EDITOR'S NOTEHey, Hi, welcome back Arrwaves. It's

been two years since our last publica-tion, but due to the ever so high spiritedWCDB'ers, we've breathed new life intoour catatonic state. For all those whohave never experienced Airwaves, wewould like to open your eyes to themusic of the 1980's. This publication en-compasses the local music scene, artists'release since February, and the formatof the station that play those tunes,WCDB 9l FM. We've coveredeverything from the Neighborhoods toDwight Yoakam, HEY-Who's that?

WCDB:The GeneralView

WCDB 91FM is SUNY Albany's non-commercial FM radio station. It soundssimple, but actually it's a lot more thanyou may think. Take SUNY Albany forinstance, to some it's a vast expanse ofconcrete towering above the outer limitsof the city. For those of us who believethere is more to college life than lecturesand taking exams, WCDB can be theanswer. For those who need more ineveryday than listening to the samesongs hour after hour, WCDB is theanswer.

As you may have guessed, I've beenleading up to that ever elusive "non-commercial" part of what is now pro-bably no more than a distant memory;my first sentence. Non-commercial ismuch more than the negative of com-mercial. It's freedom from advertising.Commercial radio's problem is that theyhave to play songs that are "cool"because that's what sells 30 secondsevery two minutes. WCDB can use those30 seconds to play a song which isn'tcool...yet.

Don't get the idea that WCDB isobscure. We've always used a musicalphilosophy whereby we play a new songsandwiched between popular ones. thiskeeps the listener from getting lost andallows him or her to learn what's newand exciting on the music scene.

So listen to WCDB and you too canhear yourself say "Hey, what's thatgreat new song I heard between TheTemptations and REM"

Just about everydaY there issomething happening on WCDB. Everymonday night from 8-9pm is a programcalled Rediscovery where we take an in

there is much more to WCDB thanmusic: promotions, Production, news,

sports, and engineering. I would like tointroduce everybody to WCDB's rock

department. Rock constitutes the main ,

orientation of the programming, plus

the ever-growing lazz and Third Worlddepartments.

WCDB, as with most college radio

stations nationwide, offers an alter-

native choice in today's music world.You won't hear the same things onglFM that you would on any commer-cial top 40 or AOR radio station. We are

not trying to be obsCure or amateurishin our music, we just give new bands a

chance, playing a lot of artists who are

still on independent labels. Some bands

get noticed on college airwaves, and get

picked up on commercial radio( U2'REM, Dream AcademY, SimPle Minds),others get signed to major labels

(Husker Du, RePlacements, RainParade, Green on Red). Either way, it isthe job of college radio to help back

these bands.So, what makes WCDB so sPecial?

Our record library is one of the most ex-

tensive on the East Coast, the whole

East Coast, including all commercial

depth look at an artist or bands careerfrom the 50's, 60's, or 70's. RecentRediscoveries include The Byrds, TheVelvet Underground, Neil Young, TheGrateful Dead,David Bowie, The MC'sjust to name a fewlOn the first mondayof each month is an oldies specialhighlighting the music of the 50's-60's.

Tuesday nights at Spm is where we

feature the latest record from a band orartist, plus we offer a chance to win thesame record. RecentDrscovery's includeHusker Du's Candy Apple Grey andLets Active's Big Plans For Everybody.

At ll:30 on Tuesday is No/es Fromthe Underground where we present thelatest new music to appear on the scene

as well as an interesting blend of specialsand humor. An important aspect of thisshow is the emphasis given to Americanbands on independent labels.

The Ten Most can be heard everv

of 16,000 albums ranging from the1950s to the present. We Possess. a

singles library from the 1950s whichcontains many rare items that very fewother stations have.

'Big deal' you say, 'every radio sta-

tion gets records'. Not every radio sta-

tion gets free record service from every

major record label and most indepen-

dent labels, including free imports fromPolydor records. A lot of other collegestations have to pay for these services,

or even buy their albums at recordstores. With the help of monthly surveys

of new releases' airplay, we have agteatrelationship with the record companies,helping WCDB to become one of the

top six college radio stations in theUnited States. _ A.S.

