WAY OF THE CROSS LEADER’S NOTES

Introduction

The Way of the Cross calls us to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made in giving his life for all to be saved. As we move closer to the celebration of Jesus as the Risen Lord providing us with the promise of eternal life, let us remember that Jesus teaches us how we must live to achieve the peace and harmony that resurrection offers. Caritas Australia has produced a PowerPoint presentation to support the Way of the Cross. This can be moved from station to station or it can simply be running in the background while people move through the stations. 01 Introduction to the Way of the Cross 02 Preparation, Prayer and reflection 03 Station 1. Preparation

In preparation for this celebration create a large cross made of natural branches and have a basket of paper leaves of different colours. At each station the participants collect a leaf on which is printed the lesson to be learned from that station and how we must live to achieve peace and harmony. After the last station the leaves are hung on the tree to remind us of the new life we can achieve if we live by the promise of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Find the leaves for printing from page 18.

Reflection

We remember you, Lord, as we join with you on this journey. The mystery of your suffering, death and resurrection are at the centre of the Good News that we proclaim to the world.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1067)

The call is to live as you taught. Guide us to: learn about our brothers and sisters who experience hardship; act with love and unity to help them rise above their difficulties; and pray for people of the world to recognise God’s presence in everyone.

1. Jesus is condemned to death As soon as it was morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate. And they all condemned him and said, “He deserves to die.” When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and then he handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.

Reflection

Jesus is condemned to death by the people who once listened to his teaching.

We know that over 800 million people live on less than $1.25 a day and that thousands die each day as a result of poverty.

Human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the foundation of society.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, para.1700)

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

Response:

O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Pope Francis, Praise be to You (Laudato Si’), 2015

WAY OF THE CROSS LEADER’S NOTES

We learn that people who are poor lack the necessities of life and often cannot survive without the help of others. Our action is to raise awareness of the struggles people have when living in poor conditions.

2. Jesus takes up his cross

Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

Reflection:

The heavy weight of the cross bears down upon Jesus.

Many millions of people carry the burden of not being able to provide for their families.

This world is God’s gift to everyone, and we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole.

Pope Benedict XVI, Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate), 2009

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

3. Jesus falls for the first time Surrounded by a jeering crowd, Jesus sets out on the way to Calvary. He bears upon his shoulders the heavy cross. His strength fails, and he falls to the ground. There is no one to help him, no one to show compassion. Instead, he hears only mockery and insults.

Reflection

Jesus falls and no one comes to his aid.

Everywhere there are people who fall under the pressure and burdens that each day brings.

The Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching place our service of the poor and vulnerable and our work for justice at the center of Christian witness.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, A Place at the Table, 2002.

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

4. Jesus meets his mother

Mary hurries to the street to see Jesus already being led to His execution. She makes her way through the crowds, and comes upon a tragic sight: Jesus, her beloved Son, is carrying a heavy cross. Stricken with grief, she cannot utter even a single word.

Reflection

Mary is overcome at the sight of her precious son being treated so cruelly.

Mothers all over the world weep in anguish when they see their children suffer.

When a family is weakened, it is inevitably the children who suffer. The dignity of women and mothers needs to be protected because it is the children who are affected most.

Pope Benedict XVI, Fighting Poverty to Build Peace, 2009

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

5. Simon of Cyrene Carries the Cross Jesus is severely weakened by his ordeal. They fear he may die along the way. So they force Simon of Cyrene, a by-stander, to help carry the cross.

Reflection

A reluctant stranger comes to Jesus aid. They can see that Jesus will not make it by himself.

When people need help we must come together with a common conviction that we can no longer tolerate the difficulties experienced by those who are suffering.

Our faith teaches us that people are not issues or problems but sisters and brothers in one human family.

6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

Seeing Jesus, his face bleeding and disfigured, a woman named Veronica is moved to pity. Forcing her way through the crowd, she wipes his face with her veil.

Reflection

Jesus is comforted by a nurturing, caring person who steps forward and gently attends to him.

Regardless of our differences we need to be open to the needs of others and act to attend to those needs.

Answering the call to love our neighbours will promote a culture of respect and lead to peace in our communities around the world.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1877

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

7. Jesus falls again

Jesus again falls under the weight of the cross. Jesus bears the suffering of all people.

Reflection

Jesus falls with the weight of the huge cross. This cross symbolises all people who are poor and suffering.

Poverty in the world today is not just about having no money. The hardship of life and poverty of spirit should also be a concern.

The human person needs to live in society. Through exchange with others, mutual service and dialogue, all people develop their potential.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1879

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem

There followed after Jesus a great multitude of the people, and among them were women who bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.”

Reflection

The women, focused on the suffering of Jesus, were reminded by him that they should open their eyes to what is happening in their world.

Jesus challenges us to see what is happening in this world and carry out his teaching of ‘Love One Another’.

The New Law is a law of love, a law of grace, a law of freedom. It makes us act out of love infused by the Holy Spirit.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1985, 1972

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

9. Jesus falls the third time

Jesus again falls under the weight of the cross. Jesus was so weak and tired, he could hardly stand yet he struggled to his feet to fulfil his mission.

