SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

WEST CHICAGO – Beforeeven crossing off a day on thenew 2015 calendar, there arealready plenty of stories brew-ing in West Chicago. Here’s alook at the headlines to watchfor in the new year:

1. School upgradesWhat we know: The lo-

cal high school is getting afacelift.

Community High SchoolDistrict 94 approved movingforward with Phase 2 of itslong-range facility plan, whichincludes major renovations tothe building.

Administrative offices will

be stripped down and recon-figured to include offices forcounselors, social workers, deans and resource officers.

The visitor entrance to thebuilding is being rebuilt toinclude a space for a recep-tionist. The district also planson changing the currentcounselor area into a studentactivity center.

Conference rooms werescheduled to be built in the

school during winter break. What’s next: The planning

and design of the renovationis almost complete. Bids areexpected to be presented tothe Board of Education inFebruary.

Quote of note: “The ultimategoal of Phase 2 is to create acentralized student supportservices area in the currentlocation of the administrativeoffices.” Superintendent DougDomeracki

2. Tech talkWhat we know: The District

94 board voted to implement a1:1 Chromebook program. All2,200 students in the districtwill get a personal computer.

The district went througha pilot program two years agoand decided it wanted to im-plement the new technologyin the classroom.

It opted to move forwardwith the plan because of howmuch technology has saturat-ed society and how prevalentit is in everyday life.

What’s next: The programwill be implemented in fall ofthe 2015-16 school year.

$615,450 Costto the

district to purchase theChromebooks

3. Clean livingWhat we know: City offi-

cials asked – again – for thefederal government to releasefunds to support the cleanupof sites contaminated by tho-rium at the old Kerr-McGeefactory.

The funds would comefrom the Title X programthrough the Department ofEnergy.

In January 2009, Tronox –

formerly Kerr-McGee – filed

for bankruptcy and ceased

cleaning the site. No signifi-

cant progress was made in the

years since.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk,

R-Illinois, and U.S. Rep. Peter

Roskam, R-Wheaton, have

both visited the site and

expressed a desire to get the

funds released.

What’s next: The waiting is

the hardest part. There’s no

guarantee anything will hap-

pen in the coming year, but

it’s still on the city’s radar.

$6M Funds West Chi-cago would likely

get if the Senate approved

the appropriation for Title X

spending

4. Happy homecomingWhat we know: The Wayne

and Helen Fox Community

Center purchased the Wiant

House at 151 W. Washington

St. The historic home, which

housed the first city attorney,

had disintegrated interior

walls and needed exterior

repairs as well. Work has been

ongoing since May.

The city gave the center a

deadline of Nov. 30 to com-

plete the renovations to the

exterior of the building, and

the group met that deadline.

What’s next: The center

will continue to renovate

the interior of the building.

Although the exterior meets

city code, the center wants to

make the house more histor-

ically accurate. They plan to

renovate the porch and deck

on the house and install a

ramp to make it ADA compli-

ant. All work is expected to be

finished by June.

Quote of note: “We’ve been

really happy with the way it’s

turned out.” Community centerpresident David Sabathne speakingabout the renovation

5. Defamatory claimWhat we know: Tony Reyes,

a Winfield trustee, filed a

lawsuit against the Winfield

Express and its publisher,

Robert Greer.

Greer wrote an article

about the public comment

portion of a Winfield Plan

Commission meeting, at

which one person brought up

a controversial 2004 property

sale by the District 94 board,

of which Reyes was a member

at the time.

Reyes complained the arti-

cle Greer wrote was defamato-

ry and cast him in a false light.

The case was dismissed

by a DuPage County judge in

December.

What’s next: Thomas E.

Sullivan, Reyes’ attorney, said

he will appeal the decision.

Quote of note: “I don’t think

the case is anywhere near

over yet.” Reyes’ attorneyThomas E. Sullivan

Efforts to remove contaminants from the Kerr-McGee factory site in West Chicago will continue to stall in 2015 if the federal government does not provide promised funds to thetrust charged with the cleanup.

This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served,44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individualswere assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One ofthese families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below.

“With nowhere to go, mychildren and I walked toDuPagePads. With a lump inmy throat, tears in my eyesand my pride in my purse, Itold them, ‘I need help.’”

A myriad of challenges ledAngel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and nolonger had a place to call home for her and her children. Angeldescribes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!”

Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand.“They were there to root for me – that type of cheering sec-

tion helps you face your giants.”In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My

case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’”Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her fur-

nished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had takencare of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everythingin between.”

