YouTube: Left handed Tunisian Crochet Videos

LadyPhiddler said:on May 14, 2010 04:14 PM ET

YouTube ... I can't imagine life without video instructions, instantly, on so many topics. And, it's free!!

I wanted to change the yarn color on my sample Tunisian crochet item, so I searchedthrough YouTube.com While reviewing some of the videos, this one stood out from all therest:Wanzy's Crochet and Knit Stophttp://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Wanzycrochet#g/uWanzycrochet's Channelhttp://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Wanzycrochet#g/u

She's a LEFTY, but that didn't stop me from watching the video. I can turn it around inmy head. Wanzy, the lady that presents the video, is calm, gently precise, and invisiblyencouraging. Well, that's my take on it!

Short of her having a right-handed twin sister, she's perfect !!!

I'm trying (first time) to paste the YouTube video inside of this message. It might notwork, and AARP's site doesn't allow any edit features currently, so if it works, good, if not, ignore it. *wink*

Tunisian & Squirrel: My first attempt at tunisian, and our little squirrel friend

LadyPhiddler said:on May 13, 2010 04:09 AM ET

First of all, I must say that I really like this tunisian (afghan) stitch. The product feelssoft, like (ahem) knitted items!

(slaps fingers for typing that word!!)

Here's the item, which will be given to Paul to use in his refurbished bathroom having newcolors of tan, brown and blue. I hope he likes it, if not, I'll take it!! *hahahaha*

With no pattern as a guide, this is myfirst attempt at tunisian (afghan)crochet. It's kind of a blend of knittingand crocheting.

I used cotton worsted weight yarn anda #8 (=G) afghan hook which is about16" long. I watched the YouTube videothat MFROST provided (I believe it wasMFROST) to see the basic cast on, andstitches. A day later I gave it a try. Igot the casting on done and workingthem off was a piece of cake.

Putting the loops back on the hook wasnot dedicated to memory, so I insertedthe hook into the center of the lowerstitch (between the bars) reachedthrough to the back side, yarned-over,pulled through the center stitch,yarned-over and did it again, andagain, all the way across: 15 stitches inall.

Page 9: We began as a group on an AARP.org bulletin board … began as a group on an AARP.org bulletin board Crochet: Legal Hookers Now, we will soon have our own bulletin board: LegalHookersCrochet.com

I had to undo a lot of rows and do them right again. The edging is sc around, then dc, ch-1, dc, to make those little boxes.

Secondly, we hava a visitor at our home, almost daily now.

This little fellow came by just after I put out somefresh, dry, food for the birds. I love watching himas he chatters at the cats, then thumps his hindlegs to scare them. He's been known to jumpfrom the upper deck to the ground, then hesqueaks... ouch! Now, he has a better escaperoute: He runs to the area where the BBQ sitsand then he JUMPS onto the tree branches andscampers away!

But, better yet, in the summer when it's really, really hot... he cools down by laying flat on hisbelly, on the deck, with all of his legs stretchedout on the sides. It looks as if he's beensmashed. He's just cooling down! What a cutie.

Tunusian (Afghan) Crochet - Easy Throw

LadyPhiddler said:on May 5, 2010 02:05 AM ETedited on May 5, 2010 02:14 AM ET

Greetings:

Isn't this pretty? It looks soft, and it feels soft, as soft as knit when it drapes.

It's Tunisian Crochet, the type ofcrochet that our MFROST used to makethat exquisite tank top and shortsleeved sweater. This would be a goodone to practice on. You could make itsmaller for a bed-scarf, or for a babyblanket, but good for practice.

The FREEPATTERN is atCoats & Clarkswebsite shownas TunisianColor Square Throw.LP

(Note: I have about 4 more days before I'll be finished with thewebsite updating... I miss your comments with each otheralready!)

I don't remember the last time I boughtstore wash rags. I don't use a pattern. I make a chainand just begin. There is a balance to each of the ragsthough....... a pattern is created in the end.

My other hobby is growing violets. So I thought Iwould include one in my picture.

I have collected crochet books since the late 60's and I can honestly say that I do nothave a particular favorite ...... but if nailed down, I guess it would be my Irish Crochetwhich I cannot put my finger on at the moment. Also the Annie's Attic collection of Barbiedoll victorian dresses from the late 70's and her crocheted necklaces, bracelets andearrings.

The oldest book I have is from 1899 with sleeping caps, crocheted yokes and lampshadesetc.

UFO

sewbee42 said:on May 3, 2010 10:05 AM ET

For the first time, I have a UFO! I had started the Lion Brand Tamir afghan. I loved theidea it was made in small rounds, then stitched together, perfect for Texas summerweather hooking.

Then, I found a crochet teacher at a LYS, and finally started the cover sweater from theMay 2009 Crochet Mag. I have the back almost finished.

So, what are your thoughts on UFOs? Do you ever finish? Do they nag at you (my afghandoes)? How many can you comfortably live with, there is just too many patterns and toomany beautiful yarns in our world! Sandy

It looks complex, but if you visit theWool Eaters web page, you'll see thatit's really easy.

Nostepinne - Winding your yarn into balls with center pull. Nice for left overs

LadyPhiddler said:on April 27, 2010 07:09 PM ET

Greetings:

It's another V-8 (smacks forehead) moment, and this time the cleverness comes fromScandinavia. Just imagine a ball, or rather a donut type ball of yarn to preserve your left-over skeins. Here's what the Talking Crochet Newsletter says:

"The word "nostepinne" (sometimes spelled "nostepinde") originates from Scandinavianwords meaning "nest stick." It is literally a stick that helps you make little "nests" or ballsof yarn. A straight large(size Q or larger) crochethook makes a perfectnostepinne.