The Jazz Showlf jazz is what You are into, 9lFM is

the place to be. It looks like 1986 just

might be the year for iazz in the CapitalDistrict and WCDB is a Part of it.

We have been involved in some verY

special local events this year' Marchbrought Hod O' Brien to Van DYke

restaurant for two nights. WCDBlisteners had the chance to receive a giftcertificate at the Van Dyke the night of

Wednesday night at 8pm. This is a countdown of the top albums of the week.

Special Cuts can be heard on Thurs-day at 8pm. This show consists of inter-views with bands and live concerts.

Every other Thursday is Albany'sown import show Albany Abroad. Thelatest sounds from overseas are playedhere before being heard on any otherimport show.

Friday at 8pm is Club 9.1 whichfeatures three hours of nonstop dancemusic for your dancing delight.

PubLic Affairs can be heard on Sun-days at noon. This is a news programcomplete with interviews and debates

concerning today's top news stories.Last but not least is the Sunday night

Jazz Special. Every Sunday at 8pm, theJazz department features a look back atan artist, style, genre that makes musicwhat it is today.

renowned sax-man Nick Brignola ap-peared at Puttin' On The Ritz. Unfor-tunately our interview was cancelled dueto a sudden attack of the flu, but wewere still able to give away tickets theentire week. Stay tuned to WCDB fordetails about Nick's return to Albany inApril.

Rounding out the month the LeeShaw Trio appeared at The ItaliaRestaurant in Troy just before SpringBreak. This is local jazz at its finest withShaw on piano and her husband, Stan,on drums. Before the show we aired aninterview along with a special dinner fortwo to finish up a week of ticketgiveaways.

To further spread the word about up-coming jazz events, the WCDB JazzBulletin can be heard on every Jazzshow. Not only do we keep you in touchwith the Jazz scene here in Albany, we

also feature the finest new releases fromall the major labels. On WCDB, you canhear all the best Jazz on labels, such as

Blue Note, ECM, Atlantic, and \Iuse.as well as the smaller ones includingCadence and Cotton Hill.

Notes From The UndergroundIt is I l:00 pm on a cold Tuesday night

and you are sitting at home with nothingto do. The radio is on, tuned to yourfavorite station (WCDB,9lFM) and youare drifting off into another world. Youhear the familiar sounds of yourfavorite group, The Jam, singing "Go-ing Underground", not thinking aboutwhat may lie ahead. Little do you know,you are about to experience the adven-turer of a lifetime.

You listen on, unable to break yourattention from the radio. The music is

overwhelming, something you've neverheard before.'hey', you think toyourself, "this isn't bad at all! But whyhaven't any other stations played this?"Then, it dawns on you, this is not justany radio show you are listening to. Youare hearing the brand new music thatcollege radio is known for. You think toyourself again, "Hey, I thought all thatnew music was weird." Something startsstirring inside you, a metamorphisis istaking place. You start calling all yourfriends to tell them what's going on.

They all think you've flipped: "Theyonly play weird music." But you knowbetter. You tell them, "They're playingthis band The Souls. They sound prettypoppish. About Nine Times sounds likesome band I've heard on Top 40. Sec-

A guitarist, a songwriter, a

philosopher, and most of all a

humanitarian. These are thecharacteristics that would describe Den-nis Boone of The Minutemen. His death

came so fast that one may never recoverfrom its repercussions. The shock of hispassing has caused me to rexamine whatThe Minutemen really stood for. Thetrio was not a hardcore band. No, muchmore than that they were concernedabout what direction America was go-

ing. The Minutemen were three guYs

that performed day in and day out in thehopes of arousing society to the realitiesof war, political corruption, and theneed for understanding lifes problems.

I will never forget the show down inN.Y.C. when the band pounded withconviction and guts that I've never seen

clubs in 5 years. Some of the hardcoreisn't really that bad. Who told me theywouldn't play anything I like?"

