The American people have spoken, and
the fight is over. (Thank God!) While
this election season has been the most
divisive in our nation’s history, Chapter
91 is proud to say that our process was
deliciously uneventful. Every two years
we elect officers and board members,
and that happened again at our last
meeting in October. The transfer of
power happens at our first meeting in
January but we anticipate a peaceful
transition. The chapter is lucky to have
such quality people willing to serve.

As most of you know, there has been a taildragger in Hangar K for the past several
years. It is a J-6 Karatoo named “Blue Diamond” and has been for sale for the past few
years. It was probably priced too high and was not advertised. Two months ago I
received a call from the owner who lives in Florida. He said if I could find someone
who would want Blue Diamond for $15,000 he would sell it. I spoke with chapter
member Keith Raymer about it and he agreed to list it on his aircraft sales web site and
since I was a co-builder of the airplane, my phone number was listed for information.
Two or three weeks later I got a call from Joel Marquardt who lives on Center
Island in the state of Washington. Joel sounded interested and the more we talked, the
more interested he got. On October 21he arrived at MCI where he rented a car from
Enterprise. We met Saturday morning at Lee's Summit Airport. It was love at first
sight! After a lot of coordination with the owner and cooperation from Bill Gill, Bill
was able to sign Joel off for flight in the Karatoo. On Monday, October 24, Joel took
off for Washington. Because of the distance and adverse weather, it took four days to
get there. I had checked with him on a daily basis to monitor his progress. I was
pleased he reported the plane was flying flawlessly.
One day when I called Joel he said, “Larry, I have a problem and can you help me
again?” The problem was that Joel had turned in his rental car at Enterprise in Lee's
Summit and had left a bank pouch containing all the bills of sale, his check book and
some sunglasses in the glove box. Joel said he had called Enterprise numerous times
and could not get a lot of interest. So, on Friday, October 28, I went to Enterprise and
explained how important it was we get this bank pouch. One of the employees took it
on himself to run down the location of the car. He contacted the current renter and on
Monday, October 31 I was able to put the pouch in the mail to Joel.
So, Joel is happy with the airplane. I am happy it has found a home where it will
be cared for and well used. I want to thank Keith Raymer and Bill Gill for their help in
this endeavor. Joel says he has never met a more friendly or helpful bunch than Chapter
91 members in his life. I told him it's easily explained: General aviation people are
family!

EAA CHAPTER 91
MINUTES OF THE MEETING
October 17, 2016
The meeting of EAA Chapter 91 was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by President Larry Young in the
chapter meeting room at Lee's Summit Airport. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by
Doug Ege. As Larry was still recovering from his recent back surgery, he had not been able to meet
all guests and invited any guests to introduce themselves. Those included Mike Ryker, John Stoll,
and John Faulkenberry.
The minutes of the September 19, 2016 meeting were approved as printed in the October newsletter.
Pam Ratliff provided the balance on hand in the chapter checking account. She also offered chapter
caps and patches or could order chapter badges, polo shirts or sweatshirts. She passed a sign-in
sheet to record attendance.
Mike Dooley also passed a sheet for interested members to sign up for CPR and AED training. Mr.
Mike McGraw had donated an AED with the stipulation the chapter purchase a second unit to be
mounted outside for all-airport accessibility. Mike Dooley had purchased the necessary items to
bring the AED up to date and mounted it in the chapter kitchen. A raffle for 2 paintings was being
held to help finance the purchase of a second. Raffle tickets would be available until the drawing,
February 11, 2017.
The next chapter meeting would be Monday, November 21, 2016 and Charles Gosselin announced
the program would be presented by Larry Denning on “Flying the Connie.” The next board meeting
was scheduled for Monday, November 7, 2015. Announcements included announcing member Ed
Baucom had been admitted to Centerpoint hospital with the flu, and an obituary for former member
Robin Lightfoot which had appeared in the newspaper.
Larry Young read the nominees on the ballot for officers and board members. Each was given a
couple of minutes to explain his interest in serving on the board. Ballots were distributed for voting,
collected and tallied by Keith Schult, Nancy Inderwiesen and Rick Beckman.
Young Eagles coordinator, Chris St. Germain, said the last 2016 event Saturday, October 15 had
begun with questionable weather, but ended with a good count. Young Eagle rallies with pancake
breakfasts would likely resume in April of 2017.
Following a break, Phil Brackenbury won the 50-50 drawing and donated his portion to the Young
Eagles fund. The results of the election were announced: president Mike Dooley, vice-president
Chris St. Germain, secretary Pam Ratliff and treasurer Phil Ishmael. The board of directors includes
Mark Burrow, Chuck Gosselin, Bob Gurski and Paul Rodriguez. The transition would begin at the
January, 2017 meeting.
The program was presented by Robert Baslee of Airdrome Aeroplanes. His company designs and
sells kits for WWI style airplanes at his airport near Holden, Missouri. The meeting adjourned 8:50

OCTOBER’S YOUNG EAGLES
NEW OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS
The Young Eagles season has come to an end and Chapter 91 did very well again this year. Our total numbers were down for the year thanks to a couple of weekends with weather problems, and while that was highly unusual, our guests still had a great time. Chris St. Germain will brief us on the final numbers, but he wants to thank everyone who participated in any way in this year’s events. There’s no way around it: Chapter 91 members are truly the best of the best! Thank you for all you do.
The picture on the left shows our new leadership. Back row, left to right: Mark Burrow; Chris St. Germain, VP; Mike Dooley, president; Charles Gosselin; and Phil Ishmael, treasurer. Front row, left to right: Pam Ratliff, secretary; Paul Rodriguez and Bob Gursky. Those without titles are board members. The picture on the right shows Nancy Inderwiesen with the legend himself, Larry Young: president for the last 200 years and Mr. Chapter 91. Thank you, Larry, for everything you have done for Chapter 91. You have made us what we are, and we appreciate it.

