We are quite fortunate at WB in

that we have a dedicated and

to go into full detail of everything

that our Youth have achieved. Our

people as ‘Career's of Everything’.

Sedge planting and re-vegetation of

Waylen Bay/Jeff Joseph Reserve—a

joint project by Joeys, Cubs, Scouts

and the Swan River Trust. Thanks

again to the City of Melville for

supplying the sedges and the

Environmental officer who gave our

Scouts a talk about food chains and

the importance of local flora.

We had the opportunity to volunteer

for Dolphin Watch Training. A joint

initiative between the Swan river

also had talks about Dolphin ID.

Re-vegetation of the escarpment

around the Scout Hall is an ongoing

initiative. As the Mayor pointed

out—looking at some of the tall

want to make sure the escarpment

stays where it is!

We received a Coles Junior Land-

A JOEY’s TALE

Our Joeys have come a long way

over the last few terms. A

number of them now have two

Group Camps under their belts—

the first one being held with

great success at Nanga Bush

Camp. Joeys came home

exhausted but it was clear that

the Venturers and Rovers had

left a very positive impression. It

was so pleasing to hear how well

the groups worked together in

such a constructive way.

The Joeys have spent time during

term 4 learning about BP and the

Joey Law and Promise. Paper

Mache pigs came to life over a

series of meetings. (No animals

were harmed in the production of

the pigs).

Geo-caching took place at our

favorite park—Wireless Hill. The

‘Duck43’ caches seem to be the

hardest ones in the district, but

we found them. It would have

been quite a sight for residents

of McCallum Ave seeing (and

hearing) the Joey MOB walking

up there from the Joey/Cub Hall.

A sleep over at the Scout Hall

saw the Joeys doing heaps of

activities and crafts, but also

hearing about Dolphin Watch and

having the opportunity to plant

sedges on the river banks.

More planting has been

undertaken in T1 in the form of

vegetables in our wonderful new

raised garden beds that were built by

the Rovers.

No one got broken during the trip to

Rolloways with the Cubs in the lead

up to Christmas—a very good thing

indeed!

The Joeys also had a sleepover at

Gloucester Park towards the end of

last year to celebrate 21 Years of

Joeys in WA. The theme was—circus.

Well, the first time we’ve seen the

Leaders out of uniform and what

where they wearing? Metallic wigs,

giant clown outfits, a pink tutu and

jungle pants. What a sight. Our

Leaders are the biggest clowns

indeed. Strange there has not been

any photographic evidence come

forward of their outfits?

A campfire was held on The

Esplanade Fremantle with the other

Joeys in Coastal Plains District, the

Applecross RSL ANZAC parade 2013

was observed. This is just the tip of

the iceberg of Joey events and

experiences. Some non-Scouting

parents express surprise that Joeys

go on camp. Especially all the way to

Nanga and Rottnest. Strict adult /

Joey ratios are observed 4:1, parent

helpers with WCC cards assist where

needed. These experiences are just

so valuable an opportunity for young

members to grow and have a real

chance at developing independence—

and a world of fun. Leaders have

reported how quickly the Joeys have

learnt the drill and what is expected.

Well done to our Joey Leaders.

1ST Waylen Bay Sea Scouts

The recent GC2013—Rotto (for the newbies—that’s code for Group Camp) was subsidized by the Committee to the tune of $85 per

head. As GC each year is the main Group activity, and a very valuable one in which each section gets to spend time together, we want to

encourage the attendance of as many as possible. This is a considerable sum, however the Committee are steadfast to support this

main event. Our Treasurer may have had a mild turn in approving the funds (thrifty is a virtue we are known for). When it came to a

committee vote on the level of subsidy, a collective breathe was taken while the Human Calculator worked through the numbers.

Thanks Carol. You do great work to make our finances compliant, we appreciate the time you make for WBSS.

Per tradition, Cubs marched at the

Applecross RSL ANZAC 2013

service. Applecross RSL hold their

own service the last Sunday before

ANZAC Day, to allow their older

members to stay closer to home,

and people interested in being in/

seeing the big parade on the day

can head into the Perth or

Fremantle marches. The

Applecross parade seems to be

growing in numbers with many

more wreathes being laid this

year.

In term 4 last year the Cubs

headed to Wireless Hill for a

massive Wide game, in the dark

involving Fire Breathing dragons,

rescue the eggs and - well—a

rather complicated theme non the

less. The Rovers were recruited to

assist and the Leaders spent quite

a bit of time preparing for that

one. We never did get to find out

why Kaa (Mick Slivkoff) was seen

leaving for Wireless Hill with an

axe in his hand. We believe all

Cubs came back unharmed.

The fame of Cubs at Waylen Bay

is gaining to the point —that

we’ve started a second Cub

Pack. Initially they will operate

as one pack but spread the

Cubs across the Cub and Guide

Halls at BP Reserve. Eventually

we plan to form up two distinct

Packs once Leaders in Training

get a bit more experience.

The Leaders have come to the

conclusion that 24 Cubs to a

Pack is the optimal number in

one Cub Hall—without having to

wear ear plugs.

