voices. The voices of our pastors and teachers are next to be recognized and followed. Voices of our friends become more and more important as we get older. Voices of our bosses are ones that we recognize readily in our workplace. We also hear other voices, these voices are loosely categorized as media, but we definitely hear them in different ways—both as young people and adults. So many voices and so many messages, what voice do we listen to? Unfortunately, the voice that we often listen to is a voice that originates with the devil, the world, and our own sinful nature. This voice tells us that we need to elevate ourselves over others. This voice tells us that we can work our own way of salvation. This voice tells us that we must satisfy our own cravings. This voice is dead wrong and leads us to eternal death. Our passage speaks of another voice, the voice of our Good Shepherd. We hear his voice in the Bible. His voice shows us our sin, but most importantly, his voice shows us our Lord, Jesus. This Good Shepherd loves us so much that he lay down his life for us his sheep. There is no love that matches this love and that is why we listen to his voice. It is the voice of our loving God leading us to heaven. Let’s listen to his voice for our lives and share his story with the world. On , , please come to Nebraska Lutheran for a . The event runs from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and consists of ten congregation-run stations highlighting different aspects of the Reformation followed at 4:00 p.m. by a Reformation concert consisting of a youth choir and the NELHS choirs. We hope you can join us for this special day as we commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.

We Follow the Good Shepherd

John 10:3 The watchman opens the gate for him and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

Our theme for Nebraska Evangelical Lutheran High School and our associa-tion Lutheran elementary schools is “We Follow the Good Shepherd.” Our students, staff, and faculty will be hearing many messages like we see in the verse above. The following is an excerpt from our first week’s chapels.

What voice will you listen to?

All of us are trained from early on to listen for voices.

NELHS Silent Auction

Sunday, October 15th

1:30-4:30 p.m.

Please consider donating to and attending this event which helps fund so many important

extra-budget items. This year, the proceeds will go toward dorm roof repairs.

New student registra-tion is now open. Go to www.nelhs.org, click on “admissions,” and “US students” to find your way to our online registration. There is a significant tuition discount for new students if the registration occurs by November 30.

Our recruitment goal for next year is 40 new students by the start of school in August of 2018. If you know of a family whom we can contact to tell about our ministry, please let Administrator Mark Otte know. He can be reached at [email protected] or call 402-728-5236. Please pray for this goal.

The Solar Eclipse Bash was a huge success. Exact numbers are tough to figure out, but our kitchen staff served 938 hamburgers. Watching a wonder of God’s creation together was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

NELHS participated in the Yorkfest Parade on September 9. About 40 students and faculty marched in the parade and handed out promo-tional materials to the crowd. This parade is an important part of our strategy for recruiting more local students.

We welcome two new tutors to our faculty.

Sarah Schulte is from LaValle, WI, and is serving in our classrooms and the girls dorm.

Ben Olsen is from Spooner, WI, and is serving in the boys dorm and teaching Spanish.
