As you enter the lobby, a view ofa winding staircase and many smaller showcases of local Wayne County items are on display. The option to take the elevator to the Genealogy and Local History department on the second floor-you will find the much needed space for the department holdings. New computers and the latest technology in a Copy Master which is a touch-less scanner. The software was developed in England, where the company had to rewrite the software for our local staff and it's needs. The latest computer/ scanners that are equipped to view your micro film on screen and can be sent to a file or e-mailed. The main meeting and class rooms are off the lobby (first floor) for easy access. Front sidewalks are dotted with engraved bricks showing dates of names or organizations to be seen as recorded footprints for remembrance. Many more outstanding features of this Main Library of Wayne County can be noted and it may take awhile to take it all in and all that it has to offer. Doors are now open. The long awaited Wayne County Public Library at 220 WestLiberty Street, Wooster, OH. has come true and a showcase tobehold.

As you enterthe lobby, aview ofawindingstaircase andmanysmallershowcases oflocal WayneCounty itemsare ondisplay. Theoption totake the elevator to the Genealogy and Local History departmenton the second floor-you will find the much needed space for thedepartment holdings. 18,1926 in Wooster son of Boyd and Julia(Rush) Cornelius and married Mary Hannahon June 9, 1963. She survives.He was a 1944 graduate of Wooster HighSchool, 1949 graduate of College ofWooster, 1974 graduate of University ofAkron Law School. For 15 years he was lawdirector for the city of Wooster, retiring in1990.He was a life member of Trinity Church ofChrist and a 3a year member of WoosterKiwanis Club. He was also a member ofWayne, Ashland, Ohio GenealogicalSociety, Wayne County Historical Society,AARP and PERl. He was a foundingmember of Wooster Camera Club.

Surviving in addition of his wife Mary, arechildren, Lisa (Scott) McKitrick ofColumbus, Keith (Mary) Cornelius, Becky(Rod) McMichael and Cheryl (Craig) Franksall of Wooster.

He is preceded in death by parents, sisters,Pauline Carter, Juanita Snyder, and brotherWade Cornelius.

Lloyd was a active member for many yearsbeing elected president of the society in

1991 soon after his retirement. In 1993 hebecame Editor of the "Ancestor" newsletterand held that position through the Springissue of2000. Over the years he strived foraccuracy in all his work and a passion forphotography. He often talked of his familiesof the McConkey and Rush of Clintontownship and early times around O'Dell .Lake. The Rush family lived in Mohicantownship which became part of Ashlandcounty.

Lloyd will be missed by all.

Shirley Lorson, Dedicated Volunteer

For many years,Shirley Lorson was avolunteer in manyaspects of ourgenealogy society,either helping withprojects, helping othersto begin their familygenealogy, or checkingout old newspaperarticles for thenewsletter. She alsohelped on the on theprogram committeeand participated in many of the activities duringher membership with us. She and husbandDenzil led our Wayne County Fair Committeeresponsibilities one year at which they hadpeoples greatly interested in their militaryscrapbook of local families. There are manycherished memories of her and we are sorry towrite another notice for this newsletter of twolost members within this one issue.

Shirley Lorson, 72, 68 Melody Lane, AppleCreek, OH., died Friday, June 22,2007, atWooster Community Hospital in Wooster, Ohio,following a long period of declining health.

Memorial services will be held Monday, June25, at 11 a.m. at Auble Funeral Home inOrrville, with Pastor Walter Jordan officiating.Burial at East Union Cemetery in Wooster.

Shirley was born on Feb. 8, 1935 in Doylestownto late Elno Arthur and Sarah (Crawford) Jonesand married Denzil W. Lorson on Feb. 19, 1952in Fort Wayne, IN.

Surviving are husband, Denzil, daughter Sherrie(Brian) Meier, Apple Creek, threegrandchildren, Sarah Meier, Apple Creek,Benjamin (Lynda) Meier of Creston, EmilyLorson of Dalton, five great-grandchildrenBrianna Stroud and Elana Bevington of AppleCreek, and David, Michael, and Daniel Kruger

of Creston; two brothers Bill (Dory) Jones,Doylestown and Dick (Judy) Jones ofWadsworth, two sisters Eleanor (Robert) Ripleyof Creston and Jean (Arthur) Holden ofDoylestown.

She was preceded in death by son, Michael W.Lorson in 1995 and brother Arthur Jones.

May the road rise up to meet you,May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,And rain fall soft upon your fields ...

And until we meet again,May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Quadrennial Census

The last issue we brought you the news ofthe new records that were given to oursociety that should help many of you that arelooking for ancestors in the county veryearly.The Quadrennial census was established bythe state in 1803 and these census was to betaken every fourth year thereafter. The Creston JournalCanaan Bend Home Coming.