LAST MONTH’S PROGRAM
CHAPTER 91’S WEBSITE IS BACK ONLINE
When chapter member Larry Rhoads decided to build a replica of the WW-I era Sopwith Baby, there was noticeable interest. Even in our modern day, there is still fascination and nostalgia for the early aviation from the nineteen hundreds. To scratch that itch, Bob Baslee from nearby Holden, Missouri developed a business of designing, building and selling kits of some of these memorable vintage airplanes. Bob says his designs require no special skills to build, and are very affordable.
The Bob’s complete line covers close to twenty airplanes including numerous Nieuports; a couple of Sopwiths; and several Fokkers, including the EIII Eindecker and even the Red Baron’s glamorous, triple-winged Fokker DR1. Depending on the airplane, they are available in 3/4, 80 percent and full scale sizes. Ultralights? Yeah, the Bleriot is one as are the cute little Dream Classic and Dream Fantasy.
On more than one occasion, Bob was asked to create replica airplanes for unusual situations. For example, he has built models for National Geographic and several movies including “Amelia,” “Gang of Aces,” and “Flyboys.”
Being nearby makes Airdrome Aeroplanes very attractive for local builders and enthusiasts, and apparently Bob’s genius with design simplicity and rock-solid stability is well known everywhere. You can see a lot more at his Website over at www.airdromeaeroplanes.com so go take a look. And when Larry finishes that Sopwith Baby, we’ll be out in force, watching him make a strafing run.
Recently, James Perkins, our webmaster, notified us that our website was going to be down. Apparently the company providing the server was changing owners and the new business strategy did not furnish the kind of service we need. James had to scramble since he has more than our site to deal with, but somehow, he came through and EAACHAPTER91.ORG is back online. We’re not sure exactly how he did it, but James is cleverly adroit at this sort of thing, and somehow made it happen. We’re grateful we were not offline very long. Thank you, James!

NOVEMBER’S PROGRAM
For the last ten years, Larry Denning has been the chief pilot for the Airline History Museum located at Charles Wheeler Downtown Airport in Kansas City. Larry’s aviation background is extensive, including flying for TWA which was later folded into American Airlines. He has flown, and was a designated examiner for DC9s, MD-80s 757s, 767s and the L-1011 among others. Larry’s airline flight experience includes extensive trips over the North Atlantic route.
But he’s also an accomplished homebuilder, proving that by winning the very first Grand Champion award for kit-built airplanes with his immaculate Christen Eagle in 1984. All in all, Jim has some 27,000 flying hours and is also an A&P/IA. He has accumulated more than 100 hours in the Lockheed Constellation and is one of only three peoples qualified in all three of the Connie’s seats. With that pedigree, you can see why we’re thrilled to have Jim speak at our November meeting about flying the Connie. Here’s your chance to learn more about what this level of flying is all about from a guy who’s been there. Be sure you don’t miss this one; you’ll never forgive yourself.
CHALLENGE AIR FETED AT MKC IN SEPTEMBER
Challenge Air is a national organization that takes special needs kids up for local flights. The event featured an enthusiastic high school cheerleader squad who hailed the kids on their way to and from each flight. The youngsters were made to feel very special and the whole event was outstanding. These kids were fantastic! But they need more pilots. Want to help? I swear you won’t regret it.
CPR TRAINING COMING TO CHAPTER 91 MEMBERS
Saving lives is always a priority – especially when and where lots of people gather. For seven months each year, Chapter 91 hosts monthly Young Eagles rallies and breakfasts. Each draws hundreds of attendees so it’s probably past time that we upgrade our skills in the unlikely though possible event someone needs help.
Not long ago, Mike McGraw donated an AED unit to the chapter. Translated into normal English, an AED is a heart defibrillator. That unit is now housed in the kitchen at our meeting space, and the chapter plans to purchase another unit for use closer to the hangar areas. But what good is a lifesaving device if we don’t know how to use it?
On Friday, December 2 and Saturday December 3, all chapter members will have a chance to learn not only how to use the AEDs, but also how to provide life-giving CPR. You may pick your session – Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday morning, 9 to 11 a.m. The classes will be taught by Lee’s Summit High School’s nurse, Helen Enright, and ably assisted by our own Nancy Inderwiesen, BSN. So how do you get your name on the list? Well, that’s being worked out as you read this. Those final details will be announced at our November meeting, Monday November 21. We are negotiating with the school district to waive the $3.50 fee but that, too will be announced at our normal chapter meeting.
If you’ve never had CPR training, or if it’s been a long time ago, please adjust your schedule to attend one of these training sessions. If demand exceeds supply, we’ll work to put together more sessions, but that will be decided sometime in the future depending on how these classes go. We truly hope no one ever needs this level of assistance at any of our events, but as the old saying goes, it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
CUB SCOUTS MEET AT GRAIN VALLEY AIRPORT
Kyle White sent a photo and description of his Cub Scout pack’s activity last June where the boys meet at 3GV. They get an airport tour and see his Bonanza and Cub. Then they cook hamburgers on the grill. The kids really have fun. John Ohrazda furnishes a handful of balsawood airplanes which the boys put together and hold a flying contest. What fun!