Suddenly, the music stops. You hearvoices. "Who are these guys? Why areinterrupting the music? Wait a minute,these guys sound good. Hey, that wasfunny. They have a good sense ofhumor. I wonder how they do that, Icould never think of those things to say.I wish I knew their names. Wait, Nor-man and Andy. I've heard about theseguys. With their reputation, this oughtabe good!!!"

It's now midnight, and the sportsreport is over. Notes is back on, and thehighlight of the show is coming - the 4

CAST 4 is next. A bell rings in yourhead. You know what is about to hap-pen, the four best new groups are aboutto be spotlighted. "Maybe someday oneof these bands will hit it big. " You thinkto yourself, "has any band gone to star-dom after being on the 4 CAST 4?"R.E.M. comes to mind. What else hasgone on to become well known? TheJesus and Mary Chain, Blue in Heaven,Primitons, March Violets, SmashPalace, The Men They Couldn't Hang,Gene Loves Jezebel, Flesh for Lulu, TheChant, The Faith Brothers, and Ex-ploding White Mice. These are somebands that I'm going to keep my eyesopen for in the future.

It is now 12:30 a.m., the saddest part

before. The intensity level in the clubwas so great that when D. Boone sang

"serious as a Heartattack!" I was trulymoved.

The release of their latest effort ThreeWay Tie For Last is a work with some ofthe most powerful tracks D. Boone has

ever composed. This might have pro-pelled The Minutemen to becomethe"kings of the hill." It's a questionthat may never be answered. Boone

symbolized an individual that madepunk rock fun. The band started outlistening to BOC, then Punk rockaltered their lives, turning The Men tonew adventures. The music became thesoul of D. Boone;it was a waY of ex-pressing his views on a variety of issues

that were dear to him.The death of D. Boone made me crY,

of the day. NOTES FROM THEUNDERGROUND is over. You stillcan't help thinking about it, you have tofind out more about your new favoriteradio show. "What else do they dobesides finding great new music to play?What, they have great specials also?"You hear from some other friends thatNotes has gone to Geneva with Presi-dent Reagan to do an anti-war special.They've had specials on drunk drivingand other social topics. They havespotlighted different independent recordlabels like Twin Tone, SST, Dolphin,Enigma and CD; City Spotliehts in-cluding Boston, MA, Athens, GA, andMinneapolis, Minn; artist spotlights likeLou Reed and King Crimson; annualHalloween and Christmas/Chanukahspecials and almost anything else youcan think of (a summer and surfingspecial in the middle of February andplaying 60 complete songs in 60 minutes????). What else can they think of? Staytuned.

Suddenly, you wake up in a coldsweat. "Could I have been dreaming allthis? Does NOTES FROM THEUNDERGROUND really exist? Cananything like that exist in the freeworld?" Keep your dial set to 9lFM,WCDB Albany on Tuesday nights atl1:00pm and find out!!!

not because the world lost a musi-cian,but that it came so quickly. When Iplace a record of the Men on the turn-table, I see D. Boone bouncing up anddown , while George Hurley slams hiskit with Mike Watt pumping his bass.These images of that NYC gig willalways be implanted in my brain andmake me realize how important theband was to us all. To quote D. Boone,from "The world according to hounds"which best summarizes the philosophyof The Minutemen "The How , TheWhy, The Where, The When, The Who,can these words find the truth".

The Minutemen affected my life quitea bit through their music and ideas. OnDecember 23rd, 1985, the world lost theultimate love child, Dennis Boone.

The Albany Music SceneThe Albany music scene took a dive

for the worst when The Ritz closed itsdoors and thus the opportunities ofmany bands to play there, sorne for thefirst time. We thank Delores for hertime and commitment and hope she willagain be a part of the local music scenein the future.

As one club closes its doors anotherone waits to open theirs. The club is call-ed QE2 and is the work of Dave andChar Shortsleeve who are two of thenicest people you'll ever want to meet.What exactly this new establishment isgoing to offer remains to be seen, butwith the support of the community as awhole QE2 can be very successful.