"With practice, you cancreate flat stackable yarncakes similar to thosecreated with a yarnwinder, or you mayprefer to make round orfootball-shaped balls. Thetechnique can be a littleawkward at first, buttruly, with practice ofabout five or six yarnballs, you'll be muchmore confident.Confidence is important!Wind the balls fairly fastand with confidence, andyou'll find that a level of comfort will come more easily.

"Below are some links to instructions for using a nostepinne. To use a large crochet hookinstead, simply place a slipknot over the head of your crochet hook and tighten it downinto the "mouth" of the hook. Then, wind the yarn onto the end of the hook in the samemanner as a wooden nostepinne is wound. "

Here's how to do it (YouTube) ...a Q hook works nicely, too.

This is the FUNNY one... worth a good laugh!

As you'll see, Nicki onlywanted to make a gift togive to her children'steachers at the end of theirschool year.

She made tubes of yarn, butthey were too flimsy bythemselves. She braidedthem together. She madean Irish rose, added someribbon, and finished the lastfew stitches as her husbanddrove the family to theschool ceremonies.

But, since it is almost Springtemperatures my freshly painted toe-nailssaid, "We want fluffy-flop-flops", and therest of my fat body said, "We want themwith 2.5-inch heels so we appear to betaller, and slightly thinner."

I obeyed my body and my toes. Hope thisphoto is enough of a nudge for you to buysome $5.00 (at K-Mart) Joe Boxer flip-flopsfor your pleasure, too.

Greetings:

It's probably because my husband and I develop commercial websites that we are oftenasked how to build a website, as if it's like making a pillowcase.

It's not easy, it takes a lot of expensive software and a lot of knowledge with ever-changing Internet rules. The asking party is left without any do-it-yourself solutions, because, until now, there just hasn't been any options worth using or having ... that areFREE.

Today I tested a website that offers free sub-websites, commonly known as "Blogs". Youhave visited one, too. Do you recall visiting CraftiBlog.wordpress.comhttp://craftiblog.wordpress.com/2009/07/06/2009-07-06-crocheted-flower-embellishments/ where I showed you a photograph of a 'card' embellished with a largecrocheted flower? Sure you do. That was one.

Well, (get to the point LP... ok) You can have your own BLOG site athttp://www.wordpress.com for FREE. Once you register and confirm the registration, then they provide a 'dashboard' webpage where you begin to build your blog. If you'readventurous, give it a try!

Enjoy!

If I may, I'd like to suggest another site where you can build and maintain a blog, also forfree. It's one that I'd been using since 2006 and have been enjoying the adventure.

It is Blogger located at www.blogger.com

As with other blogging sites, it does require registration, which is also free. What I likeabout this site is that it walks you through the steps of blogging from the initial setup andas you progress along the way. This is one that had been recommend to me by anacquaintance who stated that it is a good site for beginning bloggers.

Wrist pain

willshouse said:on April 20, 2010 01:30 PM ET

Hello all, I seem to remember seeing some exercises directed at fighting carpal tunnelsyndrome somewhere in the last few months. I've been able to find some on the 'net butnot the ones I remember. Was that possibly on this site?

The last several days, my left wrist has been causing me some problems (yes, I'm aleftie!). I can't seem to find those exercises when I need them. I obviously don't knowfor sure that CTS is the problem but I'm sure the exercises would probably help, regardless of what my problem is. It hasn't stopped my hooks from moving yet but I fearit might lead to that if the pain continues.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? If so, how did you handle it?

Thanks, T W

Recycling those pesky plastic grocery bags

Farway said:on April 17, 2010 06:21 PM ET

Finally finished my latest project - a door mat for the deck. Had tons of yellow grocerybags with red printingon them, so cut them into strips and slip knotted them together tomake plarn. Using a N hook I chained until I thought it would be wide enough and thensingle crocheted until it looked like door mat size. Every time I started running short onplarn, just cut up more grocery bags and kept on crocheting. Now I need to get rid of thewhite bags with blue printing, but can't think of what to make. Anyone have any ideas? -Liz @ FarWay

Christmas Crochet Ideas Please..

LadyPhiddler said:on April 14, 2010 03:48 PM ET

I know Christmas is a long ways from April, but I was thinking about Christmas cards andhow disgusting they are. I do use them to make small boxes, and I do mail them tofriends, but .... but .... but what if....

what if....

I crocheted some thread one-sided (flat, not3-D) snowflakes, or stars, starched them, added a bit of that glitter face polish stuffthat I see the young gals wearing (help meout here... what's it called?), and then placedthem onto a piece of cardstock?

Of course, my mind is playing with the manydifferent colors of the 1/16" matting board, with the center cut out just a bit larger thanthe star... and the star suspended from atiny sparkly thread... I can imagine the'card' made in such a way that it wouldbecome a 'stand' for the star...

Can you see that in your mind? What doyou imagine?

What are your thoughts?

LadyPhiddler said:on April 14, 2010 01:50 PM ET

Greetings:

Post your "stash yarn" ideas, too!

While I was looking at another LeisureArtsLibrary.com patterns, I came across this onetitled "Baker's Basket" which they offer for sale at $1.99.http://www.leisureartslibrary.com/cart/pc/Baker-s-Basket-Crochet-Pattern-28p773.htm

I love baskets and this one uses threestrands of yarn and a big Q-hook.