Reflection

Jesus understands how hard life can be sometimes. He gets to his feet and continues even though the weight of the cross and the journey uphill is almost too much to bear. Jesus gives us the example of faith, faith in God, faith in ourselves and faith in others.

We are invited to receive God’s love and to love God in return with the gift of love that brings forth the response to desire, seek and protect the good of others. Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), 2013

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

Help us to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers and never to abandon them.

10. Jesus is stripped of his garments

When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And they divided his garments among them by casting lots. This was to fulfill the scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them; they cast lots for my clothing.”

Reflection

Jesus is stripped of dignity and freedom of movement. He sits alone, vulnerable and defenceless. There is nothing to help him. We are reminded that people are often left alone, vulnerable and defenceless thinking all is lost.

There is a need to abandon the mentality that the poor are a burden. The poor ask for the right to share in enjoying life and to make good use of their capacity to work, thus creating a world that is more just and prosperous for all.

Pope John Paul II, On the Hundredth Anniversary of Rerum Novarum (Centesimus Annus), 1991

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

11. Jesus is nailed to the cross

When they came to the place which is called the Skull, there they crucified him; and with him they crucified two criminals, one on the right, the other on the left, and Jesus between them. And the scripture was fulfilled which says, “He was numbered with the transgressors.”

Reflection

Jesus is nailed to the cross and placed alongside two criminals. Throughout his public life Jesus welcomed the poor, the sick and the sinners. He offered them the love, friendship and forgiveness of God. Faithful to Christ’s example, the Christian community will never fail to assure the entire human family of support and love.

Pope Benedict XVI, Fighting Poverty to Build Peace, 2009

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

12. Jesus dies on the cross

Jesus on the cross said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” And then, crying with a loud voice, he said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” And he bowed his head, and handed over his spirit.

Reflection

Even in the last moments of his life Jesus was thinking of others. He gave the gift of his mother to others and then gave himself to God.

Our challenge is to always think of others and to place our trust in God even when faced with difficulties, pain and suffering.

Jesus left his mother. Only after doing this did Jesus know that all was finished. He brought us to her as a sign of hope. She walks at our side and shares our struggles constantly surrounding us with God’s love. Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), 2013

Prayer

We ask you, Lord, for strength and guidance to become people of witness. To teach others that the way you love us is the way we should love one another.

13. Jesus is taken down from the cross When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” There were also many women there, looking on from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.

Reflection

The witnesses at the foot of the cross kept watch over Jesus. Some were frinds and others strangers. Together they proclaimed that Jesus was truly the Son of God.

Jesus taught us that we are all sons and daughters of God and the gifts he gave us through his death are faith and hope. Hope that someone will renew our spirit when times get tough and faith in God’s promise of eternal life.

Both charity and justice are required by our faith. We have unique opportunities to use our voices to shape a more caring community, justice for all and a more peaceful world.

14. Jesus is laid in the tomb When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it [in] clean linen and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed.

Reflection

All people require someone who will care for them and provide for their needs. Joseph takes Jesus’ body and tends it, ensuring that in death Jesus is treated with dignity and love.

The word of God invites us to recognise that we are a people, God’s people. We need to develop a spiritual taste for being close to people’s lives and discover that life is a source of great joy. When we stand before Jesus crucified we see the depth of his love for all.

End Reflection During Lent we have listened to and learned much about the work of Caritas Australia.

Firstly, Doney’s story tells us of how, through being provided with training in new farming techniques and the provision of clean water, the people in her community are producing more plentiful crops and dramatically improving their health.

Secondly, we heard about Hum Noy who has Down’s Syndrome.Through attending school, joining with others and learning new things he has prospered and developed strong communication skills. His mother has also benefitted through training to become a teacher.

As Pope Francis said ‘Education is an act of hope’.

Thirdly, Dominic’s story told us about the challenges his village faced due to poverty. Through regular community discussions and empowering people to voice their concerns, people have achieved greater peace and increased respect as well as a reduction in violence and alcohol abuse.

Fourthly we learned about Evangeline who faced the challenge of finding work and staying positive in the face of unemployment. Through the Djilpin Arts and Cutural centre she has been able to work with elders and young people so that new generations can learn the traditional skills of her Aboriginal culture.

We are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus to live the good life as from the beginning he meant us to live it. (Ephesians 2:10)

In the Fifth week of Lent we heard of Sreymom whose community has suffered without adequate health care, After working as a health care worker, Sreymom was able to train as a midwife so that she could assist women in their pregnancies and teach people about broader health issues.

And finally we learned about Dhaniram who’s tribe has suffered poverty, discrimination and marginalisation. Through the ‘Our Rights Project’, Dhaniram has learned about Human Rights, local governance and leadership bringing this information to his tribe and empowering them to seek change.

‘Never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity!’ Pope Francis.

Through these works Caritas Australia inspired by the teachings of Jesus, has enabled people to learn more and create change for their communities.