All this brings us into an introductionof the local music scene. Is it gettingworse? Is it getting better? What exactlyis the state of the Albany music scene?One thing for certain is that one band

stands out among all others. The bandthat you could always count on seeingand enjoying when it seemed like theywere the only working band in Albany.A band that you must see if you haven'talready. That band is the Chefs of theFuture. They are to be congratulatednot only for their talent, but also fortheir staying power. A favorite of thelocal music scene for nearly two years,The Chefs finally released HUB, a fulllength cassette of original music that canonly be described as Husker Du meetsHank Williams with a lirtle bir ofDwight Yoakam thrown in.

Now I am glad to say The Chefs havesome friendly competition, competitionthat is welcome by all. Bands likeHuman Anxiety(who've had their shareof problems but are back with a newcassette), Dirty Face, Mambo X,

Stomplistics, Dance Planet, DiversionFactor, Donnybrook Fair, The Ushers,China White, and The Grindstones(maythey rest in peace) are just some of thebands that have made their presence feltin Albany. The Albany music scene isjust now starting to get off its feet but itcan not stand alone. It's up to thenightclubs to take a chance on a newband and to pay them a decent wage fora solid night of music. It's up to theradio stations, both college and com-mercial, for the airtime that is so crucialto so many performers. But most of allit is up to the communityfor theirunyielding support and enthusiam.Remember one thing, without an au-dience these bands wouldn't be here to-day. Your support is greatly needed andappreciated to make the Albany musicscene the best it can be.

In six short months Mambo X haveachieved what many bands fail to; theyhave a strong local following, are fre-quently playing the club scene, and aredue to release a single.

Just who are Mambo X you might in-quire? They formed in October of 1985when guitarists Mitch Rosen and SethKaufman met while working at Dahlia's

DIRTY FACE

ice crean shop. They were soon joinedby Syracuse native Erin O'Hara onvocals, followed by former A.D.'sbassist Mark Wilken. WCDB jazz djBarry Litman set up his Tama kit andthe rest is history.

The sound of Mambo X is verydiverse and interesting. The wide rangeof influences include jazz,reggae,new

wave,and funk. These styles cometogether extremely well in their liveshow. Vocalist Erin O'hara is a crossbetween Natalie Merchant of 10,000Maniacs and theiegendary Val Haynes.But to hear Erin is not enough, one mustsee her live performance to appreciatethe quality and charismatic style she br-ings to the band that is Mambo X.

This Albany trio plays no nonsense,straight ahead power rock and roll thatis almost to good to be true. Their songsforge ahead with sheer drive and intensi-ty unequaled by their counterparts. Dir-ty Face are led by guitarist, writer,vocalists Dominick Campana Jr. whoplays some scorching guitar and is quitea performer on stage. The l-2 punch iskept by Matt Hayes behind his bass andstickman Ross Archer who is a veteranof tht local scene.

Dirty Face have recorded five songs atMCE studios and are a part of the MCEcompilation record due out soon. Theiropening live song,"Identity" has receiv-ed considerable airplay on WCDB andwe expect more material from them inthe future.

Their live show must be seen to ap-preciate their talent. It is explosive andfull of raw energy. Dirty Face - dumbname, great band.

"I'm so happy, I heard the news to-day...I jumped up and yelled:HOORAY." This is my reaction when Ihear of the next Chefs of the Future gig.The Chefs are a four piece band led byTom Lindsay on guitar and vocals,backed up wonderfully by: Joe Pasco onbass, John Lappie on drums and Mike(Jabba) Eck on rhythm guitar. Tom says

about the band;"We wanted to do abroad range of music (Husker-Du toHank Williams) in our own way, yetmake it enjoyable to the night clubcrowd." The Chefs have succeeded inthis, mixing a variety or originals andcovers into a danceable, sing-alongablefun time that leaves most people with a

happy feeling "down to their toes".The Chefs, through Raincoat recor-

dings (A.K.A Tom Lindsay), havereleased Hub,a full length cassette oforiginal work for anyone who enjoysgreat music but can't get out to see it.This is a quality cassette available atmost local music stores. If you're notsure they are for you,listen to or requestThe Chefs on WCDB, and judge foryourself.

