Small, not-for-profit schools like WCCS enjoy many advantages: we know your sons well, we can keep classes sizes small and we can offer a carefully-focused academic curriculum. A humane, liberal education and strongly-improving senior school options flow from these. What we ever lack are the surpluses for large-scale capital projects. The interactive whiteboards, new lighting and upgrades to the refectory, playground, library and staff room of recent years have been possible only with vigorous fundraising efforts, and teamwork between staff, governors and parents. Our little platoon marches on its stomach. So this year we’re raising funds to refurbish the kitchen – last done in the early 1970s, when the school had just 50 boys. In 2016 WCCS has almost 180 boys, and serves over 1500 meals a week. The refurbishment required is extensive, and involves asbestos removal and the complex re-routing of the gas supply. We need £150,000 to do a proper job. Any contribution you can make is gratefully received. Thank you to our marvellous Parents’ Association, to my generous-hearted colleagues, especially Chef Beata and her team, and to everyone else who has contributed to, and made the effort to be at, the WCCS Gala 2016. THE EVOLUTION OF CARNIVAL

‘Carnival’ is a Catholic celebration of the beginning of Lent and originated in Italy about 400 years ago, after the Greek spring festival honouring Dionysus (the Roman Bacchus) God of Wine. Eating meat was prohibited during Lent, and the origin of the word ‘carnival’ comes from either ‘carne levare’ meaning ‘to remove meat’; or ‘carne vale’ or ‘farewell to meat’. Carnival quickly spread through Europe and Portugese settlers brought the celebrations to Brazil where by the 18th Century it had become a permanent fixture in Rio de Janeiro thanks to the additional African influences from the slaves who had settled there after The Abolition. Samba was introduced and the flamboyant mixture of music, song, dance and elaborate costumes all combined to create the world’s largest street party we know today.

CAIPIRINHAS

The Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail and was originally intended as a panacea for Spanish flu patients at the beginning of the 20th Century, with garlic as one of the key ingredients. It is still used today as a remedy for the common cold. Fortunately, tonight we are serving it in its more modern combination of cachaça (Brazilian sugarcane rum), sugar and lime.

TABLE NAMES

BRASILIA is the capital city of Brazil and was created by a number of urban planners, landscape designers and architects including Oscar Niemeyer in 1960 to capitalise on the country’s vast inland resources to bring the capital to a more central area of Brazil.

IPANEMA which means “stinky lake” in the Tupi language is an affluent district of Rio de Janeiro and was of course the inspiration for the Brazilian bossa nova jazz song “The Girl from Ipanema” which won a Grammy for the Record of the Year in 1965.

COPACABANA is a neighbourhood in Rio known for its world famous 4km beach which is home to an abundance of activity from the football-mad children of the favelas, through to the volley ball players, street vendors and the fishermen’s colony.

AMAZONAS is a state in Brazil and is named after the 4,000 mile long Amazon River. Much of the area is tropical rainforest and some of the cities can only be accessed via boat or plane. The river itself is the second longest in the world after the Nile, but it carries six times the volume of water than the next six largest rivers…combined!

Their Eminences Cardinal Vincent Nichols and Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor have graciously signed a photograph and autobiography respectively with a note written personally to the pupils of WCCS. Cardinal Nichols has been Archbishop of Westminster since 2009 when he succeeded Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor who had retired. “An English Spring: Memoirs” is Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor’s autobiography published last year which details his extraordinary life, including knowing eight Popes and singing war time songs with the Queen Mother.