That made me think of Sadie andNanciVette at the beginner level becausethese are easy stitches (single crochet) andthey are very quick to finish. Plus, they arean instant success. Make many of thesebaskets and use them as gifts, or fill themwith homemade treats... endlesspossibilities.

THEN, it occured to me!! My large stash ofleft over sport weight baby yarns, and myleftover worsted weight yarns. I just hatemaking granny squares out of them. Icould use that left over yarn to make thesebaskets.

Of course, I'd probably have to buy a skein (or two) of a base color. Yeah. *nodding*

Thinking about maybe getting back to some baby items or a lacy shawl, or maybe justdoilies for change.

Today is Tues. so I'll be with my Warm Up America group this afternoon. Lots of squaresto put together. Finished projects to sort and decide where to donate. Been making lotsof baby items, lately too.

Crochet: Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse - Spiral Scrubbies

LadyPhiddler said:on April 12, 2010 02:01 AM ETedited on April 12, 2010 03:42 AM ET

Greetings:

I have to wash my face twice a day before applying medication for rosecia. The terryclothwash cloths are just too rough for my facial skin. I didn't like using the cotton cosemiticmakeup pads because it was just too wasteful of a nice resource, cotton. Do youremember your parents, and grandparents, telling you:

"Waste not, want not."

Using cotton worsted weight yarn, I made some face scrubbies. I especially like the spiralscrubbie that measures about 3.5" across. Here's a sample photograph.

Changing yarn colors, alternating rows, gives theselittle delights a happy circus attitude! *hehehe*

This time I'm giving you a link to a YouTube videoso you can see the pattern being made. Use andreuse = Waste not, want not. Things really don'tchange much, do they?

If you do not have high-speed net service, thenhere is a link to a webpage with the written crochetpattern.

One other thing...

I machine wash these scrubbies inside of a white nylon mesh washing bag (I got it at theArmy Surplus Store for $4.00). The bag has a nice drawstring and a plastic string-clamp. These scrubbies aresmaller than socks and you know how your washer anddryer love to eat them!

Here's a nylon mesh laundry bag which is sold throughAmazon.com for $10.

Addition of other crafts: Ok, with a request

LadyPhiddler said:on April 3, 2010 02:18 AM ETedited on April 3, 2010 02:19 AM ET

*laughing*

Not everyone is a linear thinker (step by step process following a cycle of establishedprocesses) and I found out that lateral thinking fits crafters and crafting much better sinceit is an indirect approach to challenges, which allows unexpected solutions. Creativity'sspawning grounds: lateral thinking.

That basket challenge really opened my eyes to the creative pleasures. I had no idea theamount of confusion, submission, reaction, random thoughts, disjointed ideas, and thenthe pleasure that you must have a lot of the time by having creation happening throughyou.

Most of you, I suppose, enjoy many different crafts. (ok... it's ok to laugh, I'm laughingtoo!) Please allow this old 'linea thinking' gal to expand into your lateral world. How?

Please feel free to post your other crafts here. I ask this for the sake of order: Type thecraft's name as the first word in the topic area, example:

QUILTS: Floating teddy bear wall hanging.

BEADS: Adding beads to a lampshade.

The same 'active participation' is a must for the members of this group.

Alternative to chain stitichs at the start of a new row

Farway said:on March 31, 2010 03:02 AM ET

I always thought that the chain stitches at the beginning of a new row were not asfinished looking as they could be. Found this video (located about half way down thepage) that gives a alternative method. It took a few times to really understand themethod, but it looks so much better than just using the chain stitches, I am switchingover. The video also has some great ideas on tidying up yarn tails and changing colors. The site also has a really nice tea cozy pattern she says fools everyone into thinking isknit. Hope you give it a try. - Liz @ Farway

AARP Bulletin Board Conversion - General Information

As the owner of this group, I have received an e-mail about the upcoming changes to the AARPBulletin Board. Their e-mail does not give a specific date for the change-over, but does address thenew 'type' of group settings available.

To give you clairing, this group's setting is "Request Only". Under the current system only membersof this group may participate in the discussions. The non-members of this group may see ourposted topics but they cannot participate. The new system will be different. Read the entire e-mailshown below:

Earlier this month, we sent you an email message regarding the upcoming changes to the new AARP.orgOnline Community. In that message, we asked you to change your group's privacy setting from"invitation-only" to "request-only". Unfortunately, the "request-only" setting does not afford you thehighest level of privacy during the transition. In other words, until the new site launches, any"request-only" group will be visible and accessible to all users. In order to maintain your highest levelof privacy, your "invitation-only."

The new Online Community will feature "public" and "provate" groups only. "Invitation-only" or"request-only" groups will be designated as a "private" group at launch. The change is automaticallydone for you.

A note about "private" groups: Please note that the group name and description will be vieable to allcommunity visitors, but the group members anddiscussions will remain private.

Private settings in public groups will remain the same.

Sincerely,

Online Community Team

We will deal with it as it happems. I'm too busy right now finding new crochet things to post here.*muuhahahahah*

I stumbled onto this recycled coin purse made from a discardedsweater. It's lovely. I know it's not crochet, but it certainly couldbe used on a worn out crocheted item.

Do you have a cherished item that was made years ago and hasseen better days? Are pieces of it still intact? Could you affix thepieces to a lining and then make a coin purse out of it?