A culmination of four differentmusical tastes into one sound results inone thing...the Stomps. They are a com-bination of R&B, reggae, funk, androck guitar. They are the kind of bandyou see when you want to dance, You'l'lhave no choice; once the music starts tochurn, so does your body. TheStomplistics gained recognition when

they won Telethon 85's Rock-n-RollWarfare. A recording session at MCEstudios was their winnings from thisevent. The single, released last year,contained "Fifteen and Gone" with"Go Staggerlee" on the flipside, whichhad tremendous success. More vinyl isexpected from them in the near future.The Stomp's main attraction has to be

their live performances. It's a pleasureto watch a band that really enjoys play-ing out. And ooh what a show they puton. If possible catch them on a doublebill with Chefs of the Future;guarenteed to be an enjoyable eveningof singing, dancing and sheerentertainment.

GRINDSTONESThe local music scene is always chang-

ing and the Grindstones are certianly noexception. The original line-up (JoeTopino, Nick Miller, Tim Kinneally,David Williams) is now a part of rockand roll history. Only those fortunateenough to see them live in their veryshort stint (summer'85) realized justhow much energy and excitement theseboys had on stage. A product of DuckSoup, the Grindstones played at leastonce a week to an ever increasing(drunk) audience. All this history can becaptured (somewhat) on a single record-ed at Arabellum Studios.

But that was then and this is now,Dave and Nick left the band to be

replaced by Chris Lynch and Bill Riley.

They have yet to find a name of whichthey can all agree on and are still waitingfor their first gig. I had a chance to see

the new 'Stones' at a party and despitethe lack of amplification they soundedvery good. Joe's brand new Fender bass

sounds crisp and clean while the guitarplaying of Tim keeps getting better andbetter. New drummer Chris L1'nchshould do the job the band needs.

Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist (Alter-native Tentacles)

After an absence of three years onvinyl, I was not sure what to expectfrom Frankencftzst. Although not as

fast paced as earlier recordings, this istypical DK's. Jello Biafra's sarcasm is atits biting best, destroying and condemn-ing the plastic commercial culture welive in. This is evident in the two bestcuts "MTV-Get Off The Air" and "Jock-O-Rama". MTV viciously attacksall that is wrong in video television. It isone of their most varied songs ever,utilizing trumpets and a slow introduc-tion (reminiscent of the Munsters themesong) and then breaking away to theusual frantic guitar riffs and poundingdrums. "Jock-O-Rama" is a high speeddestruction of organized sports andredneck jocks, which Jello seems to par-ticularly despise. After listening to thisalbum, you get the impression there isnothing decent and worthwhile left inthe world. Jello Biafra once said if hedidn't laugh at life, he'd go crazy, andmaybe he's right.

Young Fresh Fellows - Topsy Turvy (Park Avenue Records)

From the release of their first album,Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Nor-thwest, I knew this Seattle based bandhad something special. Now with therelease of their latest record Topsy Tur-ty the Young Fresh Fellows expandtheir sound with the help of newguitarist Jim Sangster. This addition hascreated a more mature and dynamicsound that was missing on their priorrelease. Topsy Turvy shows a widerange of musical diversity with slowacoustic songs such as the "Topsy Tur-vy Theme" complete with a countrypedal steel guitar feel and " The NewJohn Agar" which is a beautiful balladreminescent of Jason and the Scorchers.The album features upbeat and soliddriving songs such as "Two Lives" and"You Got Your Head On Backwards."All in all there are l3 very diverse songson Topsy Turvy. This album has it all.Hopefully we'll hear more fabuloussounds from the pacific southwest.

their next release after FIip Your Wigrvould be on Warner Bros., I becamevery pessimistic as to the changes thatwere bound to come. Fortunately, I amrelieved to say that this is another grear.Granted the Huskers have been calmingdown progressivel.v since Zen Arcade.But I'll argue that if anists don'r grou'they become stale. Husker Du is hardll'that. Their diversity ir 46:zine. On anumber o f tracks Husker Dudemonstrates that they have not lostthat energetic ability to create a wall ofsound while still on others a Dylanesquesound emerges with some very niceacoustic work. My conclusion is sell out,no, creative change, yes - Husker Du isone of the most important innovativebands of the eighties, open your mindand listen.

