Give love on Christmas Day!

When The Jackson 5 first sang “Give Love on Christmas Day” in the 70’s, we could not help but agree that we made Christmas lists, bought special gifts, and took time to be kind to everyone. And whether he was anyone on the street or a man who had everything, he would be happy to know that someone cared or loved him. Love can be given in different ways. It can be through gifts, quality time, acts of service, words of affection, and physical touch. On the Christmas Eve of 1986, Andreas was one of the saddest Swiss Guards in the papal palace. It was his first Christmas away from home. Moreover, he would not be able to celebrate Christmas with the other guards because of his assignment which was to guard the pope’s private apartment in the hours before Midnight Mass. Andreas thought of his family in Switzerland. Christmas Eve was his favorite holiday. He imagined smelling his mother’s roast cooking, seeing his father decorate the tree, hearing the carols, and listening to the conversations of his siblings. He was the youngest of six children. Before his duty, Andreas got in line with the other guards to make their calls home. When he spoke to his father, he did pretty well to hide his emotions. He was aware that there was a line of men standing behind him, watching and listening. But when his mother was

on the phone and cried because her “baby” wasn’t home for Christmas, he could not help it but shed some tears. He hung up the phone, ran to his room, put on his uniform, and headed out for his solitary Christmas Eve guarding the papal apartment. It was dark and lonely up there, and he was very sad. At about ten o’clock that evening, Andreas got a call from an officer informing him that Pope John Paul was leaving to celebrate Midnight Mass and would use his exit. In a few minutes, a light flooded his post; then the pope came out. The pontiff paused about twenty feet from Andreas and looked at him for some time without saying anything. Then he said, “You’re new! What’s your name?” Andreas told him, who came closer, peering into his reddened eyes. The Holy Father immediately understood what was going on and said, “This is your first Christmas away from home, isn’t it?” The guard replied in the affirmative, barely holding back his tears as he answered. Again, the pope stepped closer, took his hand with one hand, held his elbow with the other, looked at him and said, “Andreas, I want to thank you for the sacrifice you are making for the Church. I will pray for you during Mass this evening.” That was all Andreas needed! Someone had noticed his pain, someone had cared, and that someone was the pope himself. Imagine that - the leader of a billion Catholics was sensitive enough to perceive the emotions of a twenty-year-old guard! In the moment, he felt comforted. This touching story should move us to give love to others because “what the world needs is love. Yes, the world needs your love ... (that is why) no greater gift is there than LOVE!”

nobleman who was a widower 40 years her senior. She considered these nineteen years of her wedded life to be the darkest moments in her life. This was because not only did her husband have a most difficult character but was misanthropic, unattractive, demanding and possessive. Then there were her children – two dying in infancy and the eldest who while he survived only till he was 16 years was always frail and delicate. It was only the fact that even from her younger days Constance who loved God dearly and relied completely on His grace that she was able to cope with what fate dealt her. Though devastated she was able to cope with heroic patience and constant prayer. It is thanks to her spiritual director who guided her that she was able to entrust her “brokenness” to the welcoming arms of Jesus. Finally when her husband died on Christmas Day in 1854, Constance was left a young widow of 38 years who was extremely wealthy. In a quandary what to do with the rest of her life she recalled the dying words of her son Carol, “Don’t be afraid, mother, God will give you many children.” It took her months of prayer and contemplation of the Sorrowful Mother before she was able to discern the path of God’s plan for her. Maybe it was to give herself to other children through maternal love and openhearted service.

TRUST THE GRAND DESIGN

One of the most important questions we can ever ask ourselves is, “Does life have meaning over and above our own designs?” Does life have purpose beyond our making? How we answer this question has significant ramifications for our happiness and peace of mind. Is there a divine blueprint for how life unfolds or are we just random players in a blind universe where everything happens by chance? Micah is clearly a prophet of the grand design. He announces that God has great plans for the little town of Bethlehem that will have wondrous implications even “to the ends of the earth.” The reading from Hebrews assumes that God has great designs for the world in Jesus Christ and encourages our participation in those designs by submission to God’s will. Elizabeth, in the reading from Luke, proclaims Mary as “blessed” because of her trust in the fulfilment of God’s plans for her. Believing in a “grand design” or trusting in “the big picture” is not always easy to do. There are times when we are in love, or when everything is going our way, and we feel that all’s well in God’s world. We may look up into the clear skies on a romantic evening and the dazzle of stars reinforces our belief that, “there must be something behind all this.” But there are other times when this belief is severely challenged. Infants die of genetic disorders; children perish in floods or from famine. Innocent bystanders are gunned down by a madman, and calamities befall the most underserving. We get sick for no reason, lose a job without cause, watch a loved one pine away and die in the prime of life. Life can become so filled up with