Crochet: Care and Maintenance of your Crochet Intruments

LadyPhiddler said:on March 27, 2010 02:31 AM ETedited on March 27, 2010 03:02 AM ET

Hooks, needles, scissors, magnifying glass, hands.... yes hands!

You tune up your car. You have your funace checked. You empty your vacuum cleaner bag/tank.You clean the refrigerator. Maybe you oil the door hinges and the latch mechanism, but how do youmaintain your crochet instruments?

I hadn't thought much about it until I started buying Boye hooks (made in USA only) on E-Bay.Wow... they were vintage, great quality, but they needed a good tune-up.

TUNE-UP YOUR TOOLS:

I gave them a bath in baby shampoo and fairly hot water. Then I rubbed them dry with a softcotton towel. Some still needed attention with rough spots. I used a tiny bit of Wright's SilverPolish between my thumb and index finger, and gently removed the rough material. I have finesteel wool, but I didn't need to use it.

I rubbed them all down with a very thin coat of baby oil. (I use that on my dry stainless steel sinksafter I've cleaned them ... smells great and the sinks look like new)...

WASH YOUR HANDS:

I don't pick up my hooks or crochet project, until I have washed the oil and hand lotion from myhands, and dried my hands, too. We do need our body's oil on our hands, but over time that oilbuilds up on our hooks. When that oil is mixed with our salty sweat it causes corrosion on metal. All of that can make our hooking into a tug-of-war, and it soils the material, especially thread, andall white color materials.

Washing with soap and warm water, followed by a towel drying, is better than the alcohol rubs toremove the oils and salts. If you live in a humid area, or you're nervous (hahaha), put a little babypowder (smells sooo good) onto the palms of your hands and work it into the valley area of yourfingers.

USE YOUR HEAD... THE SCALP AREA:

When hand sewing, or embroidering, have you ever had to tug a needle in and out of the fabric. Ihate that. My mom showed me how to eliminate that. Rub the needle on your scalp at the base ofyour hair shafts. Don't poke yourself, just rub the needle sideways. You can do the same thing withyour hooks, too!

STORAGE:

I live in an arid area of the USA (near Lake Tahoe in California). Humidity is about 27 in thesummer, so it is not an issue for my hooks. I do keep my hooks in hook cases, each hook has it'sown place in the case. Why? So I can find them! *hahah* How do YOU store your hooks to keepyour them free from the damage of humidity?

C'mon... chime in !

Crochet: How do you hold, or wrap, your yarn/thread in your non-hook hand?

LadyPhiddler said:on March 27, 2010 01:49 AM ETedited on March 27, 2010 02:44 AM ET

Our SSRichey wanted to know if any of us have had yarn burn around our little finger from thetension.

I have had that and I have a variety of techniques to eliminate it. But, it would be very interestingto know how YOU hold the yarn/thread in your non-hook hand (tension hand). Will you share yourtechniques wtih us?

Looking forward to LOTS of innovative comments!

How do I hold my yarn? I don't hold it the way it is shown in that diagram above.

Holding my left hand up, palm facing right, I lay the yarn in the valley between my ring and pinkyfinger. Then, I wrap the yarn (loose end) away from my pinky finger, and bring it over all fourfingers laying it gently on top of them. My thumb holds the yarn between the 1st knuckle of mymiddle finger. I use my index finger to lift upward which draws more yarn through the ring/pinkyvalley. Then I crochet.

If I am using thread, then I make one more wrap, under my two first fingers, and then over thosesame two fingers. Again, my thumb holds the thread in place against the 1st knuckle of my middlefinger.

Don't forget to wash your hands with soap and water. Dry them, and if necessary, sprinkle a bit ofbaby powder on your palms and work it into the valley area of your fingers.

Crochet: Waffle Cable Crochet Stitch (Diamond Stitch) on YouTube.com

LadyPhiddler said:on March 16, 2010 02:24 AM ET

Greetings,

Four days later and my big PC is still updating. This laptop's postage stamp sized keyboard ismaddening!

However, I did surf through YouTube looking for a waffle stitch. I'm sure I'll find it, but I cameacross an advanced version of the stitch: Waffle Cable Crochet Stitchhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRH7-b0l2rQ . The fellow that teaches it draws out the stitches on abig white-board, and since you can pause the video, I was able to keep up with the example.

If you have some worsted weight yarn, and a big crochet hook ( I *eye* size), give this a try. Whenfinished it would make hot pad (cotton yarn) or add it to a garment's length, or around the bottom. It's about texture, crochet on top of crochet, onthe fly (done as you crochet row after row).Simply beautiful, and EASY. Really!

Here's a link to the webpage showing thediamond stitch (right) for those that may nothave high-speed connections.http://potluckcrafters.blogspot.com/2009/04/in-your-face-diamond-stitch.html

I can imagine this stitch used on a pillow andhaving ribbons slipped under the diamonds(treble crochets), or done with thread and usedas a pillow case edging.

I need more coffee AND a new PC!

Enjoy!

I'm still using this postage-stamp-sized laptop keyboard. It's been 48 hours straight that Microsofthas been booting and rebooting my main PC. I'm told this could continue for a week or more. Thismust be their planned withdrawl process. Each day I hate being on the computer more and more.(rant over)

I read your comments on limited craft funds and thought you might remember this one:

FreePatterns.com http://www.freepatterns.com/

For those of you that have MULTI-talents in the craft world, you will probably love theFreePatterns.com website http://www.freepatterns.com/ They have patterns for:

* Beading * Craft * Cross Stitch * Knitting * Paper Crafts * Plastic Canvas * Quilting * Sewing, and * Crochet (of course)

ALL FOR FREE!