After almost a week of dark clouds and rain,many fears were expressed that Saturday,September 18th might be a gloomy day for the1S\ Reunion of Canaan Bend school andcommunity. But to the great delight and clearsunshine making a perfect day. About 150persons were present. Nearly all having come adistance. At 12 o'clock noon a wonderful mealwas served under the maples. At 2 o'clock D. E.Bowers, Creston acting as president gave awelcome address and a reply was given byChas. Knapp, Lodi. Bert Ruse, West Salem,well known teacher of the school nearly 40 yearsago was called and gave a talk reviewing thepast. Merle Legget, Creston and Mrs C. E.Whonsetler accompanist on the piano,sang"The End of A Perfect Day". Mrs C. B.Whonsetler read a short history of an early date."Little is known of some of it early residentsexcepting inscriptions on old Moss coveredslabs in what is termed "God's Acre" that placewhich is now plainly by the Maples and study

Oak and was an acre from the comer of theBillman farm, Among its early settlers as far as1856; are the names of Smith, Whonsetler,McCracken, Burnette, Weimer, Deito,Whitmore, Hill, Weed, Richardson, Kerns,Thrapp, Benjamin, Gellispie, Reed, Rogers,Stuart, Bowman, Mathias, Zuvers, Fetzers,and others. The parents of Geo Fetzer whowere among our pioneers came direct fromAlsace Germany in 1831 and were 35 dayscrossing the ocean. Their resting place is theKupp graveyard. The Houck and MartinMathias families were also emigrants fromAlsace.

The first school house was very close to thecomer lot now occupied by the present buildingand was build on the foundation of the by goneM E church. It is said that scholars of earlierdate gathered in a school house on the comer ofa farm now owned by Howard Shaw before acrossroads school building was erected. In anearlier day, a Mr Slemons owned a large portionof the land on the eastern boundary. A MrDaley owned the farm that later was purchased

by Phillip Weimer. Sam Zuver occupied thehome on the other side of the road. On thenortheast comer of the crossing was ablacksmith shop and aU B church stood a littlefarther west on the farm now owned by HiramBowman. Of these only history can tell of theirexistence. Canaan Bend still holds a worthyrecord.Letters of regret were read, one being of Mrs.Sarah Ewing of Wheeling, W. Va., saying thatshe moved with her parents from Holmes Co. Towhat is known as the Geo. Weimer farm, at theage of 5 years and that Canaan Bend was herfirst school and her first teacher was EstherZuver of Canaan. She says an old M E Churchstood just west of that school building where shewent to S. S.. She is now 82 years of age.

A short business meeting was held and planswere made for the second reunion to be held thefollowing year at the same place.

Obituaries- Creston Journal

D. E. Bowers, son of Jacob and RachelBowers was born in Canaan Township, WayneCounty, Ohio August 9, 1868. United inmarriage to Mary A Haas, September 20, 1893.Three daughter were born, Eva C Haas ofDetroit, Mich., Esther M George ofLodi andAgnes C Pfouts of Wooster and one son GlenW. Of Creston. He died February 2, 1932 at theage of 64 years.

Samuel R. Bricker, 77, died at his home inOrrville, 302 Orr street. He is survived by hiswidow and following children; Mrs. Ira R.Brenner, Leesburg, Florida, Mrs FlorenceSchwary, Paul W. Bricker, Mrs Jewell LConrad and Richard H Bricker all of Orrville.

Sarah Ewing, daughter of Phillip andMagdaline Weimer was born in Holmes countyand moved to Wayne county in her earlychildhood. She was the youngest of fivechildren, Phillip, Geo., Mrs Edward Bixler,and Mrs Barbara Haas.In her 86th year her birthday being May 31 st.

1845, death occurred Feb. 15th (1935) at the

home of Ellis and Eunice Ewing of Wheeling,W.Va.She was the widow of Cyrus Ewing whommarried in 1866 Two children, Edgar and Ellis.

Seville Centenarian Passes

Mr Buel G. Foster was born at Moriah, EssexCo. N Y., Oct. 27, 1831; died Feb 13, 1932; age100 years, 3 months, and 17 days.Mr Foster did not remember the year that whichthey moved from Moriah via the Erie canal toBuffalo and Lake Erie to Erie, Pa., thence by oxcart to Sharon, Pa. But did remember movingwith the ox team and one horse in 1840 toMilton township, Wayne county, Ohio wherethey lived in a log cabin in the woods.After marriage to Sarah E. Welday in 1858,they lived in Amwell untill 1870, when theymoved to a farm in Medina county south ofSeville. During the time in Amwell, he was postmaster. Amwell was a route running to OldHickory (Jackson) to New Prospect postoffice atShinersburg, northeast of the present village ofRittman.In 1852 the Seville Academy was completed, MrFoster acted as j an itor of the schoo I during theschool year of 1852 and 53, ringing the samebell used in the present high school building inSeville. He lived still in Milton townshipwalking six miles every day in order to get to theacademy. In 1883 Mr Foster and family movedinto the village of Seville where he sinceresided.Five children were born into the Foster home,two sons and three daughters. One son and onedaughter preceded his death.
