Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ what is MSC?

Mobile Switching Center (MSC)Combines of MSC-S & M-MGwResponsible for:

– Routing traffic and– Signaling information in the network

Some functions:– Call control management (Registration,..)– Mobility management (Location update,

handover, call routing,…)

Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ What is GMSC?

Gateway MSC (GMSC)Interface with fixed network (PSTN/ISDN)Retrieve information form HLR for location of sub.Route all calls to appropriate MSC/VLR Also perform charging for mobile terminate call

Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ What is HLR/AuC?

Home Location Register (HLR)Centralized database of subscriber

– Administrative information– Subscriber registration– Any supplementary services

Authentication Center (AuC)– Ciphering– User authentication

Page 10: Wcdma Core Network Introduction

10

Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ What is VLR?

Visitor Location Register (VLR)Database for both subscriber information and

Information relates to MSC in service areaOne VLR for each MSC

Packet Switch Overview-Cont’ What is SAU, PDP, SDS?

SAU– Stand for Simultaneously

Attached Users – Subscriber attached to the

networkPDP

– Packet Data Protocol– Data structure present for both

SGSN/GGSN– Contains subscriber’s session

information (Active user)– Information such as IP address,

IMSI, Subscriber tunnel IDSDS

– Simultaneous Data Session– Can be a PDP or more