confusion and problems that all we see is chaos. And yet we are assured by the readings today that there is a grand design. The problem is we don’t want to accept “the big picture” in its entirety. We don’t want to believe that God’s will embraces the bad with the good, that everything that happens is part of God’s design, whether we understand how that can be or not. If we accept God’s will, however, we need to accept it wholly, without breaking it into pieces according to our particular demands and expectations. We gain great peace of mind when we embrace the belief that there is a divine blueprint for the universe that is good, loving, true, and perfect. Effective living is empowered by a belief that we are part of a “big picture,” that there is a purpose and fulfilment for each of us in the grand scheme of things. With Mary we are “blessed” in our trust of the fulfilment. Our joy is increased the more we accept God’s will in its fullness. This means that we accept both the sweet

and the sour of life as part of God’s plan, that even tragedy has its purpose even when it is not presently clear to us what that purpose might be. As Christmas approaches and we celebrate God’s grand design unfolding in the birth of Jesus, trust that God has a grand design for your life too. God willed for you to be, and your life has a special part to play in God’s plan. Pray, as did Christ, “Lo, I have come to do thy will, O God.” Embrace God’s will as fully as you can. Say to yourself often: “Everything in my life has meaning.” Everything! You are never a “victim,” and nothing happens to you purely by chance. Accept your sorrows as well as your joys, your suffering as well as your successes, as all part of God’s will. Your life continues to unfold magnificently with God as Director.

4th Sunday of Advent

Starting small she would first assist the poor especially the orphans. So she took two motherless children into her mansion. She was challenged further by Jesus to see Him in the faces of the poor, the downtrodden and the orphans. She decided that she would devote herself and her estate to all the orphans especially the children of peasants who would be brought up and trained for life on the land. To do this she sold her precious jewels to open an orphanage. She then called on her faithful friends to help her. When people criticised her and called her crazy she merely replied, “So I am by the lunacy of the Cross.” Then in 1857 Constanza took the momentous step of making her religious vows. She chose the names of Paola Elizabetta in honor of two saintly widows: Paula of Rome and Elizabeth of Hungary. A few months later when several dedicated young women joined her on December 8, 1857 Constanza, now Sr. Paola Elizabetta “Mother of many orphans” founded the Holy Family of Nazareth, an order devoted to strengthening families in rural areas. A few years later in 1863 when her early project increased and prospered she cofounded a brothers’ branch of the congregation called Religious of the Holy Family. Because in these days people paid little attention to agricultural training and farmers it is thanks to this institute that Italy owes a lot. All the orphans cared by these two congregations came to be known as “sons and daughters of St. Joseph,” as Sr. Paola’s devotion to St. Joseph was outstanding. Because of her fraility caused by a slight spinal deformity, and increasing heart trouble she died in her sleep in the early hours of Christmas Eve 1865 at the early age of forty-nine. It is because Paola was inspired by the Holy Family of Nazareth that she strove to make her religious houses “truly Christian families united in dynamic love, harmonious fellowship and strong faith.” How badly needed are institutes like this all over the world today! She was officially declared a saint of the Church on March 19, 1950.

SSAP Christmas InvitationSSAP and Convento employees will have a Christmas celebration on Monday Dec. 21, 2015. Parish priest Fr. Reu Jose C. Galoy, OFM wish employees to experience an authentic advent spirit of sharing through the following program: Part 1 of the celebration is a morning outreach program from 8:30AM – 11:00AM wherein employees interact with 50 male and 50 female inmates of the Makati City Jail (MCJ). The activity starts off at the MCJ, with a Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Reu. Breakfast follows then the distribution of gifts donated by the employees. Part 2 of the program is the employees Chistmas party at the Social hall, SSAP parish center fromt 12:30PM – 3:30PM. Employees’ family members are invited, together with the collectoras and staff of the Catholic Women’s League, Catholic Women’s Club, Comtinuing Catholic Development and Thrift Shop personnel.(Submitted by Belen R.