Crazy E's - Nervous in Suburbia ( RedRum Records)

This is the second LP from this ninemember band from Oregon. It may behard to believe, but this album is evenbetter than Law and Order, the amazingdisc that gave us classics like"JohnnyQ" and " Count Your Money." Thelyrics are worth noting, they hit right onthe spot. They talk about such things asfighting the system, "scratch andClaw", nuclear war, "First Strike", in-fatuation - "I Lose Control" and ofcourse apartheid - "Rubber Bullets",as well self-inflicted sexual practices("Picture on My Wall"). "Nervous InSuburbia" abounds with lively and op-timistic funk, jazz, and rock, all accom-panied by a sharp brass section. TheCrazy 8's music moves the spirit and themind.

Hoodoo Gurus - Mars Needs Guitars(Big Time Records)

A lot of great music is coming out ofAustralia and the Gurus are a part of it.Mars Needs Guitars ,which is an off-shoot of the film Mars Needs Women, isthe Gurus second album. The Gurus are

led by the very distinctive andcharismatic vocals of David Faulkner.There is some excellent guitar by BradSheppard, fine clean bass from ClydeBramley, and the not so new drummerwho really pounds the skins, MarkKingsmill. Though their second effort isnot as raunchy (Leilani) or danceable(Let's All Turn On, I Want You Back)as their first release, Strange Romeos,none of that seems to matter becausethis record is just as good if not better.

" In the Wild" is a psychedelic 60'ssong offset by the countryish " Hayrideto Hell", the most requested song fromthe album was "Death Defying" whichis a story of the perils of drug abuse.Anybody whose ever heard the Guruscan attest to their unique sound,whichcan only get better with the third release

has come with at least one majorchange, his name. Elvis has decidedthat he wants his old name back, Declan

Aloysius McManus (the Aloysisrepresents the part of himself he

developed as Elvis C.).Elvis (I mean Declan) has done more

than return to his original name, he hasstripped his sound of the over-production of Goodbye Cruel Worldand returned to the simple sounds of MyAim is True, but his musical frame ofreference has changed. The sound is byfar the most country he has been, yet hislyrics remain powerful and poignant.

Backing Elvis on his album are twobands The Attractions and The Con-federates, who back up for Hall andOates.

Steve Neive's work on the piano is ex-cellent behind Elvis's voice on the tuneslike "Jack of all Parades" and "Suit ofLights".

Elvis has really gone back to thebasics on King of America. He was notvery happy witt, Goodbye Cruel Worldbecause the songs were taken over by theproduction. This album is the exact op-posite - a polished musical backgroundfor Elvis's intense lyrics and distinctivevoice. This album is also like his earlieralbums because it offer$ an extraor-dinary musical value - 15 tracks!

Even though the backing musicianschange, this album is a seamless collec-tion of happy, soulful rock-'n'-roll.

This is a geat collection of music,listen and enjoy.

Joe Jackson - Big Wortd(A&M)This album transcends all of his

musical styles from Look Sharp (rockin'guitars) to Body and SouI (melodic lovesongs). This is the album Joe has been

wanting to make, no overdubs, nostudio work. It was recorded live infront of an audience. The audience was

asked to keep quiet, therefore, no ap-plause. It is quite an achievement, his

best yet. Bie Wor\d definitely has a

theme; losing ethnocentrism, realizingthat there are other people out therewho have as'much right to exist as us.