Angel and her children had been doing well until thissummer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for anemergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, whohad accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctorhe could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no rela-tives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.”

Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m.to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’schildren back to visit her and assured them their mother wasgoing to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rockthrough this trying time.”

“From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning sup-plies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuP-agePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; thereis one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. Tomy DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude andadmiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!”

Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel?Visit our website, www.dupagepads.org/donate, to see howyour donation can make more success stories possible. We lookforward to a new year as we work together to end homelessnessin DuPage County.

Why all the hate?I’m a 62-year-old black man,

and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I willnever understand how all this gotstarted. Back in the day, blackpeople had to go in the back dooror sit in the back of the bus, andwhite people could make themget up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen?Whycouldn’t we have love from thebeginning and stop all this hate? Idon’t understand how the color ofyour skin [matters]. Godmade usall, we are all God’s children and Ican’t understand all this hate.

‘Thrill of the chase’ attracts big turnout for Christmas bird countBy NATHAN LURZ

[email protected]

Birders from around thecounty and beyond migratedinto the forests, preserves, lakes and streets of DuPageCounty for the annual Christ-mas Bird Count in mid-De-cember.

Each year, the NationalAudubon Society sponsorscounts across the country. The two events the DuPageBirding Club held centeredaround the Morton Arbore-tum in Lisle on Dec. 14 andthe Fermilab in Warrenvilleon Dec. 20.

Each group covers a 7.5-mile radius from that pointand works with area captainsto coordinate movements andspot as many different birdsas possible.

“Our counts are some ofthe largest if not the largest inthe Midwest,” said Jeff Chap-man, the coordinator for theFermilab count and an envi-ronmental consultant fromWoodridge.

This December, birdersspotted a record number ofdifferent species – 89 – at theArboretum. The Fermilabcount saw an above-average83 species.

The society celebrated its115th Christmas Bird Countin 2014, according to the Audu-

bon website. By working withcoordinators like Chapman, the Society helps compile thedata for both local posterityand a bit of analysis.

“This is ... well-definedcounting in the same spotyear to year, so we can trackthe trends of certain species,”Chapman said.

Chapman said the annualcounts average around 100birders apiece, and have beengrowing in recent years.

“Why do people bird?”said Bob Fisher, member ofthe DuPage Birding Club andpresident of the Illinois Or-nithological Society. “Why dothey go out on a cold gray dayin [December]? Part of it is thethrill of the chase.”

Fisher said many enjoybeing a part of a larger effortof cataloging, but there is adefinite undercurrent of com-petition and adventure to theeffort.

“In their secret heart ofhearts every Christmas BirdCount birder longs to see somerarity on the Christmas Countto say ‘I saw it.’” he said. “Andthey don’t complete the sen-tence with ‘and you didn’t.’They want a whole bunch ofother people to see it.”

At the end of the counts, the Birding Club hosts an an-nual dinner, tallying the finalcounts for all species acrossboth events while they regaleone another with bird countstories and bond over a sharedlove of nature.

As to why so many showfor winter bird counts thatare, at best, bright and chillyand, at worst, covered infreezing snow?

“Some people would callit crazy, but I think in thewinter time ... people don’tgo out and bird as much, andit’s a chance to get togetherand count all day, then gettogether and have pizza anddrinks and become part ofthe season,” Chapman said.“During the holidays you gettogether with your familyand friends, and for me that’show ingrained this is every

year.”

“In their secret heart of hearts every

Christmas Bird Count birder longs to see some rarity

on the Christmas Count to say ‘I saw it.’ And they

don’t complete the sentence with ‘and you didn’t.’

They want a whole bunch of other people to see it.”

Platform tennis offerswinter sports option

By Stephanie Kohl

As the temperatures con-

tinue to drop, those looking for

outdoor recreational activities

are often limited.

Looking for a sport to play

this winter? Catch the Plat-

form tennis fever sweeping the

area. Platform tennis is a great

winter, spring and fall activity

played by men and women of

all ages.

The game is a racquet sport,

derived from tennis, usually

played two-against-two. The

court is one-third the size of a

traditional tennis court and is

surrounded by a wire fence. Un-

like its tennis counterpart, play-

ing the ball off the fence is not

just allowed, but encouraged.

The game is played with special

paddles that differ in size and

shape from tennis racquets.

“It really attracts a lot of

tennis players who want to

get outside during the winter

months,” said Laura Berendt,

platform tennis professional

with the Glen Ellyn Park Dis-

trict.

