WE ARE FRIENDS OF THE ENGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY
Meet and Greet the New Director. The library hosted a welcome reception for new director Mary Witherell (top center, flanked by Mayor Frank Huttle III and State Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle) on October 18. Mary brings a wealth of experience to the community, from her dual careers in magazine publishing and library administration. Mary was
managing editor of several titles, including Ladies’ Home Journal, American Health, and CosmoGirl, where she supervised the editorial staff, managed the budget, and navigated tight production schedules. In 2010 she sought a career change by earning a master’s degree in library
Book Sale. Committee Chair Cynthia Sumner reports that we made $12,100 at our big sale October 16-18. This is $500 less than last year’s sale, but it is impressive considering that this year’s sale was only three days long, compared with last year’s four-day sale.
Museum Vouchers and Passes. The Friends are providing free passes and vouchers to Englewood and Englewood Cliffs residents for the following museums: Newark Museum; New York Historical Society; American Museum of Natural History; Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Reserve your pass or get more information about the museum pass program at the library.
Volunteer Opportunities. We are always pleased to welcome new volunteers to help with our book sale. Please contact Cynthia Sumner at 201-871-1164.

Dedication of the Tiny Free Library. Friends board directors and supporters gathered at Veteran’s Memorial Park last summer to dedicate the Tiny Free Library, the first miniature library in Englewood.
Irmari Nacht says the Tiny Free Library has passed its three-month trial period and has been enthusiastically received by the community. This small free book shelter, part of a national and international movement where adults and children are invited to take or leave a book under the honor system, is located at Veteran’s Memorial Park, near the bus stop at the southwest corner of North Dean Street and Demarest Avenue. The Friends find that they need to add more books to the Tiny Free Library almost every day and are delighted to do so! We hope the little library will build community, celebrate creativity, and encourage reading and use of the Englewood Library. Irmari hopes that this project will continue and that community groups, schools and artists will work toward placing a miniature library in their neighborhoods.
Donate Items. Please drop off donations at the Circulation Desk. We are especially looking for lightly used children’s books, to replenish the Tiny Free Library. Donated items are also sold during our book sales, with all proceeds going to help the work our library does for the community.