Jackson's lyrics are amazing, they get

right to the point. "All the record stores

are filled with pretty boys and theirmaterial girls and even students vote foractors, now they tell you it's a saferworld and all the hippies work for IBMor take control of faster ways to sell youfood that isn't really whole." (Soul

Kiss)Side two is very reminiscent of Body

and Soul, very melodic with a lot ofpiano and soothing melodies. Side three

is unbelievable, his best side of anyalbum. This includes a Joe Jacksontango, cranking guitars in "Jet Set" andthe obviously finale "Man in theStreet". This album is being heavilypromoted because of its new recordingmethod, and it's one record of 1986 thatdefinitely should not be missed.

Exploding White Mice - In a Nest ofYipers (Big Time Records)

Holy shit! I just put the needle on thisrecord and I thought I would need an in-jection of digitalis to calm my racing

heart. This is serious music for the

serious mind. It's bands like ExplodingWhite Mice who come along once in a

great while and just leave you wantingmore. These five guys from Australiaput out some unbelieveable music that is

truly representative of Rock-N-Rollwith obvious influences from the GunClub, Ramones, and the Stooges' In a

Nesf of Vipers is filled with fantasticguitar licks, pounding drums, and some

great vocals from Paul Gilchrist. '3

Dangerous" is an amazing cut that is

getting alot of airplay on WCDB. Theirversion of "Pipeline" is incredible (Iunderstand it sounds pretty good at 45

speed as well). Pure clean raunchYgarage music is what Exploding White

Mice is all about. Give these guys a

listen, ya won't regret it! I promise.

Public Image Limited Album(Elecktra)

This is not the typical PIL sound, butthen again neither was the last...whichwas quite successful. Johnny's voicemaintains the prominent whine butmusically this album varies. RiuichiSakamoto, a Japanese popartist accom-panies Johnny on the keyboards. GingerBaker from Cream plays on the drums.Musically, the instrumentals are morecomplicated and have an overall dif-ferent sound thanks to production byBill Laswell. To all old PIL fans whomoan with the changes, wait hold back.The old PIL sound is prominent onsongs like "Bag","Home",and"Fishing". The most outstanding songsare "Rise" and "FFF". "Rise" is wellproduced and unrecognizable as PIL ex-

cept for Johnny. It has a country twangand is simply fantastic. "Farewell myFairweather Friend" is a super Rock-N-Roll song with driving instrumentals.

Ruefrex - Flowers For All Oecasians(MCA)

Haited as "the most important bandto emerge from the Great Britain" byNME and called "The most Powerfulrecord released this year" by Record

Mirror, Ruefrex emerges from the mid-dle of Northern Ireland. Themurderously divided society of Nor-thern Ireland has given rise to a great

new rock-n-roll band, with a non-violent message that is played beforeCatholics and Protestants alike.

The band's songs are filled withslashing guitar. The passionate vocals oflead singer Allan Clarke attempts tomake sense of life when there is senseless

death all around them. Produced by the

Alarm's first producer, Mick Glossop,Ruefrex offers an album as real and ex-

citing as any you will hear this year.

Forming in 1978 out of the rubble ofBritain's punk era, the five bandmembers, have found the raw edgY

power that has well'-suited the anger felttowards their society. The drivingguitars make one compare them to theAlarm, with the vocals sounding like across of Mike Peters(Alarm), XTC, andBob Dylan. As a whole, the songs onthis powerful debut album give thelistener a sense of the Problems onNorth Ireland. The opening track "TheWild Colonial Boy",attacks Americanswho find the Irish Republican Army'sterrorism. "Paid in Kind" describes the

dehumanization that murder exacts onthe same terrorists. Other topics beside

violence are discussed as well. "Even theDark Hour" describes the ending of a

relationship.Finding themselves at that hot spot

where music and reality intersect,Ruefrex has made the most of it with astunning and fantastic debute album.

L.L.Cool J (Def Jam)The first word that comes to mind

after one listen to this album is HOT!Two, three, four listens,still HOT. The

hit on WCDB was " Rock the Bells."Other album greats are "That's a

Lie","I Can't Live Without My Radio"and '(Dear Yvette." The whole album

offers the best rap music around. LLhas been rapping since he was 9 years

old and now at 18 he has a smash album

on a major lable and one of the best live

shows. Standing 6'2" LL Cool J has an

overpowering presence. He repeatedly

runs the length of the stage with the

energy of a young stud (the image he ex-

presses). The energy he possess is con-

tagious,you will walk out sweating as

much as he does. Seriously, this is a

young fellow to waich in the future. Healready had a two minute bit in themovie Crush Groove, the best twominutes of the movie. Cool is definitelythis dude's middle namd.