She said the sport attracts

tennis players, racquet ball

players and squash players of

all ages. Berendt said the game

is big on the North Shore and

is spreading into the West-

ern Suburbs. Although played

outside, Berendt said there is

enough movement, players

stay warm.

The Glen Ellyn Park Dis-

trict’s platform tennis facility,

845 Pershing Ave., features

four courts and a modern pad-

dle hut that offers a view of the

games. A heating system keeps

the deck ice free, allowing year-

round play. Court lighting en-

sures players can continue to

enjoy the game after sunset.

Whatever your skill or fit-

ness level, the game provides

a combination of outdoor exer-

cise, concentration, athleticism

and fun.

“It’s a small court, so you

can talk to your opponents

face-to-face,” Berendt said.

“It’s really a social sport.”

The park district has about 250

people involved in platform ten-

nis, be it through travel leagues

or in-house leagues. For more

information, visit gepark.org.

LA GRANGE – When you’re crav-ing the taste of Italy, there’s no need toempty your savings account on planetickets and hotel stays. Just head todowntown La Grange and visit LaBuona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare.

On a stormy December evening,my brother and I decided we were inthe mood for a home-cooked, heartyItalian meal, and decided to give LaBuona Vita a try.

Eager to satisfy our appetites, weperused the long-sheet menu temptingus with everything from steak andlamb chops to seafood. To open themeal, we ordered fried calamari, fullyaware of the amount of calories wewere about to consume.

Once we’d savored the well-pre-pared appetizer, our server broughtour dinner salads and two generouslyportioned pasta dishes.

My fellow diner chose the LinguineViareggio, featuring linguine withmussels, baby clams and scallopsdressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick.

While my taste buds usually cravea heap of spices, I decided to order theRigatoni Emilio – pairing the pastawith fresh mozzarella, homemademarinara and garlic. The sauce waslight and tasty, a great complement tothe creamy mozzarella.

After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both mybrother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ouncecould make its way to our stomachs –we were stuffed.

The restaurant also featuresgluten-free recipes including pastadishes, so no one has to miss out onthe pleasures of Italian dining. Andthe elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from aroundthe globe. The bar is a focal pointalong the sleek dining room, wherelarge windows look onto the cityscape.

During our next visit, the dinnermenu won’t be the only one on myradar, because I’m leaving room forone of the tempting dessert selections:La Buona Vita’s Molten ChocolateCake. It promises a warm chocolatecake with a gooey center served withvanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce.

On our visit, we found the foodalone was enough to warrant a returntrip, but the service added to theexperience. Not only was our serverattentive and extremely helpful when

it came to ordering our meals, but ourwater glasses never dipped below halffull. The staff made it a pamperingdinner.

So the next time you’re yearning

for pasta or tiramisu, a taste of Italy isas close as La Buona Vita in the heartof La Grange.

After being named tothe all-tournament team atThanksgiving, GlenbardWest junior Justin Piercenetted similar honors at therecent Christmas tournamentthe Hilltoppers hosted. Theforward scored 20 points inthe tourney opener againstWillowbrook, 19 againstHoffman Estates and 17 versusNorthridge Prep. Pierce, theWheaton Bank & Trust Athleteof the Week, spoke with Whea-ton Suburban Life sports re-porter Scott Schmid about theaward and the keys to a strongsecond half for the team.

Schmid: What were youroverall thoughts about how thetournament played out for yourteam [2-2 mark]?

Pierce: It was a bit of adisappointing tournament,we were definitely thinkingthat we could win that one.But I can’t be too disappoint-ed, we lost two close gamesto two good teams. Through-out the tournament, I sawsome incredible growth fromeveryone on the team. Thefirst game, we were incrediblyunbalanced in scoring and by

the last game, we had three orfour guys in double figures. That’s a sign we are comingtogether as a team.

Schmid: Was the individualrecognition nice?

Pierce: It is always a nicehonor, but I would much ratherhave won the tournament. Idon’t want to take away fromthe honor, it’s always a nicehonor to be named to theall-tournament team. This ismy third time [being selected tothe all-tournament team] and Iwas really excited the first time, now it’s more about winning.

Schmid: What is a key forgetting on a role as a team inJanuary?

Pierce: Five of our sixlosses have been within acouple of baskets here andthere. Coach always tells usthat it doesn’t just come downto the final possessions, thatevery possession matters. Juststringing together a full game,we haven’t done that all year. That’s the most exciting thingfor us, if we string togethera full game, we know we canhang with anybody.
