On The Cover ... According to Greek Mythology, Asklepios was

the god of medicine because the ill were miraculously cured at the touch of his hand or staff or the tongue of his sacred serpent. Asklep ios had a daughter Hy­geia, who became known as the goddess of health. She carried a bowl in her hand, thought to contain a healing potion, and around her arm was entwined a serpent. Over time the bowl and serpent of Hygeia have become the symbols of pharmacy. The other symbol of pharmacy, ~, is a Latin abbreviation for the word "recipe," meaning "take thou."

At the end of this academic quarter, the Faculty of Pharmacy will complete the second phase of its move from Shapero Hall to the Health Sciences Building. In this move, most faculty members and the administration will be transferred to 1400 Chrysler Freeway leaving only three faculty members and two counselors at Shapero Hall. Hopefully they will join the others at the Health Sciences Building in 1979.

This move also completes much of the renovation that has been going on at the Health Sciences Build­ing during the past few years . During these construc­tion phases we not only remodeled laboratory and office space for faculty, we also renovated laboratories for teaching, created new faculty offices, built an office for the student government, constructed a new multimedia library, and created a student lounge. In the library we will house not only the most common­ly used journals and books for pharmacy and allied health, but will also keep our elaborate self-instruc­tional materials. Two rooms were created in the library with 26 carrels for self-instruction from slide­sound sequences to television and movies. We anti-

cipate heavy use of this facility, not only by students and faculty, but also by practicing professionals in an attempt to boost our continuing education offer­ings.

The overall beautification of the building and the construction of the student lounge was made possible by the generous financial support of the Pharmacy Alumni Association.

During the summer of this year we will attempt to renovate the two main lecture halls at the Health Sciences Building. These are the only two less appeal­ing teaching facilities left in the building. We hope to have them entirely remodeled by the time the students return in the fall. At that time we hope to no longer have any construction workers in the building and thus be able to enjoy the facilities uninterruptedly.

We hope to acquire suitable art objects, mainly paintings, in the future to make our surroundings even more pleasant and comfortable. For this particu­lar project we need some assistance from some generous donors.

CLINICAL PHARMACY WEEKEND

The Wayne State University chapter of the Student American Pharmaceutical Association- Michi­gan Pharmaceutical Association sponsored a "Clinical Pharmacy Weekend" this past winter. The program was held the weekend of January 15-16, 1977 and was open to students from WSU and other midwestern pharmacy schools. Left, Dean E. F. Mammen welcomes the students to the program. Jerome Paruszkiewicz, owner of Pharm­acy Today, discussed "Community Clini­cal Pharmacy with Economic Sccess."

The 23rd Annual Stephen Wilson Pharmacy Semi­nar, jointly sponsored by the Wayne State University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions and the Pharmacy Alumni Association, was held on Tuesday, February 22 , 1977. The seminar has been an annual continuing education program since 1954. The intent of the seminar is to focus on issues that are relevant to pharmacy and the other health care professions.

This year's program was "O.T.e. Drugs: A Third Classification of Drugs." The morning session in­cluded George Provost, B.S ., Editor, Journal of the American Phamzaceutical Association, who spoke about the history and the current status of a third classification of drugs. Norman A. Campbell, J.D., Ph. D. , Professor and Chairman of Pharmacy Adminis­tration, College of Pharmacy, University of Rhode Island, identified some of the legal imp li cations in­volved for the pharmacist with a third classification.

the O.T.e. Review Panel based in Washington, D.e. The first speaker was William E. Gilbertson, Pharm. D. , R.Ph., Assistant Director for Imp lementation, Division of O.T.e. Drug Evaluation, Bureau of Drugs. Dr. Gilbertson used a slide presentation to explain what the O.T .e. Review Panel is, what its objectives are, and how these objectives are accomplished. Two more speakers , Joseph L. Kanig, Ph. D., R.Ph. Scienti­fic Consultant, Proprietary Association ; and Robert Chalmers , Ph.D., R.Ph., Associate Dean, School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, Purdue Univers ity, spoke about their experiences serving on the Review Panel.

The program ended with a panel discussion, con­sisting of the day's speakers answering questions from the audience. Overall, the seminar was an informative experience, giving some insight to what may lie ahead for pharmacy and pharmacists if a third classification of drugs is established.
