Sunday. Once again it was a fantastic day out, I was doing leg 6 this year which meant I was able to get round all the handover points and it was great

to see quite a lot of the action unfold, as always there will be tales of

outstanding runs, near misses, and of course unfortunate errors that will no doubt provide us with much banter over the next few days. I am very proud

of all our runners achievements, you all displayed team spirit and sportsmanship throughout, it was good to see you helping each other. Also

it was good to pick up a couple of awards for fastest runners on 2 of the legs. These were Leg 2 where Karen Pickles and David Coleman won the fasted

mixed pairing and on Leg 6 where Gary Bailey and Darren Burnley proved to be the fastest pairing.

Well done to all our members who took part both runners and supporters”.

17/8/13

This last week we had a number of Pacers doing quite a mix of races.

On Wednesday 7th we saw the all important seventh Veterans race take place at

Knavesmire, York. A flat, multi-terrain course and just under 6 miles saw another good turnout from the Pacers. The Pudsey men increased their title hopes by

maintaining a lead of 103 points over Holmfirth with only one race to go at Spenborough on Sunday 10th November. In the all to count and rest to count the

Pacers men are in first place and another good performance at Spenborough should see them finish top.

5/9/13 With the August holidays there are a number of races to catch up on.

However, the main club event at the weekend was the Leeds Country Way Relay

where 4 teams of 12 Pacers took part in running the approximate 64 miles over fields, on tracks, across parks and on roads around the greenbelt and countryside of

Leeds. The Pacers A team finished in 4th place in a total time of 7:19:50, a great result. The Vets team finished in 16th (8:26:30), the B team 30th (9:39:25) and

appearance for the Steads, father and daughter Don and Melissa finishing in 1:41 and 1:47 respectively. Well done to Don, who won first V70.

Tony reports “This was a new event on the calendar and a new route (it did not use any of the Yorkshire Vets route) which started at the Village Hall. Unusually this

event was held on a Saturday and unfortunately the weather took a turn for the

worse with heavy rain which started Friday evening was still there Saturday morning as I drove across.

Undeterred I turned up along with 60 other hardy souls (nutters?) armed with my

recently purchased Salomon trail shoes (essential considering the conditions) ready for an almost guaranteed difficult run. As its Honley, it’s an uphill start all the way to

a woodland section which did give a little shelter from the lashing rain but did have the disadvantage of producing muddy trails through the trees.

As the saying goes “what goes up, must come down” so the final part of the course

was a downhill section across the fields and back to the shelter of the Village Hall in Honley, where a cup of hot filter coffee was most welcome.”

Travelling over the Pennines to the Blackpool half marathon on 1st

September Mick Hern completed the course in 1:30:49 and Catherine

Smithurst in 2:07:11.

A few new PB’s at the 5km park runs in the last few weeks include Al Chapman, 18:23 at Hyde Park on 17th August and Nicky Anness 26:23 at Bradford on August

Fisher 7:44.9.

16/9/13 This week The Great North Run attracted 11 Pacers out to challange Mo Farah.

Run Britain and Power of 10 - how it can help you - Jim Wheldon As a progression within the 'Clubmark' scheme, the Pudsey Pacers Club, it's coaches

and athletes, ideally need to demonstrate an understanding of the 'Run Britain' and

'Power of 10' initiatives as promoted by UK Athletics.

What is Run Britain?

Run Britain is the road running part of UK Athletics, with the stated aim of 'making British Road Running the best in the world in terms of organisation, development and

performance.

Laudable aims, but what is in it for the individual, and, by extension, the Club? Run Britain can be used as a 'one stop shop':

- View training tips and related articles. - Identify potential road races through the extensive race calendar.

- Enter races. - Comprehensive results service.

- General Athletics news.

- Blogs. - Overall and age/gender specific national rankings.

- Monthly competition using handicap system that rewards those racing more and competing over different distances.

And 'Power of 10'? Another mission statement, this from British Athletics:

'The sport of Athletics has a mission to strengthen the depth for every event, in every

age group, across every nation and region of the United Kingdom. The 'Power of 10' illustrates the challenge, and is in place to motivate competitors, coaches and Clubs'.

Recognition is afforded to Clubs/coaches/athletes by way of an awards scheme for

those meeting the 'UK 100' and 'UK10' standards for track and field events.

To take the 5k as an example, runners need to achieve the following times:

UK 100 M: 14:33 F: 17:45 UK 10 M: 13:35 F: 15:36

Page 12: Way Relay · - Presentation Night - LCW Teams News Reports YVAA Run Britain/Power of 10 New Meeting Points Big Eric says WYWL Sociable Pacers Dates for your Diary . 2 Sunday. Once

12

If those times seem unrealistic at our Club's current stage of development, then Power of 10 offers much more of interest to the local non-track runner:

- A comprehensive race results service

- Age grading - National rankings by distance.

The individual needs to achieve a 'baseline standard' for inclusion of a result to be

logged against his or her personal record. Again to use the 5k as an example; Open age, Men 16:45, Women 20.00, with an increasing time allowance under the age

grading system. Further allowance is made taking into account the degree of severity of any given race - eg a 72 minute Guy Fawkes 10 might equate to a 70 minute

Askern 10 for purposes of grading, and inclusion in the individual's results.

In practice, various random results show up against the individual's record on Power of 10, from WYWL X/C, to Parkruns, fell races and Yorkshire Vets, as more and more

races are 'captured' by the system. There is also a facility to submit 'missing' performances. Simply enter your name on the 'Athletes' tab and check out your year

on year performances (or those of your rivals !)

Incidentally, the World Masters Running Association describes the level achieved at

given percentages as follows:

100% = World record 90% = World class

80% = National class 70% = Regional class

Pudsey Pacers must be doing something right as current PP runners have racked up

some 150 runs at a grading in excess of 80%.

Conclusion: For added motivation, inspiration, and general interest, take a look at these sites:

www.runbritain.com

www.thepowerof10.info nb: there is a link from 'Power of 10' to 'Run Britain'.

The Flea Song by Big Eric

Through three cheese trees Three free fleas flew

While these fleas flew

Freezy breeze blew

Freezy breeze made

These three trees freeze

Freezy frees made These trees cheese freeze

Thats what made these

Three free fleas sneeze

West Yorkshire Winter League Cross Country

The League is accepted as a league that caters for runners of ALL abilities.

Each race is usually different in the terrain that it offers, although all are approx. 4 - 5 ½ miles

in length and offer a mixture of woodland, canal, tracks, streams, usually in fairly muddy

conditions. There are usually between 100-200 runners at each event. Cross Country studs

are recommended and club vests should be worn.

There are individual men's and women's trophies and prizes to compete for at senior and

several veteran levels. However to count for these you must complete in at least four out of the

five events, and your best four scores will be added together. At the end of each race

individuals are given a tag which denotes their position in the race. This works as follows:

The first male runner gets 200 points, second gets 199, third gets 198 and so on. The first

female runner gets 100 points, second gets 99, third gets 98 and so on.

So in addition to the team positions, individual results are available after each event and

individual and category winners are presented with individual trophies at the Presentation

Evening held at the end of the season.

Two very special trophies are also presented to individuals each year, these are for the most

improved male and female runner who has completed all 5 events. The most improved male

runner receives the Dave Turpin Memorial Trophy and the most improved female runner

receives the Paul Dowson Memorial Trophy. Through these trophies we remember two well

known league competitors who both died suddenly during the 1999 -2000 season.

All the results and information about the League are placed on the official WYWL Website after

each event.