Our Sixers and Seconds headed

off for Leadership training camp

at Pelican Point during term 1 .

Group Camp at Rottnest was a

BIG highlight, with many of the

Cubs clocking up some serious

time on their bikes. They did

take some time off the deadly

treadlys to hunt out a few geo-

caches, visit the Oliver Hill

Battery , snorkeling adventures

and of course—quokka spotting.

It was a crowded trip home on

the ferry but— it was a quiet one.

Starting up the worm farm and

helping with the groups veggie

patch was a job to do. With

some luck there may be some

cooking projects coming up

using our very own fresh

produce.

Scouts are what it’s all about!

The Scouts have been busy

with a raft of activities recently.

Australian Scouting Medallions

are raining down on the troop,

is there any room left on the

honour boards?

Things seem to start to get a

bit more involved at Scouts, we

think unless you are directly

involved, it may seem all very

confusing. There are Explorer

and Adventure level activities,

our Scouts managed four bike

rides of these two different

levels ranging from 15km’s

and one night out to 30 km’s

and two nights out.

The Scouts have visited the

FESA headquarters to check

out what goes on there.

Jamboree of the Air and

Internet JOTA./JOTI is where

Scouts can contact other

Scouts from around the world.

There is a set date in the world

wide Scouting movement for

this to happen, so there’s

plenty of Scouts to share

stories and learn about the way

other people live and what they

do. A number of older Scouts

achieved their amateur radio

licenses, which is no mean feat

given some adults do struggle

with this.

Many older Scouts achieved their

RST’s—recreational skippers

tickets. A great achievement,

just think that the day you got

your RST’s, other kids were on

‘Faceplant’, ‘ Twiggle’ and Z-

Boxes. Well done to you for doing

something INTERESTING and

FUN.

The regular Friday night meetings

continued on as usual throughout

our adventures. Scouts

introduced their friends to pets,

including an actual RAT called

Suzie. Eohhhh. Some performed

their musical instruments—cello,

guitar, piano and oboe. How’d

you get a piano to the hall?!!

Other’s gave presentations on

the rules of soccer, and even a

briefing on how to grow olives.

Orion (Laurie Cranston) has been

with the group for a couple of

years now as the main Scout

Leader. He is passing the baton

onto Arrow (Kate Jenkin). Thank

you for your time, enthusiasm

and leadership Orion. We’re sure

to see you around. Arrow,

congratulations on your new role,

we’re sure you’ll be dreaming up

a heap of new adventures to

challenge our WBSS Scouts.

be involved—without a WWC you will NOT be eligible to participate unless your card is valid. You run the risk of being

Liam was chosen from Vent’s across

Vent’s from around the world attended.

In a nutshell, a home stay with a Sri

Sections of the Cape to Cape walk were

undertaken, camping overnight. ANZAC

Day 2013 Perth was observed and our

Vent’s helped the large crowds by provid-

ing information and handing out water.

Several Vent’s achieved their Venturer

Unit Management and Queen Scout

Leadership Tapes after completing two

day courses.

Out of all of the Venturers in WA, just 6

Vent’s were selected and offered a

‘Mawson Scholarship in Leadership

2012’. This involved a full Scholarship

to attend a 5 day camp in Canberra to

receive instruction in teamwork, behav-

ior management, effective program-

ming, public speaking, decision making

and more. Of the six, two were from

WBSS—Matt Brown and Liam Furchow.

In addition to the Leadership instruction,

Vent’s had the opportunity to complete

the high ropes course — over water - at

the ADF training facility. They meet

Andrew Lock, Australia’s most accom-

plished mountaineer, who gave a

motivational speech. Then cap it all off

with a reception at the Botswana High

Commission. There isn’t enough room to

go into full details of this amazing trip! In

an open letter from Aaron Wardle

The ROVER’S RAMBLES

Recent times have been busy for

our Rover Crew. They are quite a

new crew, only being in operation

for three years, however they have

recently been awarded by the

West Australian Rover Council

(WARC) the ‘Quality Rover Award’

which is awarded to all Crews that

have a successful and rounded

program. Well, this seems nothing

really given they were voted

by the WARC. Congratulations

WBSS Rovers!

At the recent GC2013 at Rotto, the

Rovers had a bit of fun bike riding,

swimming, exploring etc. Usual

Rotto stuff. We would like to make

a special thanks to our Rover’s

who helped the Joey Leaders with

‘Joey-Watch’ during their

swimming activities. No Joeys

floated off to South Africa and the

sharks were not fed that day . The

Leaders and parents are most

appreciative. One Rover does need

special mention for his help at that

camp. Redback (Richard Pilgrim)Redback (Richard Pilgrim)Redback (Richard Pilgrim)Redback (Richard Pilgrim)

a man known for ease of

conversation and charisma,

entertained the Joeys with his

cracking sense of humour. Yes,

the jokes about quokka POO! went

down so well, they were re told

many times in school yards

afterwards. We’ll write that again

’cos it’s really funny to say -

‘quokka POO!’.