One word of caution on the CrochetPatternCentral.com website.http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/

Two weeks ago I got a malware virus from a link on their page of Crochet BookmarkPattern links. I wrote to the system adminstrator, cited their page and the link, and the malwarename. They never responded to me. The malware was a "snooparound' or "lookaround" programthat came wrapped in a 'pdf' format extension. Once it launches itself inside your computer it willsearch for sensitive information and, unless your virus program is up to date, the malware will sendyour data to another location. It threatens your financial safety...

If you use that site, MAKE SURE YOUR VIRUS PROGRAM IS UPDATED TO CURRENT LEVELS!My virus program stopped it, but not completely. It did store itself and it opened its payload. I hadto do the final cleanup in SafeMode to get it completely out. So, just avoid the problem and keepyour antivirus program current.

Spring hat

ruraljoan said:on March 13, 2010 08:07 AM ET

I just finished making a spring hat for my friend who is going through chemotherapy. I wanted tomake her something in a neutral color and lighter weight with air holes now that the weather iswarming up. She said it will take six to eight weeks for her hair to grow back now that she hascompleted the treatments -- and doing very well, Thank God! -- so I wanted her to have somethingcute to wear to work as librarian at a local university. I left off a hatband and said she could tie acolorful scarf or a pretty ribbon to match her outfits and dress it up.

I didn't have a pattern, only an old hat I made years ago and saved in case I ever needed to try thatout again. What do you think of it?

Crochet: Bath Set for YOURSELF !

LadyPhiddler said:on March 13, 2010 04:14 AM ET

Greetings,

Unintentionally, I made a face cloth for myself. Itstarted out as a practice piece using a new stitch. Itmeasures 8" x 4". I just wanted to get used to the newstitch and then to see how absorbent the cotton-blendwas. I was pleased with the stitch but not with theabsorbency.

I just put it aside and it found its way into my laundrybasket. After it came out of the drier it held its shapeperfectly and it was softer. I couldn't just toss it away,so I hung it near my sink. I used it yesterday to washmy face. It was soft, absorbed the water and the soapperfectly, and felt very nice on my face.

Why hadn't I made something like this little wash clothfor myself ages ago? I was too busy making things togive to others. I bet you do, too.

Here ...

Make this little set for yourself. Or make two of themand rotate one into your next laundry load.

Crochet: Hats and Headwear

Greetings,

I'm making that Purple Wig from our topic: Crochet Wigs: Mardi Gras or Halloween and whilemaking as a Mardi Gras gift for it for a lady friend of mine, I realized that her husband is equallyactive in our out-of-place Mardi Gras festivities and he should have a head-dress as well.

You do understand how one project leads to another and then you need a bigger house for thesupplies, right? Right!

His hat stared out as a granny square and about 6 rows around I intentionally stopped making thefour corners, but did just a 3-db crochet, ch-1 in each corner, thus beginning a cylindrical elementfor 3 rows, and then 6 rows of sc to create the band area. Anyway, I needed instructions to make a'bill' or 'brim' for the hat.

Crochet: Graduation Crocheted Lei

LadyPhiddler said:on March 7, 2010 06:35 PM ET

Greetings,

I lived a year in Hawaii and graduation day is a BIG celebration day. The graduates, at the end ofthe ceremony, are covered with flower leis, the most sought after lei is the double-carnation leiwhich is 4 full sized carnations, threaded into a circle and then another circle of 4-carnations isplaced on top of that.... making a lei that goes from the graduate's neck to mid-thigh. It is VERYheavy.

Crochet: Cutting Rags into Strips

LadyPhiddler said:on March 7, 2010 02:14 PM ETedited on March 7, 2010 02:19 PM ET

Greetings:

Copied from Fiber-Images.com . http://www.images.com

Fabric cut on the bias has more stretch than fabric cut onthe straight of grain. For this reason, bias tape easily fitsaround corners and curves.

To make yards and yards of continuous bias tape, lay outfabric and cut off one end at a 45-degree angle. Sew thiscut piece to the other end. See Diagram #1.

On the reverse side of the fabric, mark off the desired biastape width parallel to the 45 degree edge. (Diagram #1shows five strips but mark as many as your fabric willallow.)

Place the two lengthwise edges right sides together andoffset both ends the desired width of the finished tape. For example, for 1-1/4” tape, offset piece #1and #5 (shown in Diagram #2) 1-1/4”. Sew a 1/4 ” seam along the length of the fabric creating aspiraled piece of fabric.

Cut along the marked lines in the spiral starting at the line between #1 and #2 and continue to theend.

To figure how much bias tape you will get out of a piece of fabric:(1) Measure your piece of fabric that you are going to be cutting your bias strips from.(2) Now multiply the measurement of the fabric by itself to get the squares inches of the area.(3) Then divide the squares inches by the desired width of the bias strip.

For Example :Square = 12”So 12 x 12 = 144 square inchesBias Tape Width = 2”Therefore, 144 / 2 = 72 ” of 2" wide bias strips from a 12" square.

Know Not to Not Knot? Naught? (aka Crocheting is easier than English)

LadyPhiddler said:on February 27, 2010 10:08 PM ETedited on February 27, 2010 10:10 PM ET

Greetings:

Did that make you dizzy? Sorry.

