   WD USB HDD Image Un‐locker Pro‐JMS538S supports both WD 2.5 my passport and 3.5 my book 

USB hard drives. The most important is that users need to confirm the main controller ic model by 

uninstalling  the  PCB  and  check  the  square  chip  near  the  USB  interface. 

This image cannot currently be displayed.

   For WD  USB  hard  drives‐my  passport  series,  all  data  coming  to  the  USB  interface  become 

encrypted due to the hardware encryption technology used by the USB controller chip. This is done 

automatically  whether  you  set  password  or  not.     If  your WD  USB  hard  drive  has  a model 

of JMS538S on its main controller IC, you can use WD USB HDD Image Un‐locker Pro‐JMS538S to 

unlock the USB hdd image after you are able to image the USB hdd to one good SATA hdd. Please 

note: if the original USB hdd is encrypted by some special software like WD smartware, this one 

cannot be  fixed by our  tool  so  far.  It's  very  easy  to use WD USB HDD  Image Un‐locker Pro‐

JMS538S: 1,   Remove the U14 from the original USB PCB and  insert  it to the chip holder of the 

unlocker pro; 2, Insert the target SATA hdd to the hdd holder; 3, Connect the external power supply 

and power on the hdd; 4, Connect USB cable and you will find the new target hdd in the pc and 

the  data  is  recognized.  It's  necessary  to  learn  WD  USB  hard  drive=WD  SATA  hard  drive 

elements+USB‐SATA elements. The key elements on one WD usb hard drives are U12‐ROM chip; 

U14‐USB firmware controlling chip and the main controller IC. When users are trying to repair and 

recover lost data from USB hard drives, it is necessary to convert the USB interface to SATA interface 

or change the USB PCB to compatible SATA PCB. USB adapter is sometimes useful when the USB‐

SATA part of the hard drive is good. After users are able to connect the USB hard drives and handle 

on it and finally able to image the USB hdd to a good target hdd, users may not extract the data as 

well due to the encryption and at this time, users need to use the original PCB board including the 

main  controller  ic  and U14  chip  to  decrypt  the  image.  So  users  need  to  have  very  sufficient 

soldering skills and very careful and patient data recovery attitude. In this way, users may waste a 

lot of  time and  increase  the  risk of damaging  the chips or even  the PCB and  finally  lose  in  the 

competition.
