SYMBOLS FOREVER

A storm-beaten old watch-tower,

A blind hermit rings the hour.

Marbled moon and glaucous eyes

Ignore the pathless hills and skies.

Birds cease echoing each other

As day breaks night’s etcetera.

Creative potential is a very intriguing space: it holds the power of openness, the unknown, and the possibility for change. This is the potential we Irish artists explore with our artist friends in Estonia as we redefine, recreate, and re-invent ‘sharing’. It flows between us, celebrated in friendship, manifested through exhibitions, exchanges, residencies, workshops, 4 o’clock TEAS and meals together. Mostly though, it is exchanged through our sparkly eyed smiles for each other, our warmth towards each other, our admiration for each other and our very competitive nature when it comes to jam making. My Aunty Una’s raseberry jam is still my favouite but it’s a close tie with Sven Eric’s mother’s strawberry jam…This Calendar is a further celebration of this sweet connection, following in the light of the first calendar created by Vedelik/Liquid with Outrider artists and friends in 2013. This time, inspired by Michael Walsh’s proposal to make a W.B. Yeats / friendship calendar, we invited 24 artists to visually respond to a poem of their choice from the book “Luulet”* (1990) which has translations of selected W.B. Yeats poems. To our amazement, most of the Estonian artists involved were familiar with Yeats poetry, having their own copy of this little book. A very special thanks to all the artists who have helped make this creative collaboration. Nearly all of the artworks were especially created for this. Thanks also to the many who support creative potential across our cultures where “There are no strangers here; Only friends you have not yet met”.

Maria Kerin Outrider Artist curator

Every so often a thing of beauty is born. It may be a piece of art, it may be a friendship, it may be a transnational connection that surpasses boundaries – geographically and intellectually. It may be just a thing of beauty in its own right. This calendar is all of the above and much more. It is a joy to behold (and beauty is in the eye of the beholder), it contains dates that evoke memories, resonate with friends and families and it assists us in our busy lives, whilst inspiring us with provocative and inspirational images. The beauty of this calendar lies in its simplicity, a functioning calendar that is so much more. It is a testament to the artists who have created it, the local authorities that have supported it, the international supports and connections that underline it.We hope in these difficult times it will encourage us to pause and take stock of our busy lives, from time to time, raise a smile for memories and reminders, and help us to forge into the unknown future knowing that beauty remains in art, in friendships and across boundaries.

I will arise now and go for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds of the shore;

The Lake Isle of Inisfree by W.B. Yeats

Cavan is a county of lake water, every hollow holds a lake. County Clare our sister in this calendar is a place where the lakes have gone underground and over millennia sculpted a landscape unique and haunting. Estonia is a mystery to me apart from a fleeting visit where the people and the trees made the strongest impression. A calendar is a way in which we organise our lives. Artist Maria Kerin and designer Michael Walsh invited 24 Irish and Estonian artists to respond in friendship to the poetry of W.B. Yeats. Friendship is the way that this artistic coupling organises and inspires their co-collaborators in all the above mentioned places and many more besides. The generosity at the heart of this illuminates, where each month the artists suggest and entice us into the poetry and dare us to look again with fresh eyes. The result is a pleasure and the artistic interpretations that are held in these pages will inspire the observer month on month and throw new light on all the “said and unsaid” in the poetry of W.B. Yeats.

THE WHEEL

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Through winter-time we call on spring, And through the spring on summer call, And when abounding hedges ring Declare that winter’s best of all; And after that there’s nothing good Because the spring-time has not come – Nor know that what disturbs our blood Is but its longing for the tomb.

RATAS

Me talvel igatseme maid Ja mais, et suvi tuleks varem; Kui hekid täis on ritsikaid, Me õhkame, et talv on parem; Kuid saabudes see samavõrd – Sest pole kevadet - teeb viha. Ju me ei tea, et see, mis verd Meil kiusab, on vaid hauaiha.

A COAT

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

I made my song a coat Covered with embroideries Out of old mythologies From heel to throat; But the fools caught it, Wore it in the world’s eyes As though they’d wrought it. Song, let them take it, For there’s more enterprise In walking naked.

RÜÜD

Oma laulust ma kudusin rüüdi Ja ta üleni katsin Piltidega, mis müüdi Muistseist varamuist võtsin; Kuid lollpead tõid ta Kõigi silmade alla. Just kui ise lõid ta. Ah, jäägu neile mu rüüd, Sest väärikam olla On alasti nüüd.

SAILING TO BYZANTIUM

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

And therefore I have sailed the seas and come To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God’s holy fire As in the gold mosaic of a wall, Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre, And be the singing-masters of my soul.

THE LAKE ISLE OF INISFREE

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Dropping from the veils of morning to where the cricket sings; There Midnight’s all a glimmer and noon a purple glow, And evening full of Linnet’s wings.

I will arise now and go for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds of the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep Heart’s core.

WHEN YOU ARE OLD

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

Kord truult, kord reetlikult su rõõmu hetki Ja ilu armastati; üht meest võlus Ent sinu hing, mis üha rännuvalus, Ja sinu muutliku näo kurbusedki.

THE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.

RÄNDAVA AENGUSE LAUL

Nüüd olen kaua käind, kuid käin Veel läbi mitmed orud-mäed Ja ükskord suudlen tema suud Ja võtan kätte tema käed; Ja kuni saabub aege ots, Käin koltund rohtu kasvand teid, Kuu õunu nopin hõbeseid Ja päikse õunu kullaseid.

CRAZED GIRL

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

That crazed girl improvising her music. Her poetry, dancing upon the shore,

Her soul in division from itself Climbing, falling She knew not where, Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship, Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing Heroically lost, heroically found.

HE WISHES FOR THE CLOTHS OF HEAVEN

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

TA IGATSEB ENDALE TAEVAKANGAID

Ah, oleks mul taeva tikitud kangad, Kuhu kootud on kuldne ja hõbene valgus. Sinised, kalbed ja hämarad kangad, Kus päevane, öine ja koidikuvalgus, Ma laotaks need kangad su jalgade ette, Kuid kõik, mis mul vaesel on, on mu ulmad; Olen laotanud ulmad su jalgade ette; Käi tasa, sest see, millel käid, on mu ulmad.

THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.

TEINE TULEMINE

Tiireldes, tiireldes suurduvas ringis, Ei enam pistrik kuule peremeest, Ei hoia keskpaik asju koos, kõik lammub; Anarhia on vallal ilma peal. Tuhm verevoog on vallal ilma peal Ja uputab süütuse tseremoonia. Head kaotanud on meelekindluse, Kuid halvad on täis tegutsemisiha.

Once out of nature I shall never take My bodily form from any natural thing, But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make Of hammered gold and gold enamelling To keep a drowsy Emperor awake; Or set upon a golden bough to sing To lords and ladies of Byzantium Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

TWO SONGS OF A FOOL

I slept on my three-leged stool by the fire, The speckled cat slept on my knee; We never thought to enquire Where the brown hare might be, And whether the door were shut. Who knows how she drank the wind Stretched up on two legs from the mat, Before she had settled her mind To drum with her heel and to leap?

HULLU LAULUD