It coun-tinues with the obvious influence fromthe Velvets and Beatle's RubberSoulplus there is a noticeablePsychedelic Furs sound.They still havethat jingle-janglish sound, only muchbetter than any other in this genre. Anoutstanding example of post-waradolescent youth in angst-DIG IT!

Bennie ishelped by Stevie Ray Vaughan, JohnScofield, and Dr. John.Some choicecuts are; "All Night Dance","TenesseeWaltz","Willie Mae",and "Trouble inMind".Stevie Ray Vaughan is featuredon guitar in "All Night Dance." BobCrenshaw on bass gives this shuffle allthe backbone it needs to make you wantto get up and dance. The oPeningsounds like something from the DavidLetterman show and it gets increasinglybetter.The classic iazz standard''Teness ee W alt z" f eaturesWallace,John Scofield on guitar andEddie Gomez on acoustic bass backedby John DeJohnette on drums."WillieMae" is very cool with Dr. John onpiano and Ray Anderson on trombone,to fill out this funky number JohnScofield blows your socks off onguitar." Trouble in Mind" is a slowblues tune reminiscent of a scene fromCasablanca, piano-bar, complete withslow-turning ceiling fan. Basically a tas-ty number with Dr. John on piano andScofield on guitar.

Is this 'hardcore-country' music? Is it'cow punk'? Call it what you will, Rock-n-Roll, Hardcore, Rockabilly, Country,it's all there. Country Bob offers a

cynical view of everything from ad-vocating U.S. involvement everywherein the world and nuclear war to prison

cover of Roger Millers' " Dang Me" anda host of originals. "Bowl full ofNoses" is a fun rockabilly account of a

day in the life of an average middle-of-the-road guy who goes around killingpeople and keeping their noses forsnacks. Mmm...good eatin'...greattune. "Silo Song" a Phil Ochs-PeteSeeger-esque folk ballad advocatingU.S. military involvement anywhere andeverywhere. It is about the joys of a

freshly emptied missle silo. The verycynical "Hell Box" is a fifteen to twentysecond song retelling "Pandora's Box"in the eyes of Edgar Allen Poe. "GoinTo Hell in a Hatbasket" is truehardcore-country. It tells the laments ofa remorseless yankee sociopath in a

Kentucky prison. Lots-of-Fun! ! !

In a nutshell this album is a gothicview of lile in 20th century America by a

band who couldn't decide betweenCountry,Folk, and good old loud Rock-N-Roll.

The best way to prepare yourself for afantastic show, is to listen to the two livetracks off the latest album. These in-clude "She's so Good" and "Think itOver". You can feel the energy these

fine young men put on in their concerts.

Concerts is not the correct word...onemay say music marathon. When theY

played at 288 Lark the crowd seemed topoop out before the band did. Dave,

Mike, and Lee kept the crowd going forover three hours. I passed out aroundthree o'clock in the morning...they were

still playing. After digesting that even-

ing, I went back for some more'Thenext two nights the Hoods performed a

frat beach party over at RPI. Even

though the crowd was too drunk to keep

up with the guys, they all had a goodtime, including the band. Just when wethought they might take a break to let us

breathe, they jumPed right into the

crowd with yet another Pure energysong. On top of doing their ownmaterial, all three crank out those oldfavorites from the 1970's like,"EverFallen in Love"by the Buzzcocks,

"Hello There" by CheaP Trick, and

other artists like Alice Cooper and Wire.Future plans for yet another album are

in the process right now. The month ofMay will bring the Hoods across thegreat plains on tour to California. If fastpaced New Yorkers can't keep up withthese supermen...Californians will get

quite a serious "Shake".