Heading towards the end of

sent out a challenge to our

Leaders. Can you handle ‘DHPDHPDHPDHP----

natural habitat of tents, cub hall,

river beds and bush tracks? Rising

to the challenge our Leaders said—

- who would look after the

(With no electronic equipment or

started well with Orion leading the

Luckily there wasn’t a pool at the

training facility, otherwise Pax

would have dismantled the

washing line, lashed together

some fencing and tried to float a

few people—’cos it’s water and she

can! Possum did a neat job of

making sure Leaders who were

scared of leaving their tree’s and

there was a certain Cub Leader

who kept knicking off to the back

Congratulations to our Pax (Barb

Kozzies boss now. Pax continues

to have a role in our Water Activi-

wider responsibilities. Thanks

Pax, we appreciate your work.

Thank you to the parents helpers that pitch in to assist as parent helpers for big, messy or rather adventurous events. The Leaders have

asked to mention, in particular, the help over summer with assistance with Master Mariners and Swantiki. We know of people, now

adults and parents themselves, that attended these events as Youth. They always report really special recollections of their experience.

For these big events, to have extra’s pitching in means the Leaders can provide a really high quality event, knowing that catering, radio

work, first aid is covered. We have a strong program at WB, and it all comes down to Group support. Thank you Parents.

THE TREETHE TREETHE TREETHE TREE

I planted here today - a strong young tree.

Rich soil it has, and sun, and space to grow:

And who I wonder, in the years to be will

seeks it’s boughs soft shade; for well I know,

long here this slender plant grows full and

round. He who now tends it shall be sleeping

sound.

What manner of a man will sit to view this

now familiar scene when these shades

spread? Will he be thankful that he never

knew these days of strange

uncomprehended dread? Or will he, gazing

back, find cause to sigh. For olden peace, for

happier days gone by?

I planted here today, a strong young hope.

That, when this tree’s green banners are

unfurled, there shall come singing down this

verdant slope. Some wiser moral of a wiser

world. And, if he bless the man who set the

tree, and be content, so mayhap, shall I be.

can possibly be squeezed into one

and have a word to your child’s Leader. If

the Leaders are freed up—to Lead—we

can cover more activities in a smooth

fashion and keep prices down by not

having to employ facilitators. A one day

(adults only ) course needs to be under-

taken at Manjedal to get your ‘ticket’.

Think of the Brownie point’s you will earn

The annual fee’s paid by members each year are split into two sections. $157 from each member goes directly to ‘Branch’ to cover the cost

of insurances, administration, publicity for Scouts WA. The balance of the fee’s go towards operating costs of the halls and a large portion is

spent on Leaders training. A lot of the capital purchases - camping equipment, vessel repairs etc are actually funded through grants, fund-

1ST Waylen Bay Sea Scouts

One of my most enjoyed moments is to stand on the balcony of the Scout Hall and look in enjoyment at the wonderful view it beholds. Looking in a panorama from Perth CBD following the River from Kings Park, Crawley, Nedlands and way into the distance towards Claremont. The beauty of Swan River and Waylen Bay itself is captured like a painted landscape.

As a Sea Scout group, we are very fortunate to have such excellent facilities and have such a quiet sheltered bay learning how to sail. Waylen Bay was formed about 47 years ago because Deep Water Point Group was filled and there were no opportunities to expand. Some enterprising persons got together and formed the new Group and for the first 6 years, while the hall was being built, the Group met at the RSL Hall in Kintail Road. Their most successful fundraising enterprise was to conduct rose pruning throughout Applecross.

One such parent, Trevor Leaver, helped design and build the hall and arranged for the Bay to be dredged to create a bay for sailing. Trevor was able to get our first sailing dinghy, named after him, and the boat was and is the fastest boat on the River for well over 40 years. It seems that Trevor had a vision of what was needed to build a successful Sea Scout group.

Today, 40 years on, Waylen Bay Group has a vision. It may be time for the vision to be revisited but it remains on track to where the Group is going. The Group is forming its second cub pack, is buying 2 new Pacers (Lottery West Grant) to replace the aging surfcats and is looking to create

a sailing program for Cubs.

Waylen Bay is working with the City of Melville to replace the Cub & Guide Hall and the Venturer & Rover Dens on Baden Powell Reserve and build a new facility near Wireless Hill.

The vision for Waylen Bay continues to provide the best program for each section to challenge our youth and make activities fun. We are continuously up-skilling our leaders and parent helpers and we are growing laterally by program as well as increasing our numbers. Waylen Bay has the only trained Group Activity Leader Akers (Neil Akerstrom – Water Activity Leader) in Western Australia and complements the work of Flint (Debbie Wardle -Environment), Pax (Barbara De La Hunty—Water Activities) and soon to be Bagheera (Grant Loveday - Pioneering).

Waylen Bay has a vision to become a very good scout group across all sections and activities and we are working towards that goal. We are not there yet, but we are still trying.

I encourage all parents to get involved in the Group. There are very few years that you can be involved in your son or daughter’s life and be transparent to them as a leader or parent helper. It is a great reward to be involved.