It occured me that not knotting your yarn/thread might not be known by everyone. It'll come apartunless you put a bit of Gorilla Glue on it, and then it would look awful.

Simply don't knot. Instead of knotting, the ends (begging ends and ending ends) are woven intothe crochet work. The easiest way to do it is as-you-go, like this.

Page 67: We began as a group on an AARP.org bulletin board … began as a group on an AARP.org bulletin board Crochet: Legal Hookers Now, we will soon have our own bulletin board: LegalHookersCrochet.com

67

Or, you can do all of them afteryou're finished, but that wouldcause me not to want to finish withall that weaving and tucking todo...

And, now...

.... and for the academics amongstus, that need theory first, here's alink to the text verion of weavingthe ends.http://crochetanon.wordpress.com/2009/04/20/weaving-in-ends-securely/

Now you know, not to knot.

Greetings:

Sometimes images are too small for me to see the details. Sometimes text is too tiny to read.

I could pull my computer screen closer, but I prefer to use this nifty little keyboard / mousecommand.

1) Hold down your keyboard's "Ctrl" key (there are two, one on each side of theSpace bar), then

2) Move your mouse wheel forward, or backward, one click at a time, toincrease/decrease the screen.

This keyboard command can be used with other programs, too, but not all of them. So try it withExcel, Word, etc. to make life nicer.

Remember how I suggested embellishingcrocheted items? The button on this item setsit apart from all others that I saw. Imagine, for a minute, if you made the coffee cozy with single-crochet stitches, instead of the double-crochet stitches as is shown in the pattern, then you wouldhave a very nice 'grid' surface upon which you could embroider the person's name, or initials, or theword, "COFFEE" ... or something..

I use rice instead of beans. I also put the rice into a stocking leg. Use clean panty hose, or kneehigh stocking. Tie off open ends.

Crochet Project Done Perfectly... but *sad sigh* you don't want to be seen inpublic with it?

LadyPhiddler said:on February 25, 2010 04:01 AM ET

Yeah, I suspect we've all had that kind of a finished product. You followed the pattern andeverything is perfect. Stitches are nice and even, no (visible) mistakes, and yet when you look at it,there's pride, but no excitement.

If you still have that item, get it out and think about adding some interest to it, 3-D interestingthings. Remember those small crocheted hearts, and the snowmen, little 'fridgies' that are shownon CrochetPatternCentral.com http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/fridgies.php . Put some ofthose on the item, lay them on it, and then visualize some embroidery work that ties them togehter, like leaves and stems would tie a flower together, ground it.

Like what? Like these simple raised cup embroiderystitches from the Hand Embroidery Network blogspotto see how to make these raised cups.http://handembroiderynetwork.blogspot.com/2009/11/stitch-day-raised-cup-stitch.html

While you're at the HandEmbroideryNetwork.blogspotwebsite, scroll down, and look on the RIGHT side fora list of embroidry stitches.

Or this ribbon embroidered flower shown at the ThreadMagazine.com websitehttp://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/3725/beginners-silk-ribbon-embroidery-five-easy-stitches/page/all

Think about it. A single crocheted square, though it is solid,is a perfect canvas-type base onto which you could embroidera cross-stitch pattern (with yarn, thread, floss). Or usethese timeless Elizabethan Blackwork Embroidery designs, like this artichoke patterns...

Each Event Crochet Challenge will be crocheted, and the crochetmight be an embellishement, or the main item itself. I hope to make these event specific, and somethat could be used for any occassion. So, here's the first one.

I can imagine this in black yarn with strong rubyand white ribbon to give to a man. Red yarn, withgold and green ribbon: Christmas of course.Mother's Day? Father's Day? A wedding gift?School colors?

Spring, Babies, Showers and Gifts - Embellish with Crochet

LadyPhiddler said:on February 19, 2010 12:28 AM ETedited on February 19, 2010 12:30 AM ET

Greetings,

Springtime must be on the way: I found myself thinking of little lambs, gentle green pastures, babies and showers... BABY SHOWERS. I have made and given this gift to new mothers and tochildren. They use it as a night-light, or as a wish/light, or a prayer light... imagination isunlimited.

This one (below) is not crocheted, but the one I made had a filet crochet edging with tuleunderneath the 3" edging strip, and the bow was made of tule. The decoration possibilities areendless. Make one for a baby shower, a 1st birthday, a house warming, a series of them asdeck/patio decorations, doorstops, etc.

There are the traditional glass blocks, into which youmust drill a hole, and there are heavy plastic blocksthat look like glass and have a pre-existing hole. Usechristmas lights, with white wire. Use any color oflights. Slip them into the hole, arrange with an un-twisted coat-hanger to position the lights inside.

Measure flat ribbon (crochet ediging) long enough togo around the block once, make two! Lay them flaton a table, crossed at their middles, and then rivet orstaple the bow onto the crossed area, through bothribbons. Tape the loose ends of the ribbon onto thebottom side of the block. You might want to "gorilla

glue" a glass marble under each corner to lift the block up.

Embellish with crochet! ( I wish I had taken a photo of the two I made... grrrr )

PLARN -- USING PLASTIC BAGS AS YARN

ruraljoan said:on February 18, 2010 09:25 AM ET

I experimented last year in keeping with the "green" philosophy byusing plastic bags as yarn, known on the internet as plarn, for some ofmy crochet projects. I made purses, bags, hats and even beerhuggies. I entertained friends and strangers who watched infascination as I worked up these items entirely out of plastic shoppingbags. Check out the website www.myrecycledbags.com for some ideason this interesting twist on our craft.

Tunisian Crochet: Do you know how to do this?

LadyPhiddler said:on February 13, 2010 09:38 PM ETedited on February 13, 2010 09:40 PM ET

Greetings,

I have loads of projects, and supplies, too! I really don't need a something else that will add to my"to do" list, but this TUNISIAN crochet has haunted and tempted me for 20 years or better.

Tunisian Crochet is also known as: Tricot crochet, Shepherds crochet, Hook knitting, and Railroadknitting.

There's one hook, as long as a knitting needle. Seems there is a 'cast on' of stitches, and .. and wellthen... then I get confused. *hehe*

Do any of you know how to "tunisian"? *hehehe* Is that a verb AND a noun? *shrugs* Forget thegrammar issues.... have you??

Look at this...

and... this must be an advanced stage...

What has been your experience?

Men Crochet? Uh-huh. Meet Drew Emborski - The Crochet Dude!

LadyPhiddler said:on February 13, 2010 05:18 PM ET

Greetings:

Ok, so this is just the reverse of a female NASCAR racer, right? Whenthe male, or female, enters into an activity that is an opposite-genderactivity, well, it causes eyebrows to go up and heads to turn. That'sthe immediate reaction.

After that, the person has to prove themselves, and typically, it'sbeen easy to do that. Why? Because men and women thinkdifferently. So, a female NASCAR racer will see opportunitites that amale drive had not thought about, and vice versa.

With that said, let me indroduction you to The Crochet Dude, DrewEmborsky! He crochets differently than we do, refreshing and a bitinspring, too. For instance, look at his Cable Car Hobo bag....

I never would have thought to do it that way! Here's a link to his pattern books webpage.

Crochet Edging around Bead Garland

LadyPhiddler said:on February 11, 2010 09:25 PM ETedited on February 11, 2010 09:30 PM ET

Greetings:

Add a special touch to that bead garland you see during theholidays. It comes in silver, red, gold and clear at Christmastime. During Mardi Gras days, they make it in green and purple, too! Easter brings the pastel colors. July adds blue! By theyear's end, there'll will have been offered a whole rainbow ofbeads to purchase!

This is my photograph of some gold bead garland that I'm workingon. Thought I'd stop, take a photograph and write the pattern. Yes, I'm supposed to be working ona website, but that's my night job ( denial, denial, denial ).

The pattern, I call "Crochet Bead Garland", and photograph are free for you to use. They are mine, and as you will see, a notation on the pattern gives my full permission for anyone to use themfreely, as long as it is not for profit or personal gain.

Enjoy!

Crochet Beginners to Advanced: Crochet Embellishments for Other Items

LadyPhiddler said:on February 8, 2010 02:31 AM ET

Greetings:

Using the things you crochet is a real treat. Beginners usually make dishclothes or a small rug.Advanced users may find it time consuming to make an entire sweater, or that our bodies (Godforbid) have oodles of Michellan Man tires, on top of tires... *cursing self*.

But, adding something to an item that already fits and looks nice, is a special touch. This first oneis best suited for a bride to wear, and I just couldn't put it at the bottom of this topic. Pretty, isn'nit? It's just small circular motifs, joined together. They could be added to a skirt's lower area, oronto a jacket. Change thread color, or use yarn... experiment.

Or make a denim bag into a happy one.

Adorn a simple t-shirt....

or fancy up a pillow...

Greetings:

I'm sure we all have bits and pieces of yarn, thread, an oddbutton, a bead or two. I keep mine. Do you?

*laughing* I know you do, too!

What do you do with them? I just keep them, until today! IGoogled (yes it is a verb now) "Crochet Cards" and found this little lovely thing.

Darling, isn't it? Well, that lucky discovery lead to more........

Here's another...

Remember those stupid (I thought they were stupid) crochetedChristmas wreaths, or the paper-clip crocheted ice skates, or the 1-dimentional snow men? Well, I don't think they're stupid anymore! They're loving embellishments on cards, tastefully done, of course.

Google "Crochet cards" and when it finds a list of sites, click on the"Images" option. Oh boy!

Want that 'knitted feel' from your crochet work?

LadyPhiddler said:on February 7, 2010 12:01 PM ET

I love to crochet, and I love the way knitted items feel. I wondered if I could make my crocheteditems feel as soft as knitted. After experimenting, I was successful, especially with baby items.

How?

1) Reduce the size of the yarn:

* Worsted weight becomes Sports Weight * Sports Weight becomes Baby Weight * etc.

2) Increase the hook size:

* E becomes F * F becomes G * etc.

3) Wash the item and rinse it with fabric softner.

I have assumed that you block the item before washing it, and again after it has dried, using a wetpressing cloth (cotton or muslin). Then add bows, ribbons, whatever adrons the beautiful piece.

Example: This pattern called for worsted weightyarn. I used sports weight with a one-size-larger-hook. This baby afghan is ready to cuddlethat soon-to-be grandchild.

That particular pattern is from the Leisure Artsbook: Our Best Baby Afghans - No. 2853 for$14.95.

Make a Journal of Your Crochet and Craft Items

LadyPhiddler said:on February 6, 2010 08:53 PM ETedited on February 6, 2010 09:16 PM ET

Greetings:

I never really gave any thought about documenting the craft and crochet items that I've made untila very well known quilter visited with me. I was creating a webpage of her work for the up-comingquilt show. I asked for photographs of her work and details pertaining about each item.

To my surprise she produced the photograph and specific information about each item, not justwhen the item was made, but when it was later judged and received awards, many awards, manyjudgings. How did she do it?

The next time she visited she brought CD with her, and showed me her electronic journal. It's just aword document with photographs on pages, and information about each quilted item. It was easyfor her to copy/paste the data that I needed.

Who is she? Joan Dyer. Click here to see her as the Featured Quilter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild, and click here to see her array of quilted items. She dyes her own cloth, and all-in-all, she had 12display boards filled with her quilted items.

Crochet: Flat Braid Joining of Motifs (Granny Sqauares) withoutsewing!

LadyPhiddler said:on January 31, 2010 01:41 PM ETedited on January 31, 2010 02:45 PM ET

This technique is one of those "Ishould have had a V-8" moments! You'll love it!

Don't you just love the Internet?

Look at these motif [mow-TEEF]squares and how lovely they areput together. That is "Flat BraidJoining".

The crocheter's name is uncertain, though she is in Australia. Isuspect her last name is"Thornberry" as that's the name ofher lovely website.

As she explains, she used an online video to understand the technique of Flat Braided Joining.

"Flat Braid Joining Video 1" (preparing first motif) andhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=AU&hl=en-GB&v=2qfBKZwqBgE&feature=related

"Flat Braid Joining Video 2" (joining them together)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvwVqUVVtVY&feature=related

"Flat Braid Joining Video 3" (joining a lower square row)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jpANA71KFk&feature=related

"Flat Braid Joining Video 4" (joining into a corner grouping)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2AyjOzWKYQ&feature=related

It's not difficult at all, but it does seem perplexing at first, then... yeah... then the V8 head-slap!OH! I get it!!! And, off you'll go making oodles of motifs (fancy name for granny squares).

I have also used it on 6-sided motifs, too. It is so beautiful, unlike the whip stitch (that comesapart) and the single crochet (which leaves ridges).

Here is a simple drawing of the Flat Braid as used to join round crochet work.

Enjoy Braiding and Grannies... *hehehe*

Mobius: A scarf with a twist!

LadyPhiddler said:on January 10, 2010 03:13 AM ETedited on January 10, 2010 03:15 AM ET

This scarf, with a twist, is the most feminine scarf I have ever seen. It is a circular scarf, with onetwist (the mobius) and can be lifted up onto the head, as a hood of sorts, and left to lay on thechest with a cowl-type of elegance.

While make the instructions, I do admit that I nearly went cross-eyed, and there was a time when Iwas a bit dizzy.

Here's an image of the single-sided Mobius strip:

A mobius, is known by most everyone that has ever seen, or used, a conveyor belt. That belt, hasone twist on the underneath side, thus creating a one sided plain. Why would they do that?Without the twist, only one side of the belt would be the surface and it would be worn out. Addingthe twist puts both sides on the surface. Are you dizzy yet? Don't focus on the scientific element, just make the scarf.

And, here's a PDF file with step by step instructions, along withthe image to make a Crocheted Mobius .http://ladyfiddler.chrisdabis.com/docs/Crochet-Mobius-Instructions.pdf

After mastering the Mobius strip, then use the Solomon LoveKnot stitch to make a crocheted version of the one shownbelow (which was knitted).

Crochet Chart Patterns

LadyPhiddler said:on September 3, 2009 02:27 PM ETedited on September 3, 2009 02:31 PM ET

Sometimes referred to as:

* Chart Crochet * Diagram Crochet * Symbol Crochet * Blueprint Crochet * International Symbol/Diagram Crochet

But, by any name, it is the easiest way to read a crochet pattern by far!

What's new in Crochet? It's not really new, but very rare in the USA.

Crochet Chart Patterns and sometimes refereed to as:

* Symbol Crochet, also called * International Symbol/Diagram, also known as * Blueprint Crochet Why are they great?

* You are visually shown the pattern, and it looks like the finished product! * They are not limited to a written language * They show the finished product in it's skeleton form, each stitch-symbol in its place. * There are no abbreviations and the symbols make sense. * There is no need to fumble through lines of abbreviated text to find your next fewstitches.

Jessica Tromp's Free (Charted) Crochet Patternshttp://www.jessica-tromp.nl/freecrochetpatternwomensclothingbasicwomanpatterns.htm(It's not a well laid out site, but very much worth visiting!)

Japanese Nikon Crochet Books at Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Nihon%20Vogue&page=1 have these chart patterns.

And, saving the best for last, look at these Russian Doilies (translates through Babelfish as"Napkins")http://66.163.168.225/babelfish/translate_url_content?.intl=us&lp=ru_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fpetli.sitecity.ru%2fphtml_0809210542.phtmlshown in image and charts.

And these three Japanese Crochet books:

Book One (doilies)http://www.yesasia.com/us/1004022292-0-0-0-en/info.html

Book Two (motifs)http://www.yesasia.com/us/1004494955-0-0-0-en/info.html

Book Three (kitchen items)http://www.yesasia.com/us/1003967098-0-0-0-en/info.html

As you have seen, these Chart (Blueprint / Symbol / Diagram) patterns are very popularin South America, Europe, Russia and Asia, but they're still rare here in the USA. Afterhaving used the Charted patterns for a while, I have actually drawn a chart from my textpatterns just so I can understand what they are telling me to do.

You may need to translate the websites from other langauges into English. I useAltaVista's Bablefish to do that. It does an excellent job.

Enjoy,
